The rhetoric of then U.S. President‐elect Donald Trump and Philippines' President Rodrigo Duterte had triggered a shift in global political discourse (Greene, 2016). This study examines their responses on three similar crises: disrespectful remarks towards women, associations with controversial political figures, and remarks threatening geopolitical relations. Data from prestige publications, Washington Post (U.S.) and the Philippine Daily Inquirer, were analyzed during the acute stage of each crisis. Findings showed that both men employed confusing strategy combinations in their crisis responses. Despite incoherent application and contradictory strategies, they survived threats to their image as evidenced by poll results. New strategies (diversion …

Although personality is typically conceptualized in industrial, organizational, and vocational psychology as enduring and stable, an increasing volume of research now shows that personality changes throughout the lifespan, with work being a potentially important influence of trait development. This paper reviews and integrates the emergent literature in this area, and in doing so proposes a new Demands-Affordances TrAnsactional (DATA) model of personality development at work, against which research is evaluated. This DATA model clarifies how personality-related behavior at work is called upon by work demands at four different levels (vocation, job, group and organization) and proposes Person-Environment (PE) fit as …

In six studies (N = 2,340), we identified one source of people’s differential support for resettling refugees in their country—their beliefs about whether the kind of person someone is can be changed (i.e., a growth mind-set) or is fixed (i.e., a fixed mind-set). U.S. and UK citizens who believed that the kind of person someone is can be changed were more likely to support resettling refugees in their country (Studies 1 and 2). Study 3 identified a causal relationship between the type of mind-set people hold and their support for resettling refugees. Importantly, people with a growth mind-set were more …

Public Governance, Corporate Governance, And Firm Innovation: An Examination Of State-Owned Enterprises, Nan Jia, Kenneth G. Huang, Cyndi Man Zhang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine how corporate and public governance shape an important type moral hazard in innovation which is that agents pursuing the quantity of innovation at the expense of the novelty. We theorize that both better corporate governance tools that regulate agents (including better alignment of agents’ private incentives and stronger monitoring), and higher-quality public governance that regulates the principals of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) reduce this moral hazard. Furthermore, we argue that higher-quality political governance enhances the functioning of better corporate governance tools in further reducing this moral hazard in innovation, thus creating interdependence. We test our theory in the context …

Dominant Coalitions Directing Acquisitions: Different Decision Makers, Different Decisions, Cyndi Man Zhang, Henrich R. Greve
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Coalitions are important in organizational decision making, but the question of how coalitions are built and make decisions in response to firm performance is still not sufficiently explored. In this study, we develop and test theory on how potential coalitions are built through shared experience and recruitment of allies. When organizations respond to performance relative to aspiration levels, either as problemistic search following low performance or opportunity exploration following high performance, members form coalitions to influence decisions. We develop theory of coalition formation that builds on upper echelons theory and the theory of dominant coalitions to predict how past experience …

Proposed Reforms To Singapore Goods And Services Taxation In The Digital Economy, Hern Kuan Liu, Vincent Ooi
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
With the rapid development of the digital economy and the increasing importance of GST as a source of tax revenue, the Singapore Government has proposed several reforms to tighten the collection of tax revenue and tap its tax base more efficiently. The reforms focus on activating the currently dormant “reverse charge” mechanism to collect GST on supplies of services “imported” by businesses; creating an “overseas vendor registration regime” to catch digital products “imported” by individuals; and clarifying the “place of supply” requirement for supplies of digital products. This article considers the reforms from the perspective of a foreign business that …
Revised Scientific Review: Minimum Age For Swim Lessons, Stephen J. Langendorfer Ph.D.
Revised Scientific Review: Minimum Age For Swim Lessons, Stephen J. Langendorfer Ph.D.
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The question addressed in the original scientific review (2009) was rephrased as Does sufficient scientific evidence exist to support setting a minimum age for swimming lessons? for this triennial review. Addressing the research question is significant because strong differences of opinion about the appropriate age(s) for initiating learn-to-swim lessons have existed among the pediatric medical profession, aquatic professionals and agencies, and proprietary programs and swim schools for over four decades. The question has implications for the appropriate purposes, pedagogies, and outcomes associated with swimming experiences for infants and young children that will be addressed in a subsequent review. The revised …
De-Radicalization Of Fundamentalism Through The Thought Of Mohammed Arkoun, Muhammad Rezan, Naupal Asnawi
De-Radicalization Of Fundamentalism Through The Thought Of Mohammed Arkoun, Muhammad Rezan, Naupal Asnawi
International Review of Humanities Studies
Fundamentalism in religion has become an important issue in people's lives, especially in areas with high heterogeneity. The emergence of various cases of attacks against innocent people in the name of religion, has become an irony of its own, especially for religious believers. The irony arises when religion teaches peace in diversity, but there are many irregularities in its implementation. Various factors in the emergence of fundamentalism in religion do not necessarily become a reason for the lack of efforts to deradicalize this understanding. Mohammed Arkoun, through his various studies, has raised the significance of a re-understanding of religious texts …

Labeling And Customer Loyalty, Zheltauova Gulzira, Sang-Lin Han
Asia Marketing Journal
The purpose of this study was to analyze the brand loyalty formation by positive labeling. Affecting such factors as involvement, self-image, community engagement, preference, and choice cutback, positive labeling can be seen as one of psychological factors that shapes consumer’s behavior and their decision.
This study was carried out because little research was done to examine the influence of positive labeling toward brand loyalty, and also to find out the benefits that consumers can get from being labeled in positive terms.
Data were collected through survey questionnaire and 151 usable responses were used. Following a series of pretests and confirmatory …

The Synergy Effect Of A Corporate-Level Loyalty Program Integration On Customer Equity, Dae-Yun Park, Shijin Yoo
The Synergy Effect Of A Corporate-Level Loyalty Program Integration On Customer Equity, Dae-Yun Park, Shijin Yoo
Asia Marketing Journal
This study empirically examines the synergy effect of a corporate-level loyalty program on customer equity (CE) known as the lifetime value of current and future customers (Blattberg et al. 2009). A corporate-level loyalty program refers to a company-wide integration loyalty program at the corporate-level in which subsidiaries (multi-divisions) participate as program members. It does not merely examine whether there is an integration effect of a corporate-level loyalty program from the CE perspective, but it provides practical implications for a firm’s strategic focus by identifying which value creation channels (i.e., acquisition, retention, and cross-selling), brand characteristics (i.e., size of the customer …
You Want More When You Have Something In Your Hand, Hakkyun Kim, Youngjee Han, Eunmi Jeon
You Want More When You Have Something In Your Hand, Hakkyun Kim, Youngjee Han, Eunmi Jeon
Asia Marketing Journal
In this research, two studies show that the bodily experience of holding objects in the hand is tied to the mental concept of acquiring material wealth. Holding objects in the hand (a) increased people’s desires for possessing fairly luxurious goods (Study 1) and (b) made people judge a controversial issue (e.g., “sweatshops” run by global companies) more favorably based on wanting to generate more wealth for individuals and society rather than on humanitarian concerns (Study 2). These results provide evidence that the bodily experience not only helps to represent an abstract concept but also can shape attitude and judgment congruent …
Risk Factors For Boating Incidents In Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada, Catherine Tr Glass, Audrey R. Giles
Risk Factors For Boating Incidents In Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada, Catherine Tr Glass, Audrey R. Giles
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Injury prevention programs that focus on boating and water safety in the Northwest Territories (NWT) have existed for decades; however, rates of boating incidents are much higher in the NWT than southern Canada. To better understand this health disparity, we engaged in community-based participatory research informed by postcolonial feminist theory to examine Aboriginal men’s understandings of the risk factors that contribute to boating incidents in Inuvik, NWT. Participants identified four main risk factors for boating incidents in Inuvik: 1) Gender, 2) age, 3) place, and 4) lack of boating safety education. As a result of these findings and the ways …

Bowman’S Paradox: Prospect-Theory-Based Risk-Return Relationship (Some Recent Evidence In Indonesia), Rikko Sajjad Nuir, Marwan Asri
The Indonesian Capital Market Review
There is extensive evidence indicating a negative risk–return relation when a firm’s performance is measured based on accounting measures, such as its Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE). Previous studies show that the risk-return paradox can be explained by the prospect theory, which predicts that managers’ risk attitudes are different for firms with differing performance. This study will test whether there is a risk-return paradox in the context of Indonesian companies. This study uses ROA and its standard deviation to define return and risk. Industry level and market level median ROA are used as reference points. Three …

This paper presents some empirical test that on brokerage level analysis exhibit information paradigm in Indonesia which market makers and specialist are not available. We divide imbalances into groups of samples (all stocks and most liquid stocks), trader type (foreign or domestic) and size of brokerage firm (small to big). Our results show that order imbalances generally have a positive serial correlation for all the traders and brokers analyzed. However, we find that the …

The Profitability Of Momentum Strategies : A Study Of Indonesian Stock Exchange, Rakhmat Luthfiansyah Mosii, Sigit Sulistiyo Wibowo
The Indonesian Capital Market Review
We investigate the profitability of style and price momentum strategy in the Indonesian stock market from the year 2000 to 2015. We find the style momentum strategy yields significant positive returns while the price momentum strategy tends to produce negative returns. This result confirms the findings of Lewellen (2002) that style momentum returns are generally stronger than the conventional momentum. The average monthly returns of the double-sorted size-B/M style momentum are ranging from 1.98% to 2.64% and persistent after controlling for market factor using JSX index. Our findings suggest investors should utilize publicly available information such as size and book-to-market …

Domestic And Foreign Investor Dynamics In Indonesian Stock Exchange : Evidence From 10 Years High-Frequency Data, Abdurrahman Arroisi, Deddy Priatmojo Koesrindartoto
The Indonesian Capital Market Review
This study analyses price impact, herding behaviour, and feedback trading of domestic and foreign investors in Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) by employing vector autoregressive models using high-frequency transaction data in the period of 2008 – 2017. We find that domestic investors impact return negatively whereas foreign investors have no impact to return. In terms of herding behavior, domestic and foreign investors herd to themselves strongly. Domestic investors reverse-herd to foreign investors in the short-term (1 day) but no consistent pattern in the opposite direction. Regarding feedback trading, both domestic and foreign investors are contrarian in the big and medium cap …

Trading Frequency In Kse – 100 Index Using Pastor And Stambaugh Model, Farhan Ahmed, Mudassir Ali, Muhammad Raza, Muhammad Sibghat
The Indonesian Capital Market Review
The study aims to asses Pastor & Stambaugh model on Pakistan Stock Exchange (KSE-100 Index) from 2007 to 2017. Four commonly asset pricing factors are tested including market risk, size, value and liquidity premium. Except for the value premium, all factors are statistically found significant. Pertinent to mention that liquidity factor is initially found insignificant since annual returns are calculated. However, after taking most liquid sector during the period (Chemical Sector) the liquidity measure is derived through monthly returns. The result of the study is backed with Utility preference theory because it is observed that investors do prefer more liquid …

Regional Integration, Multinational Enterprise Strategy And The Impact Of Country‐Level Risk: The Case Of The Emu, Jenny Hillemann, Alain Verbeke, Won-Yong Oh
Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research
The European Monetary Union (EMU) provides a new macro‐level, institutional setting for multinational enterprises (MNEs). The authors investigate the impact of regional integration on MNE strategy by analysing Belgian firms’ entry‐mode choices in foreign markets, both EMU and non‐EMU ones, with a focus on what impact remains of country‐level risk. They demonstrate that regional integration has altered the impact of country‐level institutional risk on MNE entry‐mode choices inside the EMU. The conventional predictions of international business theory have been reversed, with higher country‐level risk inside the EMU driving a preference for wholly owned subsidiaries. Within the integrated region, insider firms …
