At the same time, the products being advertised contain greater amounts of addictive ingredients, which encourage binge eating resulting in an unprecedented obesity epidemic. Combine this with the full-scale commercialization of the culture today“. Jhally identifies and the powerful impact of food advertisements becomes clear as does the need to evaluate these ads. As Kilbourne noted nearly a quarter of a century ago, the majority …

Community engagement is key to putting …

Essays On Investments, Michael Farrell Jan 2019

Essays On Investments, Michael Farrell

Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods

The first chapter studies mutual funds. I model intraquarter trading and use a genetic algorithm to estimate the trade pattern that is most consistent with the fund's daily reported returns. I validate the model empirically on a sample of institutional trades from Ancerno and I confirm that the method more accurately predicts daily holdings when compared to existing naive assumptions. Further, my method is substantially more accurate in classifying a fund's tendency to supply liquidity, and this increased precision has important implications for identifying superior performing funds. Specifically, a long-short strategy based on the model's liquidity provision measures earns significant …

The Aids Volcano : Narratives Of Hiv/Aids In The Iranian Public Sphere, Elham Pourtaher Jan 2019

The Aids Volcano : Narratives Of Hiv/Aids In The Iranian Public Sphere, Elham Pourtaher

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Broadly construed, this thesis will examine the transformations in the socio-cultural construction of HIV/AIDS in Iran from the joint perspectives of media and medical sociology. Until recently, official public narratives in Iran primarily regarded AIDS to be a drug-related disease. However, beginning from the early 2010s, a new narrative frame (often called as “the third wave”) introduces a significant “alarming” collective shift in the transmissions modes of the disease toward sexual pathways. Having observed the rather rapid transformation of the public AIDS framing, this research began with an empirical question: considering the fact that the shift implied the prevalence of …

The Role Of Affective Arousal In The Affective State-Performance Goal Level Relationship, Vahe Permzadian Jan 2019

The Role Of Affective Arousal In The Affective State-Performance Goal Level Relationship, Vahe Permzadian

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Given that employee performance goals are major determinants of work motivation and performance, examining the factors that influence goal setting has generated substantial research interest. However, despite decades of work, the relationship between affect and goal setting is not well understood as evidenced by inconsistent findings in this domain. Based on contemporary theory, affect is described along the two dimensions of valence (i.e., the level of pleasantness) and arousal (i.e., the level of activation). Most of the focus has been on the valence dimension of affect, where mood-as-information theory as well as affect-priming theory predict that affective valence influences judgments …

Assessing The Sustainability Of Collaborations Between Local Health Departments And Nonprofit Hospitals For Population Health, Christopher Mierow Maylahn Jan 2019

Assessing The Sustainability Of Collaborations Between Local Health Departments And Nonprofit Hospitals For Population Health, Christopher Mierow Maylahn

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In 2008, New York’s health commissioner asked LHDs and nonprofit hospitals to collaborate with community partners to conduct community health needs assessments, identify two or three health priorities to focus on, and implement evidence-based strategies to address them. The actions taken as part of the New York State Prevention Agenda mirrored the IRS rules and PHAB recommendations that followed. The dearth of published studies on public health-hospital collaborations and the momentum to understand how communities in New York have responded to the IRS rules and PHAB standards are the impetus for this research.

Strategic Management Of Open Innovation: A Dynamic Capabilities Perspective, Sohvi Heaton Jan 2019

Strategic Management Of Open Innovation: A Dynamic Capabilities Perspective, Sohvi Heaton

Management Faculty Works

Open innovation has become well established as a new imperative for organizing innovation. In line with the increased use in industry, it has also attracted a lot of attention in academia. However, understanding the full benefits and possible limits of open innovation still remains a challenge. We draw on strategic management theory to describe some of these benefits and limits. More specifically, we develop a dynamic capabilities framework as a way to better understand the strategic management of open innovation, which can then help to better explain both success and failure in open innovation. With this background, as guest editors …

Building The Board: Result Of The 2019 Hr@Moore Survey Of Chief Human Resource Officers, Patrick M. Wright, Donald J. Schepker, Anthony J. Nyberg, Kenneth R. Carrig, Spenser Essman

Reports

The 2019 HR@Moore Survey of Chief HR Officers examined a number of aspects of the Board of Directors (BOD). This report describes the results of this survey. We find that 64% of the companies surveyed have an independent Chair of the board with the other 36% having the CEO also hold the Chair title. CHROs do not evaluate boards as being particularly effective regarding the major tasks entailed in CEO succession. We found that responsibility for CEO succession is most often housed with the board chair/ lead director (rather than a committee), both as an ongoing process and as the …

The 2019 HR@Moore Survey of Chief HR Officers examined a number of aspects of executive leadership teams (ELTs), including team composition, the frequency with which CEOs meet with the whole team and individual members, team cohesion, and how the CHRO assesses problems that might exist within these teams. In terms of composition, our results showed that the average ELT size was 10.6 members, with 75% of ELT members being male, and only 16% of members from underrepresented groups. Just under half of CEOs tend to meet with the entire ELT on a weekly basis, with 25% meeting every two weeks …

Managing Mergers And Acquisitions: Perspectives From Human Resources, Brian Burgess, Stefan Wuorinen, Patrick M. Wright Jan 2019

Managing Mergers And Acquisitions: Perspectives From Human Resources, Brian Burgess, Stefan Wuorinen, Patrick M. Wright

Reports

Mergers & acquisitions (M&A) are common means for businesses to increase the scale and scope of their operations. However, research and practice suggest that a large percentage of acquisitions fail to meet their financial targets (Haleblian, Devers, McNamara, Carpenter, & Davison, 2009). While our understanding of when acquisitions are likely to succeed has improved, the lack of insider information has left researchers and practitioners with little insight into how to effectively navigate the most challenging processes in mergers – namely, assuaging potential human efficiency losses as members of the acquired firm lose the brand, leadership, policies, and practices that they …

In Search Of The Perfect Leader: Selecting The Next Ceo, Patrick M. Wright Jan 2019

In Search Of The Perfect Leader: Selecting The Next Ceo, Patrick M. Wright

Reports

Knowing how to choose new people for a company is a challenge that is never finished. Strategies for finding and choosing talent are as diverse as the pool of people available; and approaches to the task range from the primeval ‘gut instinct’, to a battery of personality, reasoning (verbal and numerical), and structured evaluations. When that ‘job’ is the role of CEO in, say, a major Fortune 500 company, the stakes are immense. A square peg in a round hole can quickly break a company; an inspired leader, on the other hand, can breathe new life into a drifting business …

The Chro And Culture: Results Of The 2019 Hr@Moore Survey Of Chief Hr Officers, Patrick M. Wright, Donald J. Schepker, Anthony J. Nyberg, Kenneth R. Carrig, Spenser Essman

Reports

Given the rash of scandals (Wells Fargo, Uber, etc.) that cast negative light on culture and the recent positive emphasis (e.g., Larry Fink’s letters to BlackRock shareholders), part of the 2019 HR@Moore Survey of examined CHRO perceptions of how the board of directors (BOD) and CEO view culture. This report presents these results. Quantitative results from the CHRO survey indicate that knowledge of culture and its impact on organizational outcomes is highest for CHROs, followed by CEOs and board members. All three groups recognize that culture has a strong impact on engaging and retaining employees, driving performance, branding the organization, …
