An Initial Key Evaluation Of The Strategic Interaction Between Macroeconomic Policies In Albania, Bernard Dosti, Elena Polo Oct 2018

An Initial Key Evaluation Of The Strategic Interaction Between Macroeconomic Policies In Albania, Bernard Dosti, Elena Polo

UBT International Conference

Monetary and fiscal policy constitutes principal macro-policies, even though they are usually designed and implemented with quite different - sometimes even contrary - goals. Although they have a certain degree of independence mostly in the institutional basis, there is also a considerable level of interdependence between them. This one is usually found in the literature with the term “interaction” and then “harmonization” when the country operates within a monetary union. The first objective of this paper is to shortly identify main elements of the interaction between macro-policies. The second objective is to evaluate this mutual interaction among them for the …

Globalization And The Flattening Of The World: A Book Review Of “The World Is Flat”, Shannon L. Wade

The Kabod

There is no doubt the world is changing. In cultures, in politics, and in economies, increased awareness of foreign and domestic practices has become a focal point of society. Trade has always proven beneficial to a nation due to the laws of absolute and comparative advantage, but in the modern world, international relations go beyond the boundaries of exchanging products. Now, services and collaboration are added to that realm. In his book “The World is Flat,” Thomas Friedman pinpoints the history and future of globalization in economics. Highlighting how globalization has made the world “flat” by allowing fair competition between …

From Bellas Hess To Wayfair: An Analysis Of Supreme Court Jurisprudence On The Physical Presence Rule, Alice E. Keane Oct 2018

From Bellas Hess To Wayfair: An Analysis Of Supreme Court Jurisprudence On The Physical Presence Rule, Alice E. Keane

The North American Accounting Studies

For 51 years, the physical presence rule has hampered states in collecting sales and use taxes from sellers with no property or personnel within state borders. The U.S. Supreme Court established this rule in 1967 in National Bellas Hess, Inc. v. Department of Revenue of the State of Illinois, based on the formalistic Due Process Clause and dormant Commerce Clause jurisprudence of that time, under which states had no authority to tax interstate commerce. However, in 1992, the Court upheld the physical presence rule under the dormant Commerce Clause in Quill Corporation v. North Dakota, notwithstanding dramatic changes in dormant …

Analyzing Small Industrial And Commercial User Demand For Electricity, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Allen R. Keighton Oct 2018

Analyzing Small Industrial And Commercial User Demand For Electricity, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Allen R. Keighton

Departmental Papers (E & F)

This study employs duality theory to develop a theoretical model for small commercial and industrial (CIS) electricity usage. The CIS production function is posited such that output is a function of three variable inputs (electricity, natural gas, and labor) and one fixed input (capital). A profit function dual to this production function is specified using a normalized quadratic functional form. CIS profits are functionally dependent upon output price, an electricity input price, and natural gas and labor input prices for a fixed quantity of capital. The derived input-demand equation results from differentiating the profit function with respect to the price …

Ceo Compensation After Harvester Director Departure, Victor Jarosiewicz Oct 2018

Ceo Compensation After Harvester Director Departure, Victor Jarosiewicz

Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles

I examine the effects of board member departures on CEO compensation using a sample of high growth IPO firms. Agency theory predicts that a reduction in board monitoring by harvester directors (VCs and private equity investors) will result in an increase in CEO pay. I find that departures of the last harvester director on a board result in an immediate and lasting increase in CEO equity compensation, while prior departures by other harvester directors are not significant. The results hold even when controlling for other governance mechanisms such as CEO wealth, CEO turnover, board composition, and external blockholder ownership.

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: October 24, 2018, Eric Thompson Oct 2018

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: October 24, 2018, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 fell by 0.35% during September of 2018. The decline in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, suggests that Nebraska economic growth will slow in the coming months. Initial claims for unemployment insurance rose in Nebraska during September, while building permits for single-family and airline passenger counts both declined. Business expectations were a bright spot for the Nebraska economy. Respondents to the September Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase both sales and employment at their businesses over the next six months. Manufacturing hours-worked …

Social Media Deployment In A Business To Business Environment: Theory And Practice., Loran Jarrett Oct 2018

Social Media Deployment In A Business To Business Environment: Theory And Practice., Loran Jarrett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social media is increasingly being used by business-to-business (B2B) firms to engage with their customers as they seek to maintain and grow their relationship with their customers. In my dissertation, I examine what communication objectives B2B firms seek to achieve via social media at different stages of the relationship cycle (exploration, expansion, maturity). I then use a panel of social media experts to evaluate the social media efforts of these firms to determine how well these firms achieve their social media objectives. I then contrast how the social media communication objectives of these firms at different stages of the relationship …

Are Gift Cards Really Liabilities? A Class Exercise Exploring Starbucks Corporation, David Gray, Brian Huels Oct 2018

Are Gift Cards Really Liabilities? A Class Exercise Exploring Starbucks Corporation, David Gray, Brian Huels

The North American Accounting Studies

Stored value cards represent an important and increasingly large portion of many retailers’ revenue streams. While the outstanding balances on such cards represent accounting liabilities, these cards provide a myriad of benefits to the issuing firms (e.g., an upfront collection of cash, increased customer loyalty, and the potential for breakage or non-redemption of the card value). To illustrate the accounting treatment and revenue recognition concepts of gift cards, this exercise uses actual data from an annual report of Starbucks Corporation. The exercise introduces students to the nature of gift cards, how cards may impact customer spending, and other managerial implications. …

Global Impacts of Industrial Farming Collection

Sustainably feeding the next generation is often described as one of the most pressing “grand challenges” facing the 21st century. Generally, scholars propose addressing this problem by increasing agricultural production, investing in technology to boost yields, changing diets, or reducing food waste. In this paper, we explore whether global food production is nutritionally balanced by comparing the diet that nutritionists recommend versus global agricultural production statistics. Results show that the global agricultural system currently overproduces grains, fats, and sugars while production of fruits and vegetables and protein is not sufficient to meet the nutritional needs of the current population. Correcting …

Forces Affecting The Success Of Business Working In Florida’S Economic Zones, Hugh Bettendorf

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research provides information about Economic Development Zones (EDZ) to help the reader understand these programs. For a business owner they are able to make informed decisions about the merits of these programs and decide whether it makes sense for them to relocate their businesses to Florida’s Economic Development Zones. What most readers do not know is that these programs and the operating condition of an Economic Development Zone can offer benefits to a business owner, allowing them to reduce their operating expenses and the cost of doing business.

Over the past several years, the researcher discussed foreign trade opportunities …
