The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that affect guest services in the restaurant industry of South Mississippi as examined from the line level employee. This satisfaction can include things in the servicescape (e.g. noise level, parking availability) as well as the service support that a waiter receives from their coworkers and supervisors. By combining a research model that examines the guest server exchange with a typical guest satisfaction questionnaire, the researcher developed a two part internet survey to be administered to both restaurant patrons as well as line level employees working in the restaurant industry. This study examines the factors influencing subsidiary top manager’s compliance with their head office’s instructions. Our grounded theory qualitative study is based on twenty four (24) interviews with subsidiary top managers from various industries. Shared meaning and the lack of shared meaning explained incidences of compliance and non- compliance respectively. Surprisingly the lack of shared meaning in many instances resulted in better business outcomes for the subsidiary. Shared meaning resulted when there was meaningful consultation, a positive personal relationship and trust between subsidiary top managers and head office personnel. Research on Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has mostly focused on the underlying entrepreneurial behavior of the owner but ignores related organization-wide business culture attributes that may account for the firm's success. In fact, numerous SMEs will survive without explicit entrepreneurial orientation. To understand this phenomenon we interviewed 29 owners and senior leaders of SMEs and examined the interrelatedness of the firm's cultural traits to business performance. We found that while many SMEs manifest entrepreneurial style of leadership, it is often other cultural traits such as employee empowerment, playfulness, and situated learning that contribute to innovation and firm performance. Project post-mortems have been identified as a key strategy for organizations to learn from their past failures and improve system development project performance. Although several guidelines for conducting post-mortems have been proposed those conducted result often in little novel insight and understanding. This study seeks to understand how the information captured and used as part of project post-mortems is or is not leveraged to facilitate organizational learning and what factors thwart such efforts. This study examines how individual experiences influence career success. In contrast with previous researchers' definitions of career success, this research is intended to focus on a broader range of subjective career success criteria by focusing on individual experiences and the fact that career success means whatever the individual under consideration defines it as. A rigorous qualitative study based on surveys and interviews with 38 individuals including underrepresented minorities was used to explore their definition of career success, their education, transition into the workforce, diversity, workforce experience, and what fostered or hindered their career success. This study analyzes the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, examining the brand’s overall implementation of the campaign, as well as its successes and failures. More than ten years after the launch of Dove’s first campaign, the advertising world has greatly evolved. In an ever-changing media world, Dove took the first step towards an attempt at an all-inclusive advertising campaign. This study examines the degree to which Dove’s innovative campaign set the bar for future advertisements. It demonstrates the importance of corporate social responsibility, brand management, inclusivity and the two-way symmetrical communication model.

Do Commitment Based Human Resource Practices Influence Job Embeddedness And Intention To Quit?, Debjani Ghosh, L. Gurunathan

This empirical paper provides evidence that commitment based human resource practices (CBHRP) influence employees' turnover intentions by embedding newcomers more extensively into organisations. The study was conducted with 501 managers in 19 financial service organisations in India. Results reveal that CBHRP enable organisations to actively embed employees. The results also indicate that on-the-job embeddedness (on-the-JE) is negatively related to turnover intentions and mediates relationships between CBHRP and employees' intention to quit.

Open Market Share Repurchase Programs And Corporate Governance: Company Performance, Gary Caton, Jeremy Goh, Yen Teik Lee, Scott C. Linn

Payout policies based on share repurchase programs provide greater flexibility than do those based on cash dividends. We develop and test an empirical model in which strongly-governed companies outperform weakly-governed companies after announcing share repurchase programs. Our findings include positive associations between strong governance and both post-announcement adjusted operating performance and abnormal stock returns. The results are robust to sample selection bias, different sample criteria, governance measurement, and various control variables. In addition, governance strength is associated with larger post-announcement changes in CEO incentive compensation and merger and acquisition activity, both of which we argue are consistent with strongly-governed companies …

Industry Interdependencies And Cross-Industry Return Predictability, David E. Rapach, Jack Strauss, Jun Tu, Guofu Zhou

We use the adaptive LASSO from the statistical learning literature to identify economically connected industries in a general framework that accommodates complex industry interdependencies. Our results show that lagged returns of interdependent industries are significant predictors of individual industry returns, consistent with gradual information diffusion across industries. Using network analysis, we find that industries with the most extensive predictive power are key central nodes in the production network of the U.S. economy. Further linking cross-return predictability to the real economy, lagged employment growth for the interdependent industries predicts individual industry employment growth. The main challenge for a container terminal is to maximize its throughput using limited resources subject to various operational constraints under uncertainty. Traditional methods try to achieve this through an optimized plan by solving a quay crane scheduling problem; but the plan may become obsolete or infeasible after shocks (changes in the system due to uncertainty). To respond to shocks these methods require frequent re-planning, which increases the operations cost. We propose a new method to counter this. Instead of creating plans, we develop an operating protocol to respond to shocks without re-planning. Under this protocol, each quay crane along …

PEG is a newer investment ratio measure of a security’s PE ratio divided by the firm’s growth rate as a percentage. It is examined and contrasted with other investment valuation measures. PEG is shown to be problematic in terms of its units of measure, in what it purports to appropriately determine, and it is non monotonic for relatively profitable firms and is only slightly indicative of correct security selection for relatively unprofitable firms.

Past research has examined the die-hard fans’ characteristics, consumption behaviors, and attending motivation of avid sport fans. The study further evaluated those fans’ characteristics and motivation through a series of qualitative interview questions based on the conceptual frameworks of loyalty, fan motivation, fan identity, and “sport-as-religion.” The participants were 24 season-ticket holders of a Mid-west professional football team who also identified themselves as a fan of football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Their fanship varied from collegiate to professional level teams of various locations.
