Book Review: The Dysfunctional Library: Challenges And Solutions To Workplace Relationships, Pat Hawthorne
Library Faculty Research
It is not easy to tackle the issues and address the impact of abnormal or unhealthy interpersonal behaviors and interactions in the workplace. Drawing from literature on dysfunctional organizational cultures and workplaces from the library, management, and organizational development disciplines, Jo Henry, Jo Eshleman, and Richard Moniz approach the subject of the dysfunctional library in a slim volume titled The Dysfunctional Library: Challenges and Solutions to Workplace Relationships.

'FL3TCH3R Exhibit'
JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 10, 2018) – “Basically, if news headlines were above-the-fold in the past year, there is a chance an artist submitted work for the ‘FL3TCH3R Exhibit’referencing those events,” says Randy Sanders, director of the Reece Museum at East Tennessee State University.
The sixth annual “FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social & Politically Engaged Art,” now open at the Reece Museum, features works in varied media that “explore current trends” and may “serve as an avenue or agent for societal transformation and exposure of social and political points of view,” the exhibit website says.

Moral Hazard And Adverse Selection In The Insurance Market, Kevin Willardsen
Moral Hazard And Adverse Selection In The Insurance Market, Kevin Willardsen
Applied Econometrics Workshops
Willardsen presented on his upcoming article with the same title. The abstract from this paper is as follows:
Understanding the relative significance of adverse selection and moral hazard is important in determining effective policy for insurance markets. Separate identification of these two effects, empirically, is difficult. To overcome this limitation, this paper uses experimental methods to examine how adverse selection and moral hazard separately affect agent performance in a real-effort task. In particular, we explore how agent behavior (effort in the task) changes across a baseline with no insurance option, a treatment where individuals can choose to purchase insurance, and …
The Market Impact Of The Appointment Of Female Directors In Listed Companies In New Zealand, Kuan Yong David Ding, Echo Su Chen
The Market Impact Of The Appointment Of Female Directors In Listed Companies In New Zealand, Kuan Yong David Ding, Echo Su Chen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examines investor reaction to the appointment of female directors in New Zealand-listed companies. Using the event study method, we ϐind that female directors tend to be appointed as independent directors rather than in a Chief Executive Ofϐicer (CEO) role. The results reveal that female board appointments are generally negatively associated with stock performance. This study captures both the gender diversity arising in New Zealand companies and the performance of stock price resulting from the reaction of investors to the different positions of female directors. The evidence of a decrease in market performance is shown by the negative cumulative …

Cardiology Guidelines
JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 9, 2018) – The work of an East Tennessee State University faculty member has resulted in changes to specific cardiology procedure guidelines.
Dr. Timir Paul, director of cardiovascular research and associate professor in ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine, helped create the new guidelines on myocardial revascularization – a procedure to open blocked heart arteries for patients with ischemic heart disease – after researching various outcomes of the intervention.
It has long been believed that the use of a specific device, known as an embolic protection device, during such cardiac procedures reduces complications. Through his research, …

A New Framework For Securing, Extracting And Analyzing Big Forensic Data, Hitesh Sachdev, Hayden Wimmer, Lei Chen, Carl Rebman
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Finding new methods to investigate criminal activities, behaviors, and responsibilities has always been a challenge for forensic research. Advances in big data, technology, and increased capabilities of smartphones has contributed to the demand for modern techniques of examination. Smartphones are ubiquitous, transformative, and have become a goldmine for forensics research. Given the right tools and research methods investigating agencies can help crack almost any illegal activity using smartphones. This paper focuses on conducting forensic analysis in exposing a terrorist or criminal network and introduces a new Big Forensic Data Framework model where different technologies of Hadoop and EnCase software are …

Economics 101: Tariffs And Trade—Part 2; Deficits, China And More, Rod Mabry, Manuel Reyes-Loya
Hibbs Brief
In our first Hibbs Brief on tariffs and trade, we noted that trade imbalances with a specific trading nation are the natural result of specialization. We wrote that one should not expect annual trading accounts in goods and services to balance between two given countries at the end of each year. There are deficits with some countries, surpluses with others—and different results by nation in different years. However, we expect general balance between our exports and imports across all accounts with all other countries combined, and that’s been our past history.

Despite significant increases in the growth of online education, a review of research reveals few studies of faculty perceptions of the use of technology in classrooms in higher education. Research can explore and illuminate how to bridge the gap between faculty perceptions and institutional goals and objectives for online programs. The study at hand presents the views of full-time and adjunct faculty across the colleges, both on- and off-campus, and the online community, at the University of La Verne, a private Tier II doctoral degree-granting institution located in Southern California.

As digital media continues to expand, competition between cable television and online streaming services increases. Acquiring customers today takes more than just advertising; it requires tailoring business objectives to the needs and wants of consumers. Numerous studies have examined the connection between the adoption of cable and online media, and key variables such as cost, ease of use, and social trends. In this study, we explore a number of factors which consumers consider when choosing cable television and online streaming options. Sample data was collected through a survey questionnaire at a large public university. Multivariate regression models were developed to …

Analysis Of Stock Price Movement Following Financial News Article Release, Robert P. Schumaker, Nick Maida
Communications of the IIMA
What effect does a financial news article have on stock price? To answer this question we investigate stock price movements within the minutes following financial news releases, broken down by media outlet, time of release and article sentiment. Our data shown a Sharpe ratio (a measure for calculating risk-adjusted return) of 1.18 versus a random dataset of ‑0.06, indicating significant price movement immediately following article release. Second, we found that articles released through WSJ, Reuters – UK Focus, NYT and FT all experienced significant positive returns, whereas articles in Barrons, MarketWatch, Forbes and Bloomberg experienced significant negative returns. Third, we …

What's Yours Is Mine: Trust In Collaborative Consumption, Kiku Jones, Lori N. K. Leonard
Communications of the IIMA
Consumers are expanding the types of goods they are exchanging in consumer-to-consumer e-commerce. There appears to be a subset called collaborative consumption. Collaborative consumption is a dynamic concept given that an individual must develop mechanisms to trust others with transporting, sharing, and consuming goods/services. This study develops a trust model for collaborative consumption with three expected influences -- natural propensity to trust (NPT), others’ trust of buyer/seller (OTBS), and objective trust (perceived website quality (PWSQ) and third party recognition (TPR)) -- on an individual’s trust in collaborative consumption. Regression analysis is utilized to assess the proposed model. The study finds …

Critical Success Factors For Adopting Telemedicine Applications, Arjen Maris, Anas Yousfi, Stefan V. Ramshorst, Pascal Ravesteyn
Communications of the IIMA
The use of IT within healthcare is increasing, but at a slow rate. In complex projects like the implementation of a telemedicine application within the context of physiotherapy processes where both practitioners and patients use the application, it is still unclear what factors should be taken into consideration for a successful adoption. Therefore, the research question for this study is: ‘what are the critical success factors for adopting a telemedicine application for primary physiotherapists and their patients within the Netherlands?’ A literature study is performed followed by a thematic analysis to determine the factors that are relevant for adoption of …

Introducing Competencies In Organizations, Henk Plessius, Anand Sheombar, Pascal Ravesteyn
Communications of the IIMA
In the fast-changing world of IT, relevant competencies are getting more important as these determine how successful you can function in practice. As a consequence, organizations are introducing competency frameworks like the European e-Competence Framework (e-CF, 2014) in their IT departments. However, for many organizations it is unclear what good practices and pitfalls are when introducing such a framework. In this paper this topic is studied by analysing 13 interviews with IT- and HR-managers who are (or recently have been) involved in a transition towards the use of competencies with their IT-staff.

MaineHealth Corporate
Improving engagement scores within MaineHealth Corporate has been a focus for a number of years. The most recent data has shown a marked improvement from 2014 to 2017, moving us to the 49th percentile, but the MaineHealth goal is to bring us to the 75th percentile so there is still work to be done. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement offers training in “Finding and Creating Joy at Work”, a framework for identifying “pebbles in your shoes” that detract from your joy at work, finding and addressing the underlying root causes. We would like to use that framework to find and …
