Accounting outsourcing may reduce misstatement risk, reducing the amount of audit effort necessary and thereby decrease audit lag. Alternatively, outsourcing may increase the amount of coordination necessary between the auditor, client management and the outside accounting service provider and thereby increase audit lag.

Aggregate Demand Shortfalls And Economic Freedom, Ryan Murphy, Taylor Smith

Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research

Political instability is often exacerbated in periods of aggregate demand shortfall. It has been conjectured that inadequate policy responses to recessions may be inimical to free economic institutions. This paper uses the Economic Freedom of the World index as its measure of economic institutions, and finds that the change in economic freedom in the following five, ten, and fifteen years is negatively impacted by an aggregate demand shortfall as measured by negative NGDP growth.

A Social Network Perspective On Envy In Organizations, Theresa M. Floyd, Christopher M. Sterling Jan 2017

A Social Network Perspective On Envy In Organizations, Theresa M. Floyd, Christopher M. Sterling

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

This chapter seeks to examine the development and consequences of envy using a social networks perspective. The social network perspective considers that individuals are embedded in a web of relationships which significantly influence individual behavior (Borgatti, Mehra, Brass, & Labianca, 2009). Much of the activity that takes place inside an organization occurs within a structure of informal relationships. These relationships, although informal, often represent key communication-based interactions that allow employees to do their jobs. People often compare their levels of performance and awards attained to those of their coworkers. They gather this social comparison information through direct inquiry and third-party …

Employees’ Responses To An Organizational Merger: Intraindividual Change In Organizational Identification, Attachment, And Turnover, W. Sung, M. Woehler, J. Fagan, Travis J. Grosser, Theresa M. Floyd, G. Labianca

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

The authors used pre-post merger data from 599 employees experiencing a major corporate merger to compare 3 conceptual models based on the logic of social identity theory (SIT) and exchange theory to explain employees’ merger responses. At issue is how perceived change in employees’ own jobs and roles (i.e., personal valence) and perceived change in their organization’s status and merger appropriateness (i.e., organizational valence) affect their changing organizational identification, attachment attitudes, and voluntary turnover. The first model suggests that organizational identification and organizational attachment develop independently and have distinct antecedents. The second model posits that organizational identification mediates the relationships …

The Rise Of Technology And Its Influence On Labor Market Outcomes, Maja K. Thomas Jan 2017

The Rise Of Technology And Its Influence On Labor Market Outcomes, Maja K. Thomas

Gettysburg Economic Review

Technological progress has significantly changed the inputs and production processes utilized by firms. Such shifts have led to warnings throughout the past few decades that substantial numbers of jobs, particularly things belonging to the middle class, would be eliminated and replaced by technology. This paper examines the validity of this argument by estimating the impact of technology investment on local labor markets during that period. I find evidence for a positive, rather than negative, relationship between technology and employment. Furthermore, my estimates suggest there exists a complementary relationship between technology investment and growth in labor opportunities, rather than a substitution …

The Effects Of Airline Behavior On Aircraft Accidents, Anneliese S. Brown Jan 2017

The Effects Of Airline Behavior On Aircraft Accidents, Anneliese S. Brown

Gettysburg Economic Review

The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of specific airline business decisions on aircraft accident propensity. Airline safety affects everyone and has large regulatory and policy implications. Existing research has focused largely on three areas: airline financial health, safety and the resulting effects of accidents. I use both Poisson and Negative Binomial models to study two different airline features: low-cost carriers and flight length, and how they relate to the probability of an aircraft accident. Based on results using a Generalized Negative Binomial model, I find statistically significant evidence at the 99% confidence level that a 1-unit …

Is The Dodd-Frank Act Destroying What Is Left Of U.S. Thrifts?, Scott Deacle Jan 2017

Is The Dodd-Frank Act Destroying What Is Left Of U.S. Thrifts?, Scott Deacle

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

I examine data from 1992 to 2015 to assess the Dodd-Frank Act’s impact on the performance of U.S. depository institutions, thrifts in particular. Ceteris paribus, the average FDIC-regulated institution experienced a decline in profitability as measured by pre-tax return on assets (ROA) following the Act’s passage, but the decline was concentrated among commercial banks. Small thrifts increased pre-tax profitability, after controlling for other factors including weak economic growth. Depository institution loan quality improved after Dodd-Frank, less so for small thrifts but more so for large thrifts. Efficiency ratios, which regulatory costs affect, increased, more for thrifts than banks.

The findings are of interest to pharmacy retail managers and marketers because they are instrumental in implementing a successful loyalty reward program.
