Policy-Making Considerations For Ethical And Sustainable Economic Development, Tipakorn Senathip, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Frank J. Cavico

HCBE Faculty Articles

Leaders of both private and public sector organizations play an important role in bringing about positive and necessary developments in society. This leadership is especially an important consideration for public sector policy-makers to look at the long-term with regards to their policy-making in economic development. Citizens of any society, but particularly an agrarian one, tend to depend on the availability of natural and local resources for their survival and independence. Furthermore, economic development is important for communities and societies to live in a sustainable manner using local resources in a prudent yet efficacious manner. Personality Traits, Burnout, And Emotional Labor Correlation Among Teachers In Pakistan, Amna Khalil, Muhammad Majid Khan, Muhammad Ali Raza, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba

HCBE Faculty Articles

The main purpose of this research is to study the impact of personality on job burnout among educators. Additionally the role of emotional labor on the relationship of personality and burnout is also investigated. In this model, job burnout (exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment) is a dependent variable; personality (extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, openness to experience and conscientiousness) is an independent variable, while emotional labor (surface acting and deep acting) is a mediating variable. To investigate the relationship among above stated variables, correlation and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Questionnaires were used to collect the data from 199 secondary …

The Viability Of Profit-Loss Sharing Models To Finance Small And Medium Enterprises: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Alhanoof Alghamdi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to explore the role of profit-loss sharing (PLS) models to alleviate access to finance for small and medium enterprises in Saudi Arabia, in the light of the stringent requirements of traditional financial institutions, to ensure the growth and development of the SME sector. A central question of this study is the extent to which Islamic banks can adopt profit-loss sharing modes to finance SMEs. The main results present the barriers preventing Islamic banks from the application of profit-loss sharing that increase incidence of agency problems for such institutions. High asymmetry of information and the nature of Islamic …

Personal Power And Trust As Mediators Of The Relationship Between Servant Leadership And Affective Organizational Commitment, George D. Bingham Jan 2017

Personal Power And Trust As Mediators Of The Relationship Between Servant Leadership And Affective Organizational Commitment, George D. Bingham

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

This research was designed to investigate the potential mediating role of personal power and of trust in the relationship between servant leadership and affective organizational commitment. The research responds to calls for increased understanding of the mechanisms at work between leadership models and outcomes. Especially unique in the available literature is the quantitative study of the relationship between servant leadership and personal power. All of the constructs in the research model are based on existing instruments, including those developed for personal power (PP; Hinkin & Schriesheim, 1989; Raven, Schwarzwald, & Koslowsky, 1998), trust (T; Mayer & Gavin, 2005), servant leadership …

The Impact Of Local Economic Development Activities On Perceived Brand Equity In The Higher Education Sector – An Examination Of Three Stakeholder Segments, John R. Lax Jan 2017

The Impact Of Local Economic Development Activities On Perceived Brand Equity In The Higher Education Sector – An Examination Of Three Stakeholder Segments, John R. Lax

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

Branding and brand equity, both as theoretical constructs and as a critical part of applied marketing, have received considerable attention in the academic and practitioner literature. Brand equity, generally considered to be the differential in positive brand image and loyalty enjoyed by one brand as compared to that of a lesser known brand, is often attributed to the activities the firm undertakes to promote the brand and communicate its value or benefits. Branding activities, and the resulting brand equity, have been successfully employed by both consumer and industrial firms and those activities may range from those as conventional as television …

Culture Impact On Perceptions Of Communication Effectiveness, James M. Barry, Sandra S. Graã§A Jan 2017

Culture Impact On Perceptions Of Communication Effectiveness, James M. Barry, Sandra S. Graã§A

HCBE Faculty Articles

Early research on relationship marketing highlights the role of communication in shaping trusted and committed business partnerships. Various studies validate communication as one of the strongest determinants of relationship commitment, loyalty, trust and satisfaction. But, few have studied the predictors of communication effectiveness, especially in a global context. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of cooperation, quality communication, conflict handling and two-way communication as predictors of communication effectiveness. The perception of their impact on increasing communication effectiveness is tested in the context of buyer-supplier relationship in one high-context/relationship-based country (Brazil) and one low-context/rule-based country (U.S.). Structural …

Restaurant Liability For Contaminated Food And Beverages Pursuant To Negligence, Warranty, And Strict Liability Laws, Frank J. Cavico, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Stephen C. Muffler, Marissa Samuel, Nicolas-Michel Polito

HCBE Faculty Articles

Managers, owners and employees of all food providers must make sure that their products are safe, wholesome, and unadulterated prior to selling them. They must all be experts in making, storing, selling, preparing, and serving food. Otherwise, they could hurt consumers and face lawsuits since foodborne illnesses are a serious problem in the United States and around the world. Each year, about 48 million people in the United States suffer from foodborne illnesses that are linked to Salmonella, Norovirus, Listeria, and E. coli. This article examines three legal liability theories of negligence, warranty, and strict liability that are linked to …

How Costly Is A Misspecified Credit Channel Dsge Model In Monetary Policymaking?, Takeshi Yagihashi Jan 2017

How Costly Is A Misspecified Credit Channel Dsge Model In Monetary Policymaking?, Takeshi Yagihashi

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper examines whether misspecification in credit market friction could be costly in the context of monetary policymaking. Using two widely known dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models, we simulate a hypothetical financial crisis and examine how each model performs when the misspecification occurs in the credit channel. We demonstrate that monetary policy suggested by misspecified models tends to destabilize the economy during crisis, even though one of the two models does reasonably well in estimating policy-invariant model parameters. We also show that the opportunity cost of using a misspecified model is high relative to the outcome achieved under a …

Discrete Event Simulation Model For Planning Level 2 “Step-Down” Bed Needs Using Nems, Felipe F. Rodrigues, Gregory S. Zaric, David Stanford Jan 2017

Discrete Event Simulation Model For Planning Level 2 “Step-Down” Bed Needs Using Nems, Felipe F. Rodrigues, Gregory S. Zaric, David Stanford

Business Publications

In highly congested hospitals it may be common for patients to overstay at Intensive Care Units (ICU) due to blockages and imbalances in capacity. This is inadequate clinically, as patients occupy a service they no longer need; operationally, as it disrupts flow from upstream units; and financially as ICU beds are more expensive than ward beds. Step-down beds, also known as Level 2 beds, have become an increasingly popular and less expensive alternative to ICU beds to deal with this issue. We developed a discrete event simulation model that estimates Level 2 bed needs for a large university hospital. The …

“Integrated Reporting Is Like God: No One Has Met Him, But Everybody Talks About Him.” The Power Of Myths In The Adoption Of Management Innovations, Delphine Gibassier, Michelle Rodrigue, Diane-Laure Arjaliès Jan 2017

“Integrated Reporting Is Like God: No One Has Met Him, But Everybody Talks About Him.” The Power Of Myths In The Adoption Of Management Innovations, Delphine Gibassier, Michelle Rodrigue, Diane-Laure Arjaliès

Business Publications

Purpose: This paper analyzes the process through which an IIRC (International Integrated Reporting Council) pilot company adopted “integrated reporting” (IR), a management innovation that merges financial and non-financial reporting.

Design/methodology/approach: We use a seven-year longitudinal ethnographic study based on semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentary evidence to analyze this multinational company’s IR adoption process from its decision to become an IIRC pilot organization to the publication of its first integrated report.

Findings: We demonstrate that the company envisioned IR as a “rational myth” (Hatchuel, 1998; Hatchuel and Weil, 1992). This conceptualization acted as a springboard for IR adoption, with the …

The Passion Of Luc Boltanski: The Destiny Of Love, Violence And Institution, Roger Friedland, Diane-Laure Arjaliès Jan 2017

The Passion Of Luc Boltanski: The Destiny Of Love, Violence And Institution, Roger Friedland, Diane-Laure Arjaliès

Business Publications

On Justification: Economies of Worth (Boltanski and Thévenot, 1991/2006) was a synthetic and comprehensive parsing of common goods, goods that could and had to be justified in public. In response to Bourdieu’s critical sociology, they rather provided a robust and disciplined sociology of critique, the situated requirements of justification. They refused power and violence as integral to the operability of justification. They emphasized the ways in which conventions of worth afforded coordination, not their constitution of or by domination. They refused to make either capitalism, or the state, into primary motors of social order. Indeed, they refused social sphere, structure …

Bitcoin And The Rise Of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations, Ying-Ying Hsieh, Jean-Philippe Vergne Jan 2017

Bitcoin And The Rise Of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations, Ying-Ying Hsieh, Jean-Philippe Vergne

Business Publications

Bitcoin represents the first real-world implementation of a “decentralized autonomous organization” (DAO) and offers a new paradigm for organization design. Imagine working for a global business organization whose routine tasks are powered by a software protocol instead of being governed by managers and employees. Task assignments and rewards are randomized by the algorithm. Information is not channelled through a hierarchy but recorded transparently and securely on an immutable public ledger called “blockchain”. Further, the organization decides on design and strategy changes through a democratic voting process involving a previously unseen class of stakeholders called “miners”. Agreements need to be reached …

Risk, Balanced Skills And Entrepreneurship, Chihmao Hsieh, Simon C. Parker, C. Mirjam Van Praag Jan 2017

Risk, Balanced Skills And Entrepreneurship, Chihmao Hsieh, Simon C. Parker, C. Mirjam Van Praag

Business Publications

This paper proposes that risk aversion encourages individuals to invest in balanced skill profiles, making them more likely to become entrepreneurs. By not having taken this possible linkage into account, previous research has underestimated the impacts both of risk aversion and balanced skills on the likelihood individuals choose entrepreneurship. Data on Dutch university graduates provides evidence which supports this contention. It thereby raises the possibility that even risk-averse people might be suited to entrepreneurship; and it may also help explain why prior research has generated mixed evidence about the effects of risk aversion on selection into entrepreneurship

Categorical Anarchy In The U.K.? The British Media's Classification Of Bitcoin And The Limits Of Categorization, Jean-Philippe Vergne, Gautam Swain Jan 2017

Categorical Anarchy In The U.K.? The British Media's Classification Of Bitcoin And The Limits Of Categorization, Jean-Philippe Vergne, Gautam Swain

Business Publications

Bitcoin is difficult to categorize, and indeed has been associated with 112 different labels in the British media (e.g., “private money”, “commodity”)—most of which poorly describe bitcoin. Specifically, our analyses of 674 media articles, focusing on the relationship between labeling and categorization, identify classification inconsistencies at three levels: within clusters of labels, between labels and categories, and between label attributes. These inconsistencies hamper categorization based on attribute similarity, audience goals, and causal models (respectively). We identify four factors that nurture this categorical anarchy and conclude with a call for research on the socioeconomic revolution heralded by blockchain technology.

Sources Of Firm Life-Cycle Dynamics: Size Vs. Age Effects, Lorenz Kueng, Mu-Jeung Yang, Bryan Hong Jan 2017

Sources Of Firm Life-Cycle Dynamics: Size Vs. Age Effects, Lorenz Kueng, Mu-Jeung Yang, Bryan Hong

Business Publications

What determines the life-cycle of businesses? Exploiting unique firm-level panel data on internal organization and innovation we establish three key sets of stylized facts to inform recent theories of firm life-cycles. First, life-cycle effects are driven by startups, not by new establishments of existing firms. Second, organizational restructuring and innovation are both strongly correlated with firm growth but not with firm age, in contrast to passive learning theories of firm dynamics. Third, there are important sectoral differences in innovation activities which are monotonically increasing in firm size for manufacturing firms but hump-shaped for firms in service industries.

Public Transit And Air Pollution, Nicholas Rivers, Soodeh Saberian, Brandon Schaufele Jan 2017

Public Transit And Air Pollution, Nicholas Rivers, Soodeh Saberian, Brandon Schaufele

Business Publications

Advocates of public transit frequently tout improved air quality as a primary benefit. Yet little is known about the causal impacts of public transit on local air pollution. Exploiting variation in transit availability resulting from work stoppages in 18 Canadian cities between 1974–2011, this study identifies the effect of public transit on air pollution. Our findings indicate that transit leads to a 3.5 part-per-billion increase in nitrogen oxides while having no statistically significant effect on carbon monoxide or PM2.5. Estimates are robust to a series of specification and placebo tests and magnitudes are consistent with a calibrated simulation model. Overall, …
