I specialize in the field of energy economics and the macroeconomy. Currently I am researching the demand and supply side effects of oil markets. I examine the impact of demand and supply shocks in the crude oil market on industrial production in the US and other OECD countries (as opposed to treating oil price shocks as exogenous). My work examines the functional form & structural stability of the relationship between oil prices and the economy using disaggregated data. My research agenda includes the effect of oil prices on labor markets; role of energy policy; and effects of steel prices on …

Co-Opting Capitalism Through Sneaky Social Ventures: Possibilities And Challenges, Latha Poonamallee
TechTalks
My work is based on the premise that capitalism has outlived its utility and society needs new normative frameworks of organizing for building a just, sustainable, and prosperous world. Social ventures offer a vehicle for addressing the grand challenges such as global health, sustainable agriculture, clean technology, and financial inclusion through co-opting capitalism while serving societies. By explicitly and simultaneously focusing on social/environmental impact, underserved markets, and financial sustainability, they disrupt markets, products, and funding models. This has also led to a growth in impact investors and alternative legal forms of incorporation such as the Benefit Corporation, L3C, and Social …

With a wave of recent tax inversion and corporate reorganization discussions, corporate tax strategy has begun to move to the forefront of media, public and Congressional attention. These high-profile inversion strategies have gained momentum and achieved heightened attention, becoming a matter of public policy matter in 2014. While corporate international tax strategies have existed since the dawn of the U.S. federal income tax, inversions in their current form have been active only since the 1980s. Using three predominate inversion cases as a lens, this research intends to fill a gap in the existing literature relating to corporate inversions. By combining …

Evaluating A Chaplain Corps Change Initiative: Examining The Relationship Between Change Beliefs And Job Satisfaction, Steven Thomas Sill
Theses & Dissertations
The Air Force Chaplain Corps is experiencing a period of rapid change that challenges traditional approaches to providing ministry for Air Force personnel. The need for an effective chaplaincy has never been greater; the Air Force’s critical manning shortages and worldwide duty requirements are adding stress and uncertainty to the lives of Airmen (Losey, 2015). To better support these Airmen the Chief of Chaplains directed a change initiative aimed at increasing the effectiveness of unit-based ministry, including aggressive goals for the amount of time spent in direct unit engagement. This study utilized a survey to explore beliefs of Chaplain Corps …

Three factors (cynical attitudes, fearful attitudes, and accepting attitudes) measured attitudes towards organizational change. Three hundred and ten responses were collected via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk online workforce and analyzed. A Pearson’s correlation test …

Alumni Commitment: Exploring The Process Of Transition From Participants To Donors, Tina Siller

Traditionally, the mission and values of institutions of higher education tend to be positioned around nurturing students to realize their full potential. This includes growing students holistically as whole people, through their academic, social, and emotional interactions while enrolled. Through this focus, institutions hope to connect with students and build an emotional connection or affiliation that will last beyond the student years and into the alumni years. Alumni play a pivotal role in institutional advancement in that they serve as sources of support through their active participation, networking representation, serving as community liaisons, and their charitable contributions. Personal Decision Factors Considered By Information Technology Executives: Their Impacts On Business Intentions And Consequent Cloud Computing Services Adoption Rates, Marcus Lee Smith Jr
Personal Decision Factors Considered By Information Technology Executives: Their Impacts On Business Intentions And Consequent Cloud Computing Services Adoption Rates, Marcus Lee Smith Jr
Theses & Dissertations
During its infancy, the cloud computing industry was the province largely of small and medium-sized business customers. Despite their size, these companies required a professionally run, yet economical information technology (IT) operation. These customers used a total value strategy whereby they avoided paying for essential, yet underutilized, resources (e.g., full-time IT personnel and computing equipment with excess capacity) by outsourcing most, if not all, of their entire IT function. Since that time, the cloud industry has expanded the breadth of its service offerings greatly and the economies of scale have reduced the unit price point. In addition, research suggests other …

Blended Learning: Institutional Frameworks For Adoption And Implementation, Anida Duarte
Theses & Dissertations
Blended Learning in education is the future for higher education. The rapid changes in technology combined with a demand for a more agile environment is transforming the traditional classroom and challenging learning models. Higher education has been adapting by moving classroom time into purely online environments. However, the literature suggests the new wave of learning is extracting the best practices from traditional and online models and infusing them into a blended environment. The agility and use of technology allows the non-traditional student to balance a professional career and life demands while still gaining the benefits of face-to-face time in the …

What Factors Help Decide To Report A Concussion Or Not, Anthony Finger
Sport Management Undergraduate
Athletes have the common issue on whether they should report a concussion or to continue to play through it. The athletes often suspect symptoms of concussions but then do not connect them to the injury concussion itself. Personal and external factors play a role in their decision making. The study included six football athletes and two non-football athletes, including a basketball and soccer athlete. The researcher found that athletes chose to play through their injuries and that the biggest factor …
Essays On Asset Management, Lin Sun
Essays On Asset Management, Lin Sun
Dissertations and Theses Collection
Hedge funds managed by listed firms significantly underperform funds managed by unlisted firms. We argue that since the new shareholders of a listed management company typically do not invest alongside the limited partners of the funds managed, the process of going public breaks the incentive alignment between ownership, control, and investment capital, thereby engendering agency problems. In line with the agency explanation, the underperformance is more severe for funds that have low manager total deltas, low governance scores, and no manager personal capital, or that are managed by firms whose stock prices are more sensitive to earnings news. Post IPO, …

Essays On Value Creation In Online Marketplaces, Warut Khern-Am-Nuai
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three essays that study the transformative impact of new information technologies under three specific contexts using both empirical and theoretical approaches. Chapter 2 examines the online review system, which is the new type of information technology that replaces the traditional word-of-mouth communication. Particularly, we study the practice of the platform owner that uses monetary incentives to attract reviewers. The research problem is important as firms, which seek to strengthen their online review platforms, have considered various forms of incentives, including extrinsic rewards, to encourage users to write reviews. We encountered a natural experiment design where one …

Capabilities, Human Development, And Design Thinking: A Framework For Gender-Sensitive Entrepreneurship Programs, Tonia Warnecke
Capabilities, Human Development, And Design Thinking: A Framework For Gender-Sensitive Entrepreneurship Programs, Tonia Warnecke
Faculty Publications
This paper discusses the ways that capabilities and human development theory can guide the creation of entrepreneurship programs, utilizing a framework of human-centered design thinking. It is well known that a variety of institutional factors shape gender outcomes and gender inequality within entrepreneurship, particularly with regard to necessity versus opportunity entrepreneurship and informal versus formal sector entrepreneurship. Failure to understand the diversity of entrepreneurial activity among women, and the connection (or lack thereof) of such activity to human freedom, leads to biased entrepreneurship programs. This paper links social economic theory and practice by: (1) discussing the ways that capabilities and …

Misuse Of Company Time: How The Internet And Social Media Are Creating A New Time Theft, Ryan Hancock
Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

Whether the trends are actually apparent was then connected to an individual’s perception of whether stealing company time is unethical. Data was obtained in this study through a survey. The survey was conducted through direct and behavioral questions of participants. The first half of the survey contained direct questions measuring the respondent’s own usage of social media, their online shopping habits, and whether they do these activities while working. Does A Long-Term Orientation Create Value? Evidence From A Regression Discontinuity, Caroline Flammer, Pratima Bansal
Does A Long-Term Orientation Create Value? Evidence From A Regression Discontinuity, Caroline Flammer, Pratima Bansal
Business Publications
In this paper, we theorize and empirically investigate how a long-term orientation impacts firm value. To study this relationship, we exploit exogenous changes in executives’ long-term incentives. Specifically, we examine shareholder proposals on long-term executive compensation that pass or fail by a small margin of votes. The passage of such “close call” proposals is akin to a random assignment of long-term incentives and hence provides a clean causal estimate. We find that the adoption of such proposals leads to i) an increase in firm value and operating performance―suggesting that a long-term orientation is beneficial to companies―and ii) an increase in …
Marketing Channel Attitudes Of Chinese Business-To-Business Companies: An Empirical Buyer Behavior Study For U.S. Companies Marketing To Chinese B2b Customers, Jonathan Cooley
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
Attracted by the large, growing domestic economy in China, many U.S. companies have decided to enter China providing products and services in the business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) markets. Combined with traditional marketing channels, Internet marketing is rapidly evolving and becoming a critical strategic element in the marketing department’s tool chest. While much is written about B2C markets and consumer preferences, little of the literature addresses the B2B Chinese customers’ attitudes toward the disparate array of traditional and Internet marketing approaches. Even less addresses Chinese B2B purchasing agents’ receptivity to Western companies soliciting them as new customers. This research compares …
