Starbucks: Social Responsibility And Tax Avoidance, Katherine Campbell, Duane Helleloid

Management Faculty Publications

This instructional case is designed to explore how accounting choices, and specifically tax minimization practices, should consider a company's overall strategy and positioning within multiple stakeholder groups. Starbucks had been successful in growing its stores and presence in the United Kingdom (UK), and described the profitable growth to investors as something it wanted to build on in other international markets. However, in its 15 years of operations in the UK, the company had paid UK corporate income taxes only once. Using a combination of legal tax avoidance practices (e.g., transfer prices, royalty payments, interest expense), Starbucks UK had effectively shifted …

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Given the volatile economic climate faced in the United States and globally since 2015, there is a desire by politicians in 2016 to increase state economic and business growth. The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council an advocacy and research organization dedicated to protecting small business and promoting entrepreneurship has annually prepared a “Small Business Policy Index” that ranks states according to some …

A Study Of Transformational Leadership, Strategic Flexibility, And Firm Performance: The Moderating Role Of Environmental Dynamism, Weining Li, Jingyu Zhan, Yuan Lu

Journal of Global Business Insights

The relationship between leadership behavior and firm performance has always been a focus of academic research. This study offers a theoretical model that examines strategic flexibility as an intermediate mechanism in the relationship between transformational leadership and firm performance. On the basis of the dynamic environment in China, we tested environmental dynamism as a moderator in this relationship, empirically validated our hypotheses. We conducted questionnaire surveys of the senior managers of 328 companies located mainly in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong, and received 210 valid samples. The results show that strategic flexibility has a fully mediating role in the relationship between …

Restoring The Relevance: Conceptualizing A Collaboration Model For Business Schools, Obed R. Syed, Rosmini Omar

Journal of Global Business Insights

There are growing debates on practicality of academic services offered by business schools. Recent studies suggest business schools to collaborate with stakeholders to restore the relevance. However, there is eclipse in the literature with reference to collaboration models that generally maps the linkage of business schools with stakeholders. Potential stakeholders of business schools in this study are discussed in two broad segments, namely, primary and secondary stakeholders. Primary stakeholders are students and alumni, and secondary stakeholders are business organizations, non-business organizations and academic institutions. To understand and specify needs and expectations of stakeholders, business schools first need definite mission and …

Marketing Strategies For Boutique Hotels: The Case Of Istanbul, Füsun I. Dincer, Mithat Z. Dincer, Zehra B. Avunduk

Journal of Global Business Insights

With the advent of the internet, the rapid development of highly sophisticated information and communication technology (ICT) has had a paramount impact on both consumers and tourism enterprises in the 21stcentury. The fiercely competitive environment of the global tourism market has inevitably encouraged hotel operators to invest more in the latest information technologies (ITs), to give prospective tourists access to lodging information, vacation experiences, and comments about the destinations shared on Social Media (SM) or websites. As a result, hotels, and particularly Boutique Hotel (BH) operators need to closely follow rising tourism trends and harness the newest communication …

Capacity Building For Sustainable Workforce In The Construction Industry, Edelmiro F. Escamilla, Mohammadreza Ostadalimakhmalbaf

The Professional Constructor

Research has shown that the construction industry will face workforce shortages that will increase delivery cost and completion time. The purpose of this paper is to first identify and synthesize the fundamental factors impacting recruitment and retention of the potential construction workforce. A qualitative approach was employed in order to collect and synthesize known factors related to workforce development and capacity building for the construction industry. The paper then presents a conceptual framework for conducting research on capacity generation of a sustainable construction workforce—by considering the impact of family unit and cultural values, career path perceptions, higher educational attainment, and …

Comparing Owner Perceptions Vs. Performance Reality On Construction Management At Risk Public School Projects, Noel Carpenter, Dennis C. Bausman

The Professional Constructor

Over the past decade construction expenditures for education have reached approximately $350 billion with $195 billion of that total spent on K-12 public schools. Public funding through state and local taxes is the primary source of support for construction and school districts are charged with spending these dollars wisely. Within the confines of procurement statutes school districts must select a delivery method that best suits their needs. Two commonly used delivery methods are Design-Bid-Build and Construction Manager at Risk (CM at Risk). This paper examines qualitative and quantitative data collected from one hundred thirty-seven new K-12 school projects constructed in …

Free Fall Of Self-Consolidating Concrete In Walls Three Meters High, Donald J. Phillippi, Katie Loughmiller, Ray Buyle, Michael Cesena Sep 2016

Free Fall Of Self-Consolidating Concrete In Walls Three Meters High, Donald J. Phillippi, Katie Loughmiller, Ray Buyle, Michael Cesena

The Professional Constructor

Self-consolidating concrete, (SCC) is a highly flowable, non-segregating concrete that allows for concrete placement without vibration or external consolidation. SCC also allows rapid concrete placement with reduced labor costs, resulting in vastly improved concrete surface finishes and architectural applications (RMCAO 2009). To accomplish SCC, the concrete industry has developed improvements in high-range water reducer admixtures for flowability and viscosity-modifying admixtures for stability. The current project investigated six specimens, which provided an evaluation of SCC allowed to free fall 3 m (10 ft) that filled wall formwork with different inclinations and amounts of steel reinforcement. The purpose of the investigation was …

Sounds In The Marketplace: Consumer Reactions To Ambient And Product Sounds, Lauren Mayor Sep 2016

Sounds In The Marketplace: Consumer Reactions To Ambient And Product Sounds, Lauren Mayor

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The presence of sounds in the marketplace can be an important driver of customer behavior. To date, the academic literature on sounds in the marketplace has typically focused on how properties of ambient sound, such as volume, pitch, and tempo affect consumer response in terms of consumption speed, quantity, and evaluations. With my research, I fill a gap in the literature on marketplace sounds by exploring how the presence (versus absence) of sound, both in ambient retail environments and embedded in products themselves, can influence spatial estimates, which in turn affects purchase intent and consumption. Specifically, I demonstrate that ambient …

Can Information Be Locked Up? Informed Trading Ahead Of Macro-News Announcements, Gennaro Bernile, Jianfeng Hu, Yuehua Tang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Government agencies routinely allow pre-release access to information to accredited news agencies under embargo agreements. Using high-frequency data, we find evidence consistent with informed trading during embargoes of Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) scheduled announcements. The E-mini Standard & Poor’s 500 futures’ abnormal order imbalances are in the direction of subsequent policy surprises and contain information that predicts the market reaction to the policy announcements. The estimated informed trades’ profits are arguably large. Notably, we find no evidence of informed trading prior to the start of FOMC news embargoes or during lockups ahead of nonfarm payroll, US Producer Price Index, …

The Pipeline Project: Pre-Publication Independent Replications Of A Single Laboratory's Research Pipeline, Martin Schweinsberg, Nikhil Madan, Michelangelo Vianello, S.Amy Sommer, Jennifer Jordan, Et Al, Michael Schaerer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This crowdsourced project introduces a collaborative approach to improving the reproducibility of scientific research, in which findings are replicated in qualified independent laboratories before (rather than after) they are published. Our goal is to establish a non-adversarial replication process with highly informative final results. To illustrate the Pre-Publication Independent Replication (PPIR) approach, 25 research groups conducted replications of all ten moral judgment effects which the last author and his collaborators had “in the pipeline” as of August 2014. Six findings replicated according to all replication criteria, one finding replicated but with a significantly smaller effect size than the original, one …

Managing Emergency Department Crowding Through Improved Triaging And Resource Allocation, Kum Khiong Yang, Sean Shao Wei Lam, Joyce M. W. Low, Marcus Eng Hock Ong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Long waiting times in emergency departments (EDs) not only reduce patients’ perceived quality of care, but also increase crowding which can adversely affect patients’ outcomes. Waiting time has been found to affect patients’ outcomes and is closely associated with delays in the provision of ancillary services to ED patients by the diagnostic/treatment laboratories. The focus of this study is to improve the flow of ED patients by testing alternative triage processes and capacity of physicians, triage nurses and laboratories. Three alternative triage processes are examined for managing the flow of ED patients through shared and dedicated laboratories across different utilization …

This bold step required building a new type of partnership with McKnight’s team of financial advisors — Mellon Capital Management, Mercer, and Imprint Capital (now Goldman Sachs). McKnight and Mellon Capital had to build a new cross sector partnership …

Strengthening Youth Leadership In A Metropolitan Region: Examining Lessons From A Multiyear Community Foundation Initiative, Katie Richards-Schuster, Katie G. Brisson

The Foundation Review

This article examines the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan’s launch of a broad-based, multilayered strategy to promote youth leadership in the region, and showcases what can be accomplished when foundations invest in such strategies.

In partnership with the University of Michigan School of Social Work and the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University, the foundation helped develop comprehensive programs aimed at building the capacity of youth-serving organizations to engage youth as leaders, support a youth-driven research assessment and social-justice project, and provide funds for youth-run efforts aimed at strengthening the region’s schools and communities.
