Evolution Of Physician-Centric Business Models Under The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act, Tanya Nix, Lynn Szostek

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

For decades, the cost of medical care in the United States has increased exponentially. United States citizens spend twice as much as their European counterparts on medical care. Congress enacted the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) to ensure affordable healthcare to the citizens of the United States. PPACA legislation is creating a new paradigm in healthcare delivery and provider business models. The purpose of this case study was to explore physicians’ perspectives regarding physician-centric business models evolving under the requirements of the PPACA legislation. Data were gathered through semistructured interviews and questionnaires with a purposive sample of 75 …

E-Government Initiatives Case Study: New Models For Success, Douglass P. Smith Jan 2016

E-Government Initiatives Case Study: New Models For Success, Douglass P. Smith

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This case study examines the efforts of a mid-tier, cabinet-level state agency to transform its constituency services to be more effective using information technology. The agency, based in a rural Midwestern state, faced increased scrutiny to raise accuracy, lower wait times, decrease expenditures, increase constituency satisfaction, and expand services to the state. To meet these challenges, the agency conducted a series of meetings to determine best possible opportunities for change and decided that technology solutions, which supported their business vision of the future, would be the foundation for that change. Redesigning core organizational processes—using several technologies such as e-commerce, content …

The Impact Of Age On Workplace Motivation: A Person-Centered Perspective, Keith Lynn Zabel Jan 2016

The Impact Of Age On Workplace Motivation: A Person-Centered Perspective, Keith Lynn Zabel

Wayne State University Dissertations

The present study used the person-centered approach to examine how profiles based upon six different age conceptualizations differentially impact workplace motivation. In the first known study to examine all conceptualizations of age simultaneously, results suggested the age conceptualizations of subjective age and health significantly impact growth motives for older workers, but not social or security motives. Results suggest social motives are influenced more by chronological age as opposed to other conceptualizations of age. Implications for practitioners in designing and implementing HR activities (e.g., succession planning) and researchers in utilizing all the conceptualizations of age and studying workplace interventions are discussed.

Exploring Crossover Effects Among Working Spouses Through The Lens Of Social Cognitive Theory: Soc And Work-Family Conflict, Kevin Thomas Wynne Jan 2016

Exploring Crossover Effects Among Working Spouses Through The Lens Of Social Cognitive Theory: Soc And Work-Family Conflict, Kevin Thomas Wynne

Wayne State University Dissertations

Managing competing demands from multiple life domains poses a significant challenge for today's workforce. In particular, employees who also have an active role at home often experience work-family conflict (WFC), which is associated with a number of negative outcomes. Research has shown that the selection, optimization, and compensation (SOC) set of coping strategies includes behaviors that tend to reduce WFC. However, it remains unknown how working spouses' use of these effective strategies "crossover" to influence the partner’s outcomes. Do individuals' use of SOC coping strategies reduce their spouse's experience of WFC? Using an emergent data analytic method—the actor-partner interdependence model …

Planning Strategies For Home Health Care Delivery, Mike Hewitt, Maciek Nowak, Nisha Nataraj Jan 2016

Planning Strategies For Home Health Care Delivery, Mike Hewitt, Maciek Nowak, Nisha Nataraj

Information Systems and Operations Management: Faculty Publications & Other Works

In home health care, continuity of care, wherein a patient is always visited by the same nurse, can be just as important as cost, as it is closely correlated to quality of care. While a patient typically receives care for two to three months, such that assigning a nurse to a patient impacts operations for lengthy periods of time, previous research focusing on continuity of care uses planning horizons that are often a week or shorter. This paper computationally demonstrates that considering a long planning horizon in this setting has significant potential for savings. Initially, a deterministic setting is considered, …

Purchasing Efficiency Measurement Of Selected Electric Vehicles In The United States Utilizing Data Envelopment Analysis, Jonathan Svoboda, Derek Lagasse

Undergraduate Review

Consumers today face an ever-increasing number of choices when deciding what purchases to make. Nowhere is this more apparent than the market for vehicles. Many factors affect a consumer’s ultimate decision of what vehicle to purchase or lease. Further, electric vehicles present the consumer with additional unique considerations. This study evaluates the decision making process used by consumers in purchasing an electric vehicle. The decision making units (DMUs) used in this research include manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP), range in miles, miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), cargo space in cubic feet, and charge time in hours. These variables are factors …

Dancing Fire, Helena Alfajora Jan 2016

Dancing Fire, Helena Alfajora

Canterbury Scholars

My creative process is like the Hero’s Journey. Wrought with “the call to action,” I felt a call from these pieces to bring them into our material world—the ideas, the moods, the colors wanting to translate from my mind through my hand and now, into this room. Through all the musings of our daily lives, these pieces came to be through different mediums with different mentors and different mindsets. The one constant throughout was my content, my inspiration, my grounding—the Hawaiian goddess, Pele.

Her form takes place in art, dance, written words, life, nature, my family, those around me. In …

The Treatment Of Six Sigma In Introductory Operations Management Textbooks: Clearing Up The Confusion, Handanhal Ravinder, Ram B. Misra Jan 2016

The Treatment Of Six Sigma In Introductory Operations Management Textbooks: Clearing Up The Confusion, Handanhal Ravinder, Ram B. Misra

Department of Management Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper critically examines the treatment of the statistical basis for Six Sigma and process capability in popular operations management textbooks. It discusses areas of confusion and suggest ways of treating the topic that make sense to instructors as well as students. Even though Six Sigma was introduced almost 30 years ago, misconceptions persist. In the textbooks we have found no consistency of approach or understanding of the statistical underpinnings (3.4 defects per million opportunities) of Six Sigma. Sometimes statements are made that are factually incorrect and cause frustration for students and instructors. Similar difficulties are encountered in discussions of …

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

The aim of this article is to analyze the linkages between and spillovers from foreign-owned (foreign) to domestic-owned (domestic) firms in the Czech automotive industry. Theoretically and conceptually, our research draws on two strands of literature: spillovers, linkages and effects of foreign direct investment on domestic firms and regional economic development; and literature on global production networks, global value chains and industrial upgrading. Empirical analysis is based upon unique data collected by the authors through a questionnaire completed by 317 foreign and domestic firms in 2009 and on-site interviews with 100 firms conducted between 2009 and 2011. A Case Study Exploration Of Blue-Collar Worker Retirement Plan Investment Decisions, Mark Griffin, Steven Tippins Jan 2016

A Case Study Exploration Of Blue-Collar Worker Retirement Plan Investment Decisions, Mark Griffin, Steven Tippins

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

The finances of blue-collar workers were the most acutely impacted as these workers lost their jobs during the Great Recession of 2007 through 2009. The literature revealed a minimal understanding of how blue-collar workers allocated funds for their retirement, and what their investments might be when they invested. To address this problem, the current qualitative study addressed (a) how blue-collar workers chose to invest or not invest for retirement and (b) how blue-collar workers diversified their portfolio if they chose to invest. Theoretical foundations of the study were based on regret theory and prospect theory. A nonrandom purposeful sample of …

Risk Management In The Venture Capital Industry: Managing Risk In Portfolio Companies, Dorian Proksch, Wiebke Stranz, Andreas Pinkwart, Michael Schefczyk Jan 2016

Risk Management In The Venture Capital Industry: Managing Risk In Portfolio Companies, Dorian Proksch, Wiebke Stranz, Andreas Pinkwart, Michael Schefczyk

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Managing risk is one of the main activities of venture capital companies. Despite the fact that this topic is of high practical relevance, only little research was published on risk management performed by venture capital companies in their ventures. Hence, we conducted a structured literature review which was the basis for developing five hypotheses concerning measures to decrease failure risk in venture capital-backed ventures. We tested these hypotheses with an empirical data set of 93 venture capital-backed ventures in Germany using original deal data from nine different venture capital funds using a structural equation model. We showed that the experience …

Imsa360: 2016, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

About ten years ago I tried to explain to my wife what made IMSA such an important, life-changing place for me. That explanation turned into a 329 page novel (my first published young adult novel), that I still think only scratched the surface of what makes IMSA such a wondrous, rare, and crucial place.

Can an academic librarian who has only worked on the front lines compete with those who have supervisory experience for middle management positions? What traits are hiring committees looking for in middle managers for public services, especially in applicants with no prior supervisory experience? While the literature does provide tips and advice for new managers, as yet there are no studies examining what hiring committees look for in middle management applicants.

This study has taken a three-pronged approach to data collection: a qualitative study consisting of interviews with academic librarians who have served on hiring committees for middle-management positions, and …

Project Risk Propagation Modeling Of Engineering, Procurement And Construction, Alireza Atin Jan 2016

Project Risk Propagation Modeling Of Engineering, Procurement And Construction, Alireza Atin

Wayne State University Dissertations

The construction industry is complicated since it involves a variety of stakeholders, challenging environmental issues, huge investments, complex economic and political factors, and other features which may cause an uncertain and unpredictable environment for construction projects. Impacts of risk events can transfer from one phase (source) of a construction project to another phase (target) very quickly and can cause more damage in other phases. Thus, two surveys were conducted to understand the risk propagation phenomena among the engineering, procurement, and construction phases. We conducted two surveys and analyzed data acquired by using sensitive analysis and binary logistic regression modeling. Risk …

Gamer Girls: Navigating A Subculture Of Gender Inequality, Robert L. Harrison, Jenna M. Drenten, Nicholas Pendarvis

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Purpose

Video gaming, which remains culturally embedded in masculine ideals, is increasingly becoming a leisure activity for female consumers. Guided by social dominance theory, this paper examines how female gamers navigate the masculine-oriented gaming consumption context.

Methodology/approach

Eight avid female gamers (ages 20–29) participated in-depth interviews, following a phenomenological approach to better understand their lived experiences with video gaming. Data were analyzed using phenomenological procedures.

Findings

Findings reveal an undercurrent of gender-based consumer vulnerability, driven by stereotypical perceptions of “gamer girls” in the masculine-oriented gaming subculture. Further, the findings highlight the multilayered, multidimensional nature of gaming as a vulnerable consumption …

Determining The Efficiency Of Disposable Baby Diapers Through Data Envelopment Analysis, Joseph Baker, Jenna Bernasconi

Undergraduate Review

Following the patent of the disposable diaper in the late 1940s, the popularity of the disposable diaper drastically increased. Various companies, including Johnson & Johnson and Proctor & Gamble, continuously compete with each other to create the “best” disposable diaper product. This project compares 12 of the most popular brands of disposable diapers to determine the efficiency of each diaper and what changes could be made to increase efficiency, when applicable.
