The Documentality Of Ethics – Codes Of Library Ethics As Support Of Professional Practice, Joacim Hansson

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This study analyzes codes of ethics, seen as documents, and their role in supporting the professional practice of librarianship. Theoretically it is placed within the scholarly discussion on the role and function of documents in various practices. Specific interest is directed towards the concept of ”performative documentality”. Empirically, the analysis is concentrated on one example, the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association (ALA). Both the immediate pre-history of this code, and its subsequent editions are described and analyzed in relation to the given theoretical position. Results show that the development ALA code of ethics corresponds to the ideas …

An Empirical Application Of Fuzzy Qfd To Improve The Relationship Quality Of The Home Delivery, Tsung-Yu Chou, Ming-Tao Chou Jun 2016

An Empirical Application Of Fuzzy Qfd To Improve The Relationship Quality Of The Home Delivery, Tsung-Yu Chou, Ming-Tao Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents an extended quality function deployment (QFD) approach that incorporates fuzzy logic to decrease the subjectivity of relationship strength and equip enterprises with better improvement techniques to fulfill customers’ needs and enhance their relationship quality. The proposed fuzzy QFD (FQFD) model is simple, flexible, and easy to understand. The empirical case examined in this paper demonstrates the efficiency of the process and indicates five critical techniques for improving quality of relationship with the customer. Overall, the FQFD approach requires only an average amount of data that can be collected quickly. The requisite calculations do not require any sophisticated …

Service Innovation At Keelung International Harbor, Ming-Chung Lii, Yuh-Ling Su, Kung-Don Ye Jun 2016

Service Innovation At Keelung International Harbor, Ming-Chung Lii, Yuh-Ling Su, Kung-Don Ye

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Growing competition among international harbors has changed the core port operating strategy from pursuing efficiency to innovation. Most academic studies of innovation have focused on products and manufacturing processes rather than on service innovation, especially in the field of international harbor. Accordingly, this study investigated service innovation in an international harbor to evaluate the applicability of the service concept for guiding the direction of effort by international harbors. Since the idea of service innovation is just in the initial stage, the purpose of this work is trying to explore set of indices that can well measure service innovation performance of …

An Interval-Valued Fuzzy Number Approach For Supplier Selection, Chan-Shal Lee, Cheng-Chi Chung, Hsuan-Shih Lee, Guo-Ya Gan, Ming-Tao Chou Jun 2016

An Interval-Valued Fuzzy Number Approach For Supplier Selection, Chan-Shal Lee, Cheng-Chi Chung, Hsuan-Shih Lee, Guo-Ya Gan, Ming-Tao Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Supplier assessment in supply chain management and electronic marketplaces plays an important role in the business transaction. Many methods have been proposed to deal with the supplier selection problems. Some of them are based on fuzzy set theory. However, traditional fuzzy numbers cannot precisely express the vagueness in the decision process. In this paper, we are going to propose a new fuzzy multiple criteria decision making model based on interval-valued fuzzy numbers to tackle the supplier selection problem in the circumstances where uncertainty is introduced. Usually, fuzzy numbers are employed to express uncertainty. For a fuzzy number, the degree of …

A Comparison Of Models Used For Aircraft Tractor Supplier Selection From A Financial Perspective, Chang-Shu Tu, Chan-Shal Lee, Shing-Chih Yang, Hsuan-Shih Lee Jun 2016

A Comparison Of Models Used For Aircraft Tractor Supplier Selection From A Financial Perspective, Chang-Shu Tu, Chan-Shal Lee, Shing-Chih Yang, Hsuan-Shih Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Aircraft tractor supplier selection (ATSS) is critical for equipment procurement management in airport ground handling service (AGHS) companies because it guarantees the work safety of airport ramps. Although AGHS ATSS plays a crucial role in the safety of ground handling ramp operations, few studies have analyzed the ATSS of AGHS companies. This paper describes a new approach to compare the Delphi method, analytic hierarchy process, involvement cost-factor measures, and multi-choice goal programming by considering both financial and nonfinancial factors for ATSS from a financial perspective. In particular, we introduce a real case to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed approach.

An Alternate Functionality Reality, Harold R. Weinberg Jun 2016

An Alternate Functionality Reality, Harold R. Weinberg

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

The Supreme Court last addressed trade dress law’s functionality doctrine in TrafFix Devices, Inc. v. Marketing Displays, Inc. decided in 2001. This article applies content analysis to data from post-TrafFix functionality cases to provide insights concerning the functionality doctrine. It emphasizes data from cases concerning motions for summary judgment and preliminary injunction. The analysis employs two conceptual constructs: a “useful/aesthetic continuum” and “mixed-character” design features. The article also considers data in light of a “two-bar mandate” and two principles: “useful-scarcity” and “aesthetic-abundance.” It concludes with observations concerning the post-TrafFix functionality doctrine and suggestions for improving its judicial …

Two Essays On Lottery-Type Stocks, Yun Meng Jun 2016

Two Essays On Lottery-Type Stocks, Yun Meng

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the first essay titled “Monthly Cyclicality in Retail Investors’ Liquidity and Lottery-type Stocks at the Turn of the Month”, we find that the well-documented underperformance of lottery stocks masks a within-month cyclical pattern. Demand for lottery stocks increases at the turn of the month especially in areas whose demographic profile resembles that of the typical lottery-ticket buyers (i.e., gamblers) driving their prices higher at the turn of the month. This effect is particularly pronounced among firms located in areas whose demographic profile resembles that of the typical lottery-ticket buyer and propelled by the within-month cyclicality of local investors’ personal …

Research On Problem Gambling Websites, Chang Boon Patrick Lee Jun 2016

Research On Problem Gambling Websites, Chang Boon Patrick Lee

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

This is a continuation of a series of studies on problem gambling websites. It has been noted in prior studies that one avenue problem gamblers might look for help was to go online to perform a web search. Online help is practical as help can be located immediately and this can help to ease the gamblers’ concerns that they are left alone to handle their own problems. While there are some anecdotal evidences regarding the success of problem gambling websites, there have been few empirical studies that relate directly to the perceptions and usefulness of the websites for the problem …

Optimal Strategy For Gambling Pools, Aaron C. Brown Jun 2016

Optimal Strategy For Gambling Pools, Aaron C. Brown

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

In gambling pools, entrants submit predictions and the prizes are awarded to the prediction or predictions closest to actual outcomes. Some well-known examples are football pools (both the global and American game versions), toto, NCAA March Madness bracket pools and horse racing tournaments. For small pools with complete information about outcome probabilities, exact game theory optimal solutions are straightforward to compute. If there is also complete information about the number and strategy of other players, optimal exploitive strategies are even easier to derive. These problems have been treated in the literature.

This paper argues that the complete information approaches are …

Regulatory Barriers In The Field Of Gambling: How Much Virtuality Can A Bet Take?, Peter Naessens Mr. Jun 2016

Regulatory Barriers In The Field Of Gambling: How Much Virtuality Can A Bet Take?, Peter Naessens Mr.

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Bets are a special type of game of chance. In a certain sense, you could think of all games of chance as a bet (bet that the roulette ball comes to rest in number 7, betting on the correct result in the lottery etc.), but most countries have implemented a categorisation. A categorisation that is not only under pressure online, but just as much in the real world with the introduction of virtual bets.

In Belgium, virtual bets were accepted because bets are highly dependent on events, and players also like to make a bet when no events are taking …

An Empirical Evaluation Of The Clubsnsw (Australia) Multi-Venue Self-Exclusion Program, Dylan A. Pickering, Alexander Blaszczynski, Sally Gainsbury, Rowan Cameron Jun 2016

An Empirical Evaluation Of The Clubsnsw (Australia) Multi-Venue Self-Exclusion Program, Dylan A. Pickering, Alexander Blaszczynski, Sally Gainsbury, Rowan Cameron

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Few empirical studies have evaluated the effectiveness of self-exclusion programs. Research is required to identify factors contributing to decisions to enter and/or breach self-exclusion orders, or to self-excluded gamblers to seek additional treatment. Clinical characteristics of self-excluders remain relatively unknown in addition to factors that differentiate gamblers who do or do not breach. Limitations of current programs are that gamblers can self-exclude from only one or a limited number of venues. The Multi-venue Self-exclusion program, developed and implemented by ClubsNSW (Australia), is a centralised web-based system designed to help problem gamblers self exclude from up to 35 venues at a …

Mandatory Pre-Commitment Loss Limits: Six Years’ Experience Shows It Works, Bjorn H. Hoffmann Jun 2016

Mandatory Pre-Commitment Loss Limits: Six Years’ Experience Shows It Works, Bjorn H. Hoffmann

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The Norwegian state owned company Norsk Tipping is a pioneer in the gambling indusrty with its secure player identification and mandatory registered play across all channels. Knowing who your player is and having a strong link between the player and his consumption of games across all channels (land based, EGM, web and mobile) is an important premise for having a credible responsible gaming platform.

Norsk Tipping introduced in 2009 EGM’s with both pre commitment tools and maximum loss limits. In 2014 we introduced our Internet casino with probably the best responsible gambling platform in the world, including mandatory loss limits. …

Best Practices For Self-Exclusion Reinstatement And Renewal, Alex Price Jun 2016

Best Practices For Self-Exclusion Reinstatement And Renewal, Alex Price

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

While many studies have examined self-exclusion few have focused on the processes through which gamblers return at the end of their agreements. In 2014, the RGC Centre for the Advancement of Best Practices examined voluntary self-exclusion reinstatement and renewal in an effort to develop evidence-informed best-practices for both land-based and online gambling operations. The presentation outlines the findings of the study and the recommended best practices for reintegration and ban renewal.

The study examined a range of practices around the world. In the end the study recommended an active reinstatement process in which all participants are required to apply to …

Monitoring Gambling Impacts In Massachusetts: Honing Strategies And Preventing Harm, Rachel A. Volberg, Amanda Houpt Jun 2016

Monitoring Gambling Impacts In Massachusetts: Honing Strategies And Preventing Harm, Rachel A. Volberg, Amanda Houpt

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

In November 2011, an Act Establishing Expanded Gaming in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was signed into law (Chapter 194 of the Acts of 2011). This legislation permits casinos and slot parlors in Massachusetts under the regulatory auspices of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC). Section 71 of the Expanded Gaming Act requires the MGC to establish an annual research agenda to assist in understanding the effects of casino gambling in Massachusetts and in minimizing the negative impacts. Research activities launched thus far include a comprehensive study of the social and economic impacts of casino gambling in Massachusetts (SEIGMA), a cohort study …

A Public Health-Based Approach To German Gaming Regulation, Knut Walter, Gerhard Buehringer Jun 2016

A Public Health-Based Approach To German Gaming Regulation, Knut Walter, Gerhard Buehringer

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The current situation of the German gambling market can be characterized by an unrelated framework of different legal systems, different regulatory authorities and different control principles, and has led to (1) an increasing number of court decisions and information requests by European Commission questioning parts of that regulatory system, (2) public tolerance of illicit gambling, and consequently (3) a lack of consumer protection.

Taking RENO Model 1.0 and 2.0 seriously, a new and comprehensive regulatory framework based on common consumer protection standards for all types of gambling – land-based and online, state-owned and private operated – has been developed and …

"Gravity Models" Applied To Projections For New Casinos: Techniques And Results, Will E. Cummings Jun 2016

"Gravity Models" Applied To Projections For New Casinos: Techniques And Results, Will E. Cummings

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

All developers of new casinos prepare, or have prepared for them, projections for the likely gaming-revenue performance of those casinos; in many cases; regulatory authorities in North America also require or commission independent third-party assessments of such performance. These projections are very frequently based on "gravity models," applying techniques pioneered by Reilly and Huff to analyze other retail activities in relation to the geographic distribution of competitors and potential customers. In this paper, I review roughly 80 examples of such applications from recent casino-licensing procedures in the U.S., and compare their results.
