Chapter 1: Credit Default Swaps Pricing Errors and Related Stock Returns

This article investigates the impacts of Credit Default Swaps (CDS) pricing errors on related stock returns. Using a parsimonious CDS valuation model, which produces an above average adjusted R2 of 90%, I find that its pricing errors significantly predict cross-section stock returns. Further investigation reveals that the cross-market return predictability channels via Merton (1974)'s structural prediction and primary dealers' capital risk. This paper provides a novel view of the complex interactions of capital markets and offers insights on the relative market efficiencies.

During the past four decades, the Archives of Appalachia has acquired a world-class repository of more than 800 collections, 84,000 sound recordings and nearly 8,000 moving images, making it one of the world’s leading regional archives.

Dr. Beth Anne Fox has been appointed Associate Dean of the Quillen College of Medicine and Chief of Staff for the Office of the Dean.  She was named to the current role by Interim Dean of Medicine Dr. William A. Block.

Entry Timing In Foreign Markets: A Meta-Analytic Review And Critique, Bernadine J. Dykes, Kalin Kolev

In this meta-analytic review, we examine the entry timing-firm performance relationship as it has been studied in international business research. In addition, we present several moderating factors that strengthen or weaken that relationship. We find that early entry bears financial advantages in international markets, but those advantages depend on country of entry and origin, industry context, performance measurement, type of entry and time period. We conclude with a discussion of avenues for future research.

In August 2010, thousands of people across the United States were poisoned by eating eggs unknowingly tainted with Salmonella enteritidis bacteria. Following a lengthy investigation, the owners of the facility where the outbreak began were sentenced to three months in prison. This is not a one-off case; poor food safety practices are responsible for several outbreaks and often end in incarceration. Filthy hen houses, diseased fruit storage, and negligent food processing may be the last thing we want to imagine, but these practices have much to teach today's food producers. This Article explores the connotation of the term “diversity” in the corporate governance sphere and the utility of such a connotation. To explore what the term has come to mean, this Article conducts a comparative analysis of how the term is used in the corporate governance context in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, India, and Malaysia. Based on this analysis, this Article argues that the push for “diversity” (in the way it has come to be understood) on company boards needs to be re-examined and recommends that the SEC needs to define the term in accordance with its policy goals.

Financial Intermediation Chains In An Otc Market, Ji Shen, Bin Wei, Hongjun Yan

This paper analyzes financial intermediation chains in a search model with an endogenous intermediary sector. We show that the chain length and price dispersion among interdealer trades are decreasing in search cost, search speed, and market size but increasing in investors' trading needs. Using data from the U.S. corporate bond market, we find evidence broadly consistent with these predictions. Moreover, as search speed approaches infinity, the search equilibrium does not always converge to the centralized-market equilibrium: prices and allocation converge, but the trading volume might not. Finally, we analyze the multiplicity and stability of the equilibrium.

The Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 (Pub.L. 110-81, 121 Stat. 735, enacted September 14, 2007) was passed by the U.S. Congress in order “to strengthen public disclosure requirements concerning lobbying activity and funding. It placed more restrictions on gifts for members of Congress and their staff, and provides for mandatory disclosure of earmarks in expenditure bills.” Treating this event as a natural experiment, we examine how this legislation affected the Cumulative Abnormal Returns (CARs) of firms that lobbied in the year(s) leading up to the passing of the legislation.
