Effects Of Remanufacturable Product Design On Market Segmentation And The Environment, Tianqin Shi, Wenjun Gu, Dilip Chhajed, Nicholas Petruzzi Apr 2016

Effects Of Remanufacturable Product Design On Market Segmentation And The Environment, Tianqin Shi, Wenjun Gu, Dilip Chhajed, Nicholas Petruzzi

Faculty Publications

Despite documented benefits of remanufacturing, many manufacturers have yet to embrace the idea of tapping into remanufactured-goods markets. In this article, we explore this dichotomy and analyze the effect of remanufacturable product design on market segmentation and product and trade-in prices by studying a two-stage profit-maximization problem in which a price-setting manufacturer can choose whether or not to open a remanufactured-goods market for its product. Our results suggest that it is optimal for a manufacturer to design a remanufacturable product when the value-added from remanufacturing is relatively high but product durability is relatively low and innovation is nominal. In addition, …

Rotten To The Core, Trevor W. Mcdonald

Senior Year Experience Student Projects

The goal of the Rotten to the Core Drag Show was to raise funds and donate a portion of ticket sales to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS while also increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS. This is a cause that educates individuals on the realities of the diseases, but also preventable measures. By coordinating this production and donating a percentage of ticket sales, I am helping to progress the cause of awareness to everyone. We took some time in the production to talk about the organization, the cause and the importance of activism and awareness. The promotions and marketing also showcased the donations …

The Anatomy Of Bank Performance During Transition: A Separate Efficient Frontier Analysis Of Ukrainian Banks, Ihsan Isik, Larissa Kyj, Ihsan Kulali

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

By drawing on Ukrainian experience, this paper analyzes the anatomy of bank efficiency in a transitional economy. Acknowledging the vast disparities in the business technology of different size banks, in this comprehensive study, we innovatively estimate group-specific (distinct) frontiers for small, medium, and large size banks. The results from separate frontiers reveal that Ukrainian banks record 38% technical inefficiency, 26% pure technical inefficiency, and 17% scale inefficiency on average. Apparently, banks in transition waste about the two fifths of their factor inputs during the production of financial services. The cardinal source of sub-performance in transitional banks seems to be managerial …

How Do Household Characteristics Affect Children’S School Dropouts? Analysis Of Survey Data From Bangladesh, Nusrat Farah

2016 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

This paper presents evidence on how children’s educational outcomes are affected by family, social and economic backgrounds in a developing economy by exploiting data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2011. In a developing country like Bangladesh, a child’s educational outcome is not only dependent on government policies but also on the child’s social and economic background. In this paper an attempt has been made to answer the question — how household conditions affect the educational attainments of children. To answer this question an examination of proximate factors associated with school dropouts has been conducted by developing Ordinary …

Teaching Accounting Appreciation At The British Museum And In Your Classroom, J. Riley Shaw, Dale L. Flesher

Accounting Historians Notebook

Every year the University of Mississippi offers an accountancy study abroad class in London, England. The title of the graduate-level class is “The Development of Accounting Thought.” The class is intended to help the students think about how accounting started as a discipline and about accounting’s contributions to society. One of the highlights of that trip is the visit to the British Museum to examine the cuneiform documents. This visit to the British Museum and the cuneiform exhibit serves to focus the students’ attention on accountancy’s contributions to the ancient world and to modern society.

The Patent Spiral, Roger Allan Ford Apr 2016

The Patent Spiral, Roger Allan Ford

Law Faculty Scholarship

Examination — the process of reviewing a patent application and deciding whether to grant the requested patent — improves patent quality in two ways. It acts as a substantive screen, filtering out meritless applications and improving meritorious ones. It also acts as a costly screen, discouraging applicants from seeking low-value patents. Yet despite these dual roles, the patent system has a substantial quality problem: it is both too easy to get a patent (because examiners grant invalid patents that should be filtered out by a substantive screen) and too cheap to do so (because examiners grant low-value nuisance patents that …

Synchonizing U.S. States' Strategic Plans To Increase Exports To Emerging Markets, Jayati Ghosh, Denise M. Lucy, Françoise O. Lepage Apr 2016

Synchonizing U.S. States' Strategic Plans To Increase Exports To Emerging Markets, Jayati Ghosh, Denise M. Lucy, Françoise O. Lepage

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The United States seeks to increase and expand exports to emerging markets. The majority of U.S. firms (98 percent) are small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) with only 1 percent engaging in exporting. The Federal and State Governments encourage SMEs to expand exporting through the National Export Initiative (NEI) and NEI/NEXT initiatives. This paper examines NEI’s progress and strategies by leading U.S. exporting states, export activity to BRICSA, states’ alignment with NEI and the extent to which NEI has facilitated federal and state collaboration. Further, it reviews NEI/NEXT objectives and strategies to internationalize U.S. business practices.

The Magic Behind Success: What Can Business Leaders Learn From Magicians Regarding Creativity And Communication?, John Logan

Honors Projects in Communication

The following research demonstrates the connection between the art of magic and the world of business. More specifically, it explores the overlap between the innovation and communication techniques magicians use when creating new ideas, developing a routine, performing, and a parallel comparison on what it takes to run a successful business. The capstone will first look at what the "magician" is including the types of tricks they perform. It will then analyze the entrepreneurial magicians and their creative process behind developing new routines. Finally, it will examine the verbal and non-verbal communication techniques magicians use to connect with their audience …
