Representation Of Minorities Displayed On College Webpages, Jose Cruz Perez Apr 2019

Representation Of Minorities Displayed On College Webpages, Jose Cruz Perez

Undergraduate Research Conference

Advertisements play an important role in nearly everyone's life. Every single day people view a wide range of advertisements. With the population of America becoming more and more diverse in terms of race it would make sense that advertisements would reflect that same concept. However, it does not appear that advertisements actually reflect this idea. In the 2010 ads for the Super Bowl, only four out of the sixty-seven featured an African American in an ad. (Lapchick, 2010) Not only are minorities not being adequately represented in advertisements but they also only get featured for certain ads. African Americans find …

An Evaluation Of The Key Influencing Factors For Tramp Shipping Corporations Selecting Ship Management Companies, Ta-Yuan Lin, Cheng-Chi Chung, Tien-Chun Ho Apr 2019

An Evaluation Of The Key Influencing Factors For Tramp Shipping Corporations Selecting Ship Management Companies, Ta-Yuan Lin, Cheng-Chi Chung, Tien-Chun Ho

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The shipping industry is a global business and the number of privately-owned ships represents the strength of the shipping industry. However, global trades and the shipping business today are in poor economic shape. The more ships a company owns, the greater the burden on shipping operators. For the tramp shipping industry, using ship leasing, besides convenience, flexibility, time-saving, and tax benefits, commissioning a ship management company (SMC) to handle its non-core business can also result in greater financial liquidity providing the shipping companies with increased investment and purchasing power in other areas. This study is based on a consideration of …

Under-Reaction In The Sovereign Cds Market, Yaqing Xiao, Hongjun Yan, Jinfan Zhang Apr 2019

Under-Reaction In The Sovereign Cds Market, Yaqing Xiao, Hongjun Yan, Jinfan Zhang

College of Business Faculty and Staff Works

The sovereign CDS market has been growing rapidly in recent years, with a gross notional amount of around 2 trillion dollars in 2015. We document a strong momentum effect in this market. Its unique feature is that this momentum strategy returns are positively skewed and higher during recessions. Hence, this effect cannot be attributed to momentum crash risk or exposure to business cycles. Our evidence is consistent with the interpretation that the effect is due to investors’ initial underreaction to sovereign credit information followed by corrections, especially during public announcements of credit rating or outlook changes of the underlying countries.

The Impact Of State Fiscal Policy On States' Resilience Entering The Great Recession, Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde, Peter Prescott, Jennifer Rice Apr 2019

The Impact Of State Fiscal Policy On States' Resilience Entering The Great Recession, Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde, Peter Prescott, Jennifer Rice

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The U.S. economy entered the Great Recession in December 2007 and exited in June 2009. This national statistic obscures a wealth of state-level data shedding light on the policies and conditions that helped some states withstand that recessionary shock for a time. In this study, we used that state-level data in a parametric regression model, known as survival analysis, to estimate the effects that a state’s fiscal policy had on the timing of its entry into the Great Recession. Consistent with earlier, more general, studies focusing on economic growth, we found that taxes have the potential to hasten the start …

Loyalty Loses Ground To Market Freedom In The U.S. Supreme Court, Daniel Harris Apr 2019

Loyalty Loses Ground To Market Freedom In The U.S. Supreme Court, Daniel Harris

William & Mary Business Law Review

In the last decade, the U.S. Supreme Court has taken a much less moralistic and much more market-oriented approach to questions of fiduciary loyalty. In cases involving fiduciaries with conflicts of interest, the Court has shifted the burden of proof to the party claiming unfair treatment, thereby protecting deals and making loyalty harder to enforce. The Court has also struck down or narrowly construed laws designed to prevent disloyalty by fiduciaries on the theory that broad prohibitions on business conduct encroach on constitutionally protected freedoms.

This Article discusses how the Supreme Court’s new approach represents a departure from the Court’s …

Criminal Trade Secret Theft Cases Against Judgment Proof Defendants In Texas And California, Michelle Evans, Kurt M. Saunders Apr 2019

Criminal Trade Secret Theft Cases Against Judgment Proof Defendants In Texas And California, Michelle Evans, Kurt M. Saunders

William & Mary Business Law Review

Trade secret theft is a costly and ongoing risk to many businesses. As the two most populous states, California and Texas are home to numerous businesses that own trade secrets. Although civil remedies afford one source of relief when a trade secret has been stolen or disclosed, collecting on a judgment may be impossible due to the Homestead laws in both states, which effectively render the defendants judgment proof. In such cases, another alternative is to consider a criminal prosecution under the Federal Economic Espionage Act or state law. The same misconduct that results in civil liability can also violate …

Government Ownership Of Banks: A Curse Or A Blessing For The United States?, Yueh-Ping (Alex) Yang Apr 2019

Government Ownership Of Banks: A Curse Or A Blessing For The United States?, Yueh-Ping (Alex) Yang

William & Mary Business Law Review

During the Financial Crisis of 2007–2008, the Treasury injected an enormous amount of capital and held equity in 707 financial institutions to stabilize the U.S. financial system. The government’s large-scale ownership of banks alarmed the U.S. banking sector. The mainstream opinion in the United States strongly opposed this practice, mostly due to the distrust of the government and the fear that government intervention would jeopardize private shareholders’ interests. Later developments, including the Treasury’s quick exit from its holdings and the Dodd-Frank Act’s declaration of the end of bailouts, suggest that the U.S. government eventually succumbed to the mainstream opinion.

A Heuristic Algorithm For The Multi-Depot Vehicle Routing Problem With Outsider Carrier Selection, Ching-Wu Chu, Jiang-Ren Chang, Kai-Huei Chang Apr 2019

A Heuristic Algorithm For The Multi-Depot Vehicle Routing Problem With Outsider Carrier Selection, Ching-Wu Chu, Jiang-Ren Chang, Kai-Huei Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The delivery and pickup of goods from a depot to local customers is an important and practical problem of a logistics manager. In practice, professional logistics company owns more than one depot and the fleet is composed of different types of trucks. This situation is a multi-depot vehicle routing problem with delivery and pickup. When the everyday demand is known, the logistics manger is facing a deterministic multi-depot vehicle routing problem with simultaneously pickup and delivery. In reality, the demands fluctuate over time within a year. When the total demand is greater than the whole capacity of owned trucks, the …

Collaboration Enhances Utilization Of Production Factors In Container Shipping Industry, Rong-Her Chiu, Dong-Hua Wang Apr 2019

Collaboration Enhances Utilization Of Production Factors In Container Shipping Industry, Rong-Her Chiu, Dong-Hua Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study investigates both theoretically and empirically the economic impact of collaborative operation between container carriers. Using the property of superadditivity of the Leontief production function, this study aims to demonstrate that the utilization rate of production factors will improve when liner carriers collaboratively provide services through a strategic alliance. Two production factors, containership slot utilization (CSU) and container circulation velocity (CCV), are used to empirically prove the existence of the efficiency improvement effect after 2000 (since 2000, strategic alliances have become a formal collaborative mechanism and have been restructured continuously)
