An Improved Model For Trust-Aware Recommender Systems Based On Multi-Faceted Trust, Peihu Zhu Aug 2016

An Improved Model For Trust-Aware Recommender Systems Based On Multi-Faceted Trust, Peihu Zhu

Lingnan Theses

As customers enjoy the convenience of online shopping today, they face the problem of selecting from hundreds of thousands of products. Recommender systems, which make recommendations by matching products to customers based on the features of the products and the purchasing history of customers, are increasingly being incorporated into e-commerce websites. Collaborative filtering is a major approach to design algorithms for these systems. Much research has been directed toward enhancing the performance of recommender systems by considering various psychological and behavioural factors affecting the behaviour of users, e.g. trust and emotion.

While e-commerce firms are keen to exploit information on …

Will Analysts Learn From Other Analysts Who Possess Superior Private Information, Hangyuan Shi

Lingnan Theses

Based on a valuable testing venue in China where listed companies are required to disclose corporate site visit records of financial analyst to the public, this study examines whether analysts will learn from visiting analysts' forecasts that contain superior private information. I find that visiting forecasts tend to attract more analysts to issue forecasts in their aftermath than the prior forecasts issued by the same analysts but without conducting corporate site visit (non-visiting forecasts). The following effect is weaker when the visiting forecasts are more informative. In addition, other analysts’ forecasts following the visiting forecasts tend to move closer to …

Olympic Contradictions, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There are times when I think that the Olympics should be wiped off the sports calendar once and for all. Then when the games begin I flip into reverse and find myself watching the performances and admiring the high level of skill on display.

Extending Organizational Memory And Corporate Communications Research Via Autoethnography/Autobiography, Damion Waymer, Nneka Logan Aug 2016

Extending Organizational Memory And Corporate Communications Research Via Autoethnography/Autobiography, Damion Waymer, Nneka Logan

The Qualitative Report

Culture, business, and communication are overlapping human phenomena. However, corporate communication methods have yet to embrace the complexity of organizational culture. Since the study of culture is anthropological in nature, we propose foregrounding autoethnography/autobiographical approaches and method to analyze corporate organizational culture. We argue that studying corporate communication, public relations, and society via the lenses of organizational culture and subsidiary organizational memory can provide unique insights into practice of corporate communication and the theorizing of organizational memory research. In this case example, we answer this question: In what ways can autobiographical/autoethnographic narratives of organizational members inform the theory, research, and …

Good Vibrations: Charting The Dominant And Emergent Discursive Regimes Of Sex Toys, George Rossolatos Aug 2016

Good Vibrations: Charting The Dominant And Emergent Discursive Regimes Of Sex Toys, George Rossolatos

The Qualitative Report

Sex toys promote a new consumptive ethos whose significance may be adequately outlined by attending to the institutional implications of this product category’s consumption. By drawing on Foucault’s theory of sexuality and the technologies of the self that materialize with the aid of discursive formations about sexuality, as well as on relevant sociological and ethnographic insights, I undertake a qualitative content analysis on a corpus of 100 sex toys’ product reviews from popular magazines and web sites in order to identify how the discourse about sex toys is articulated in terms of three dominant categories of sexual scripts (Simon & …

Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Credit Transfer Practices, Lending And Financial Inclusions In North America, Europe And The Middle East, Jessica Henao Barragan

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Many events highlight the relationship between credit availability and aggregate output. Macroeconomic models and financial market conditions have major impacts on the world economy. In addition, these represent the responses to financial chunks that differ in developed countries like the United Kingdom, France, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Canada and the United States. The impact of credit conditions is concerned, as well as the differences in the quality of banking supervision and the effectiveness of monetary policies in different parts of the world. The experience of developed countries sets an example of the integration process inevitably contributing to create an …

A Study On International Trade Risks Of Ocean Freight Forwarders, Tsung-Yu Chou Aug 2016

A Study On International Trade Risks Of Ocean Freight Forwarders, Tsung-Yu Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Ocean freight forwarders play a critical role in the economic development of Taiwan and import/export services are their most important business line. As an integral element of the marine transportation industry, forwarders find themselves exposed to greater risks due to the homogeneity of their services in a highly competitive and changeable marketplace. It is hence essential to develop a model to evaluate trade risks so as to prevent and mitigate such risks, enhance competitive edge and operational sustainability. This paper examines the trade risks undertaken by the ocean freight forwarding industry in Taiwan and applies the algorithms of fuzzy multi-criteria …

Environmental Risk Perceptions Of Port Residents: An Empirical Study On East Side Of Keelung Port, Ya-Ling Yang, Wen-Hwa Shyu, Cheng-Han Li, Ji-Feng Ding Aug 2016

Environmental Risk Perceptions Of Port Residents: An Empirical Study On East Side Of Keelung Port, Ya-Ling Yang, Wen-Hwa Shyu, Cheng-Han Li, Ji-Feng Ding

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Environmental risks management and assessment become essential in dealing with environmental pollution events when we pursue green environment and sustainable transportation policies. Hence, this article investigates the environmental risk perceptions of residents living in neighborhood of east Keelung Port in Taiwan. Using surveyed data collected from questionnaires, the multiple linear regression (MLR) model was used to examine the research hypotheses. We obtained several important findings in this empirical study. Firstly, the risk perceptions index of local residents indicates that pollutions produced in port operations become serious threats to health. Secondly, compensation effect, psychological factors, trust, demographic factors and physical environment …

Mining For Solutions: How Expertise Distribution And Influence Structures Impact Team Improvisation, Karoline Evans Aug 2016

Mining For Solutions: How Expertise Distribution And Influence Structures Impact Team Improvisation, Karoline Evans

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Organizations increasingly must operate in unpredictable, dynamic, and complex situations, and scholars in a wide variety of fields argue that flexibility and adaptation in these changing environments represent important capabilities for high performing groups. In response, teams in these challenging environments often require improvisation to help them react, plan, and execute in a short time frame. Despite widespread acknowledgement in the literature that preparation is essential for teams to be able to productively improvise, few have attempted to define what antecedents would promote and enable it. I develop and test a model of how team structure can influence improvisation. Deriving …

First-Case Operating Room Delays: Patterns Across Urban Hospitals Of A Single Health Care System, Callie M. Cox Bauer, Danielle M. Greer, Kiley B. Vander Wyst, Scott A. Kamelle Aug 2016

First-Case Operating Room Delays: Patterns Across Urban Hospitals Of A Single Health Care System, Callie M. Cox Bauer, Danielle M. Greer, Kiley B. Vander Wyst, Scott A. Kamelle

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose

Operating room delays decrease health care system efficiency and increase costs. To improve operating room efficiency in our system, we retrospectively investigated delay frequencies, causes and costs.

Methods

We studied all first-of-the-day nonemergent surgical cases performed at three high-volume urban hospitals of a large health system from July 2012 to November 2013. Times for patient flow from arrival to procedure start and documented reasons for delay were obtained from electronic medical records. Delay was defined as patient placement in the operating room later than scheduled surgery time. Effects of patient characteristics, late patient arrival to the hospital, number of …

Tipping The Scales: Is Right-To-Work Legislation On The Path To Prosperity?, Jessica Canada Aug 2016

Tipping The Scales: Is Right-To-Work Legislation On The Path To Prosperity?, Jessica Canada

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

With West Virginia having just become the twenty-sixth state to pass right-to-work (RTW) legislation, the U.S. labor relations movement is at a tipping point. Other policy makers are closely watching the recent revival of RTW laws that has occurred over the last five years and are analyzing relevant studies to determine whether passing legislation that would outlaw union shops in their states might be worth a second look.

With this paper I intend to examine one of the dominant arguments against enacting RTW legislation in a state, which is that this legislation results in a greater degree of state-level income …
