Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

Group formation is an integral component of the contemporary higher education experience. This begs the question of how students form groups: which aspects are most important, and what determines people’s preferences for group members. Specific incidents have indicated that some students, particularly international students, are not sure if they will be welcome when asking to join a class group. In this study, undergraduate business students were surveyed to understand their preferences when selecting group members, using conjoint analysis to analyze the results. Overall, (i) results show that the most important factor for people’s preferences is if a potential group member …

Disruptive Innovation: The Rise Of The Knowledge-Sharing Market In China, Yaqing Lan Apr 2019

Disruptive Innovation: The Rise Of The Knowledge-Sharing Market In China, Yaqing Lan

International Studies Honors Projects

Innovation is a major subject of international political economy, but mainstream discussions focus on scientific research and development and detach innovation development from their social contexts. In response to this view, this project reveals the importance of cultural and social factors in influencing innovation development by examining the rise of the knowledge-sharing market (KSM) -- a social-network-site-based economy in China. It suggests the KSM is a disruptive innovation not only because it is pioneered by a latecomer in the global innovation market, China, but also because its emergence from the changing Chinese consumer demands disrupts the mainstream thinking of innovation.

Growth Need Strength (GNS) is a personality factor that strengthens this relationship. Design/Methodology/Approach: Empirical evidence for the research was derived from a survey that collected data from 221 female corporate officers in Vietnam, followed by a hierarchical regression. Research Findings: The results suggest that GNS significantly moderates the influence of off-the-job training on turnover intention. With higher levels of GNS, women who participate in more off-the-job training …

Exploring The Effect Of Waivers To The Non-Manufacturer Rule On Contract Awards To Small Businesses, William A. Muir, Michael J. Gravier, Timothy G. Hawkins

Marketing Department Faculty Conference Proceedings

The U.S. government regularly participates as a buyer in industrial markets where products are customarily sold through indirect marketing and distribution chains, separating buyers from manufacturers. In many cases, these marketing, distribution, and store-front activities add significant value for buyers, such as through pre- and post-sale service and support, improvements to product availability, and reductions in per-unit pricing (e.g., via economies due to warehousing, transportation, and ordering processes). Accordingly, the government (U.S. Small Business Administration) has, in some instances, issued class waivers to the requirements of the “non-manufacturer rule” (15 U.S.C. § 657s) when no small business manufacturers exist for …

The Effect Of Rating Dispersion On Purchase Of Experience Goods Based On The Korean Movie Box Office Data, Lian Chen, Kang Jun Choi, Jae Young Lee

Asia Marketing Journal

Online platforms often provide rating information to customers to relieve the uncertainty they encounter when purchasing experience goods. Prior research has focused mostly on the roles of rating volume and the valence of an average rating among the various possibilities. However, less frequently investigated is the effect of rating dispersion, which may be associated with uncertainty regarding how well a product fits a customer’s personal preference, on new trials of experience goods. In this study, we examine the effect of rating dispersion on new trials of experience goods and identify the conditions which intensify or reduce the effect. Empirical analyses …

This research aims to investigate which construction strategy, either inclusion or exclusion, is more likely to be adopted and how the adoption of a particular construction strategy can affect consideration set size while identifying the moderating role of chronic indecisiveness in the construction process. The findings of Study 1 indicate that individuals are more likely to adopt an inclusion strategy to reduce a consideration set to a more manageable size, and that an exclusion strategy results in a larger consideration set. In Study …

The Effects Of Variety And Visual Cue On Perceived Quantity And Consumer Attitude Toward Participation Into Sales Promotion Events, Changhyun Lee, Youngchan Kim

Asia Marketing Journal

Most studies on how people perceive a given quantity of items were conducted with visual cues exclusively and only offered spatial area based explanations, such as spatial estimation and perceptual grouping theories. This article establishes how people perceive a given quantity when only a written description is provided without any visual cues. Across two studies we show that variety decreases perceived quantity when a variety cue is given, while variety increases perceived quantity when a visual cue is not given. This is because people tend to rely heavily on spatial areas when a visual cue is present and because people …

Navigating The Grey Areas Within Financial Reporting: A Composition Of Case Studies, Annabelle Fortune Apr 2019

Navigating The Grey Areas Within Financial Reporting: A Composition Of Case Studies, Annabelle Fortune

Honors Theses

The following thesis consists of a composition of case studies that I wrote under the guidance of Dr. Victoria Dickinson. Over two semesters, Dr. Dickinson advised my peers and me to work through a dozen case studies covering a variety of financial accounting concepts. For most of the cases, we were presented with information and pertinent data about a company, then a series of questions for us to answer would follow. While many of the questions were objective in nature, some of the questions allowed us to be creative and provide our own recommendations to the problems presented. Aside from …

Social Identity And Regulatory Focus, Sangwoo Park, Dakyeong Heo, Dongwoo Shin Apr 2019

Social Identity And Regulatory Focus, Sangwoo Park, Dakyeong Heo, Dongwoo Shin

Asia Marketing Journal

To investigate the interplay between individual and collective self-regulations, the authors propose a dialectic process that describes the changes in the locus of self-regulations between individual self and collective self. The results from three studies display a strong support for the two sets of hypotheses drawn from the proposed process. Our findings demonstrate that consumers can move the locus of self-regulation from individual-self to collective-self when a social identity is activated (preliminary study and study1). Further examination of regulatory swing between individual and collective regulatory orientations revealed group identification as a key variable in determining the locus of self-regulation (study2). …

Architecture In Neoliberalism, Ben J. Kunz Apr 2019

Architecture In Neoliberalism, Ben J. Kunz

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

Neoliberalism, as a form of capitalism that redistributes wealth to existing accumulations of money, has reorganized our society around market relations resulting in extreme inequality. Architecture has been both captive and complicit in this process because it relies on the largess of its clients who benefit most from the process of neoliberalization. We must dissolve the dogma of architectural practice, and become free entrepreneurial operators in a neoliberal society with architecture as a core skill set, able to operate on risk and its dimensions of time, space, and money without the servitude to our risk ordered professional relationships in order …

Predictability Of Mid-To-Long Term Price Direction Following Price Shocks Unassociated With Regularly Scheduled Earnings Calls In Domestic Equity Markets, Noah Braden

Undergraduate Theses

This thesis examines the question of whether a company’s stock classification as either growth or value, as indicated by its trailing twelve-month price-to-equity (TTM P/E) ratio or price-to-tangible-book value (TTM PTBV) ratio, has an impact on the price retracement toward, or continued divergence from the previous fair market value of the stock subsequent to a market-moving event uncorrelated with a 10-K or 10-Q filing by the company of interest. The categorization of growth versus value is non-binary and dependent on each firm’s TTM P/E ratio and TTM PTBV ratio (in a secondary model), with a higher ratio in both cases …
