Can Sharing Be Taxed?, Shu-Yi Oei, Diane M. Ring

In the past few years, we have seen the rise of a new model of production and consumption of goods and services, often referred to as the “sharing economy.” Fueled by startups such as Uber and Airbnb, sharing enables individuals to obtain rides, accommodations, and other goods and services from peers via personal computer or mobile application in exchange for payment. The rise of sharing has raised questions about how it should be regulated, including whether existing laws and regulations can and should be enforced in this new sector or whether new ones are needed.
In this Article, we explore …

Agency Costs In Law-Firm Selection: Are Companies Under-Spending On Counsel?, Elisabeth De Fontenay
Faculty Scholarship
A growing body of literature examines whether corporate clients derive sufficient value from the law firms that they engage. Yet little attention has been paid to whether clients optimally select among law firms in the first place. One entry-point is to identify discrepancies in the quality of counsel selected by different corporate clients for the very same work. Using a large sample of loans, this Article finds that major U.S. public companies select lower-ranked law firms for their financing transactions than do private equity-owned companies, controlling for various deal characteristics. While some of this discrepancy can be attributed to value-maximizing …

Businesses face a myriad of risks from both within and outside the organization. Potential losses may arise from property damage due to weather, flooding, or fire, encompassing buildings, fixtures, and equipment. Liability concerns are present when a third party sustains injury while on the premises, or when another entity believes the business caused some sort of monetary damage to its operations. Additional risks include theft of business assets, whether those assets are in the physical form, such as inventory and equipment, or in the intangible form like proprietary production processes and secret recipes. Insurance coverage may be acquired to mitigate …

A Structural Model Of Managing E-Commerce Transaction Quality And Perceived Online Transaction Value, Qian Xiao
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
A significant amount of online transactions have occurred through the widespread usage of e-commerce portals as intermediaries. These e-commerce portals such as www.ebay.com and www.amazon.com, manage the online exchange network, and facilitate the peer-to-peer business transactions. Researchers have developed different measures of e-commerce platform quality and explored its relationships to the user experience and firm performance. Built on the literature of online transaction quality, this study develops a conceptual framework that illustrates how the e-commerce platform quality and the transaction handling process will shape users’ perceived transaction value and the resulting experience evaluation.

Improvement Of Under-Represented Minority Individuals In The Healthcare Field Of Communication Sciences And Disorders, Allison Webb
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Individuals from under-represented minority backgrounds are scarce within healthcare careers. Former research has suggested that this lack of diversity begins at the undergraduate level. This proposal discusses a potential solution to this problem occurring at the University of Kentucky and other colleges across the United States. Suggested intervention targeted diverse populations, connected students with faculty and staff, and provided shadowing resources for individuals from under-represented minority backgrounds. Based on research and current diversity statistics, populations of individuals from diverse backgrounds are expected to increase within the Communication Sciences and Disorders program. Demographic information for the fall 2016 semester will become …

Characteristics Of United States Seafood Consumers, Suliman Almojel
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
In this thesis, I conducted an analysis of the consumption patterns associated with demographic and socio-economic characteristics, using Tobit and double-hurdle models. Data were collected for 11,574 households from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics for the year of 2014. Specific determinants included household size, age, income, gender, education, race, region, marital status, and whether the household lived in a coastal state. The results reveal that seafood expenditures are sequential decisions. Asian racial groups, households headed by married couples, a large number of members in households, higher income households, and households residing in the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts were variables …
Exploring The Role Of Entrepreneurship In The Growth And Development Of The Smaller State., Anthony Paul Buckley
Exploring The Role Of Entrepreneurship In The Growth And Development Of The Smaller State., Anthony Paul Buckley
Conference papers
The median sovereign state size in the world has a population of 6.2m with 73 per cent of the states having a population under 20m (World Bank, 2014). Despite this, the mainstream literatures in most academic disciplines have chosen to neglect the unique determinants of smaller state growth and development. The purpose of this exploratory paper is to investigate whether smaller developed states actually perform better than other states and why? More specifically it investigates the role that entrepreneurship plays in this performance. This paper utilises an exploratory ‘cross-case’ analytic approach (Yin, 2014) in attempting to identify cross case patterns …

By means of an action research project, my goal is to create economic opportunity for the HIV/AIDS community in Chiang Mai, Thailand, through the creation of the social enterprise Trashé Designs. A social enterprise is a way to address a social challenge with a market-based solution. My social enterprise, Trashé Designs, uses recycled materials to …

Review Of Factors Influencing Employees’ Willingness To Share Knowledge, Paul Mc Manus, Mohamed Ragab, Amr Arisha, Sue Mulhall
Conference papers
Effective management of knowledge is currently recognised as the foundation of any organisation to maximise its abilities and achieve business targets. Organisations strive to leverage knowledge stocks – mostly held in the minds of their individual employees – in order to create value and drive success. For organisations to promote effective knowledge management, they have to develop innovative methods to encourage knowledge sharing practices. Knowledge sharing (KS) is a vital organisational process which empowers individuals to confront challenges of uncertainty and complexity, instils best practices, and enables the transfer of knowledge between different parts of the organisation. Given the fact …
Examining The Factors To Knowledge Sharing Within An Organisational Context, Paul Mc Manus
Examining The Factors To Knowledge Sharing Within An Organisational Context, Paul Mc Manus
Conference papers
Abstract
In a global economy, knowledge may be a company’s greatest competitive advantage (Davenport & Prusak 2000). As such, competition for this resource has driven an increased demand for “a conscious strategy [by organisations] of getting the right knowledge to the right people at the right time and helping people share and put information into action in ways that strive to improve organisational performance” (O’Dell et al. 1998). Thus, it is the aim of this paper to provide an investigative look at the factors influencing the willingness of employees to knowledge share (KS) within an organisational context. Separated into two …

Publically–Funded Technology Start-Up Incubators – Evaluating Their Role And Contribution., Anthony Paul Buckley, Stephen Davis
Conference papers
Technology start-up incubators are one of a number of micro-policy interventions with which states attempts to support technology entrepreneurs. This paper outlines the challenges associated with evaluating start-up incubator services and advocates theory-based evaluation (TBE) methodology as a possible solution for effective evaluation in complex research settings such as this. An exploratory case study is used to illustrate the proposed TBE approach.

An Integrated Approach Of Multi-Objective Optimization Model For Evaluating New Supporting Program In Irish Hospitals, Wael Rashwan, Heba Habib, Amr Arisha, Garry Courtney, Sean Kennelly
Conference papers
Hospitals are witnessing an inexorable growth in emergency admissions, which results in overcrowding and a poorer patient experience. The Acute Medicine Program (AMP) is one of the programs developed by the Irish health authority aimed at improving patient experience. To review the AMP intervention, this study applies a model that integrates three analytical approaches: simulation, multivariate factor analysis and multi-objective optimization. The simulation identified 14 different factors affecting five responses that were used to develop a Design of Experiments (DoE). Multivariate factor analysis used the DoE to determine the factors creating ‘bottlenecks’, such as downstream resources. The multi-objective optimization model, …
The Concept Of 'Knowledge Creating': Re-Conceptualising The Problems Of Knowledge Transfer And Creation Processually, Conor Horan
The Concept Of 'Knowledge Creating': Re-Conceptualising The Problems Of Knowledge Transfer And Creation Processually, Conor Horan
Conference papers
How knowledge is created remains the subject of much debate (Kuhn, 1962). In fields of management, organisation studies and knowledge management, the hegemonic approach to studying the role of knowledge in management, and how it comes into being has predominantly been influenced by a knowledge transfer agenda. Recent attempts to explore a specific theory of knowledge creation (Nonaka, 1994) per se, have continued to rely on assumptions inherited from this knowledge transfer agenda. Here ‘events of transfer’ have been replaced with an emphasis on ‘events of creation’ suggesting that events of organisational knowledge creation require similar solutions to those addressing …

Youtube Money: The Impact Of Brand Management On Online Video Companies, Samantha Perry
Honors Program Theses
Many YouTube channels today operate not only as miniature media outlets, but as fully functional media companies operating independently through advertising revenue. The top creators of content on YouTube bring in millions of dollars of revenue each year. This thesis seeks to answer the question of how content creators can harness the power of brand management strategy in order to maximize revenue and grow their audiences over time. I overview current trends among content creators industry-wide, and then focus on a group of channels to analyze their brand management habits on- and off-line. I then examine data from brands’ videos …
Influential Factors In Encouraging Or Dissuading Orlando Businesses To Seek Leed Certification, Katrina M. Zdanowicz
Influential Factors In Encouraging Or Dissuading Orlando Businesses To Seek Leed Certification, Katrina M. Zdanowicz
Honors Program Theses
Orlando, Florida, is home to 85 building projects that have received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and 74 projects that are in the process of seeking certification. Over 90 percent of these 159 buildings have been or are being rated by LEED commercial standards. This paper argues that while LEED has played a valuable role in encouraging environmentally sustainable design in the Orlando commercial sector and will continue to be a significant presence in sustainability discussions, local government legislation can assist the end-goals of LEED by promoting more localized initiatives. The benefits of LEED certification include …
