Institutions Of Higher Education: Self-Portrayal Vs. Student Experience, Rikita A. David
Honors Scholar Theses
This paper analyzes the marketed images of three nationally-recognized public universities, The University of Texas System, The University of California, and University of Connecticut; and compares these images to the student experience, based on allocation of funds. Public universities use various marketing tools to paint a desired picture of their institution. This paper investigates if the finances of the different institutions support the advertised claims. The following metrics will be used for comparison: funding for scholarships/student financial aid, amount of faculty and administrators, and bonuses and salaries for faculty and administration. Both overall budgets and allotment percentages will be explored.

Tuition Toss Up: An Economic Analysis Of Public And Private University Tuition And Fees, Alex Nannetti
Honors Projects
In a society where post-secondary education is a near necessity, examining the true cost of university is an important factor to consider when determining the benefits of higher education. While the long run career benefits of a bachelor’s degree are undeniable, the exponential rise in university tuition is a concern for many. This paper examines public and private universities ranked in U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges Ranking: National Universities Ranking and analyzes their fiscal and academic differences. Using economic analysis, the following attempts to determine if public or private universities are a better overall investment when considering the …
Hierarchy In The Medical Field, Rachel M. Eaton
Hierarchy In The Medical Field, Rachel M. Eaton
Honors Projects
Prior to volunteering in a southern United States hospital setting I had only my preconceptions of hierarchy in medicine, but this hospital had a different reality. At the hospital, I noticed a decreased sensitivity to the hierarchical structure of medical professionals in the hospital. I was able to learn that these professionals intermingled very well. As a volunteer on a floor, I could not even differentiate between the different professions, as they all wore similar uniforms and interacted with everyone on the floor. While participating in this volunteer program, I noticed how the health professionals at Arkansas Children’s Hospital used …

Perceived Organisational Injustice And Counterproductive Behaviour: The Mediating Role Of Work Alienation Evidence From The Egyptian Public Sector, Dr. Maha Ahmed Zaki Dajani, Dr. Mohamed Saad Mohamed
Business Administration
This study examines the relationship between the four dimensions of organisational justice, namely, distributive, procedural, interpersonal, and informational justice, and workers’ counterproductive behaviour, and whether work alienation has mediating effect in this relationship. These relationships were tested in a sample of 300 blue-collar workers operating in Egyptian public industrial context, only 236 responded positively. Results revealed that there are significant relationships between organisational injustice (in its four types) and counterproductive behaviours, and each of the work alienation dimensions partially mediated this relationship. These findings were discussed in the light of extant literature. Research limitations and implications for future research were …
The Free-Play Tax Deduction Debate: How Academic Research Can Help, Anthony F. Lucas, Katherine Spilde
The Free-Play Tax Deduction Debate: How Academic Research Can Help, Anthony F. Lucas, Katherine Spilde
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Free-play is the primary play incentive for slot players in many jurisdictions, with some campaigns eclipsing $50 million in annual redemptions. The efficacy of these incentives remains questionable at best, creating some contentious tax policy issues. Operators want to deduct the face value of these offers from taxable gaming win, based in part on the assumption that they expand the tax base; however, many regulators and taxing authorities question this claim. Any failure to fully recover redeemed free-play creates a deduction that is partially funded by tax payers. Arguments on both sides of this complex tax policy issue are thoroughly …
The Dynamics Of Gender Identity And Implicit Bias Impacting Women's Executive Leadership Development Programs And Female Executive Leadership Coaching, Emelina Belle
M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers
“The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” - Albert Einstein
The implicit gender bias and stereotypes in our society continue to impact gender diversity in executive leadership roles within organizations. The critical demand of high-potential talented female leaders to fill the gap in the corporate pipeline of senior executive positions continues to increase in our global world. Our technologically advanced society impacts this demand, the global climate of organizational change, the competition in products and services, and the impact of implicit bias and gender stereotypes influence …

The Role Of Trade And Renewables In The Nexus Of Economic Growth And Environmental Degradation: Revisiting The Environmental Kuznets Curve (Ekc), Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan
Undergraduate Research Awards
Based on the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, this study investigates whether there is a revised EKC relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions under the presence of renewable energy and trade for a panel of 35 countries whose trade openness index have remained higher than average global trade index over the period 1980-2012. By addressing similar trade characteristics rather than income levels, this paper applies a panel analysis with random effects and fixed effects to test EKC hypothesis. We use the principal component analysis to explain why CO2 emissions stands as a critical indicator of environmental quality. The results …

The Importance Of Profitability In Determining Volatility Across Industries With Different Debt Levels, Timothy De Silva
The Importance Of Profitability In Determining Volatility Across Industries With Different Debt Levels, Timothy De Silva
Undergraduate Economic Review
This paper seeks to investigate the relationship between debt and volatility. No consensus currently exists on the effects of financial leverage on stock volatility. With the increased use of complex financial derivatives in recent decades, the importance of understanding the factors that influence volatility has become extremely important. By looking at a cross-section of industries, this paper demonstrates how the importance of profitability for explaining volatility changes depending on industry debt levels, which are endogenous and depend on industry characteristics.
A Mixed-Methods Study: Self-Efficacy And Barriers To Participation In Workplace Wellness Programs, Massiel Perez-Calhoon
A Mixed-Methods Study: Self-Efficacy And Barriers To Participation In Workplace Wellness Programs, Massiel Perez-Calhoon
Dissertations
America needs a healthy workforce to sustain the country. The scourge of obesity continues to plague Americans despite government initiatives such as the Affordable Care Act and wellness programs in the workplace to combat this epidemic. However, despite initiatives to make America healthy, barriers continued to impede the nation’s health. Lack of awareness and sensitivity to what motivates individual participants versus group participants built formidable barriers to accessing all workplace employees equitably. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, the intent of this study was to explore the relationship between self-efficacy and the impact on participation and engagement when …

What Affects Perceived Job Stress? Influence Of Work Passion And Goal Orientation, Montana L. Drawbaugh
What Affects Perceived Job Stress? Influence Of Work Passion And Goal Orientation, Montana L. Drawbaugh
Senior Honors Theses
The dualistic model of passion theorizes that passion is multidimensional, consisting of both harmonious passion and obsessive passion. Similarly, theories regarding goal orientation assert that goal orientation is a multifaceted construct, consisting of a learning goal orientation, prove performance goal orientation, and avoid performance goal orientation. Specifically, this study aimed to determine if the combination of an employee’s work goal orientation and passion for work is predictive of the amount of job stress he or she perceives. Data from individuals (N=116) employed full-time were collected through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform. Only obsessive work passion was found to be …

Behavioral Finance And Its Impact On Investing, Jordan Fieger
Behavioral Finance And Its Impact On Investing, Jordan Fieger
Senior Honors Theses
The field of behavioral finance has seen incredible growth over the past half century as it has explored the effect that cognitive psychological biases can have on investors’ financial decisions. Behavioral finance stands in stark contrast to the efficient market hypothesis, as it attributes market inefficiencies to investors who are not perfectly rational human beings. It offers a solution to the observed 3.5% gap that active equity investors miss out on in the market compared to passive index funds, which it attributes to their emotions and psychological biases. These common human biases can be grouped into five major categories: heuristics, …

Microcredit As A Means Of Funding Entrepreneurship In Asia, Sheena Ragoo
Senior Honors Theses
Microcredit can be a powerful tool to aid impoverished individuals in Asia. Despite the increased globalization and interconnectedness around the world, many parts of Asia suffer from the social and economic problems. However, entrepreneurship programs can help alleviate some of the social ailments. Unfortunately, many individuals in the Asian region do not have the financial means to start their own businesses. Individuals may be able to fund their businesses by means of small loans. Microcredit not only empowers poor individuals, it also gives them the opportunity to be self-employed and become self-sufficient. Women are the main beneficiaries of microcredit financial …

Commodification Of Islamic Religious Tourism: From Spiritual To Touristic Experience, Jahanzeeb Qurashi
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the government and the local population of Mecca who used to facilitate pilgrims as ‘Guests of Allah’ free of charge have adopted the concept of ‘pay to pray’ (Shackley, 2001 & Woodward, 2004). In other words, given the escalating demand for religious tourism and the desire to achieve maximum economic benefits, the Saudi government is enhancing the hospitality, tourism and telecom sectors in general and transforming Mecca’s tourism infrastructure, in particular, developing it into a contemporary city / tourist destination by injecting US$80 billion into the local economy (Pecenoni et al., 2012).
