This month’s topic is evaluation with immigrant communities.
For years, immigration and immigrant communities have been at the center of a national and international conversation about nationhood, global dynamics, and human rights. Despite the enormity of this complex conversation, the below interview with Nelda Reyes, principal at AB Cultural Drivers, highlights the possibilities evaluators and researchers have working with these populations.
We hope that through reading this edition, our readers feel prepared to “be of service,” as Nelda puts it, when researching or evaluating with diverse and multi-dimensional immigrant communities.
Let the resources and insights we share in The Nonprofit …

Next Generation Of Evidence Collecting: The Need For Digital Forensics In Criminal Justice Education, Scott H. Belshaw
Next Generation Of Evidence Collecting: The Need For Digital Forensics In Criminal Justice Education, Scott H. Belshaw
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Digital forensics poses significant challenges to law enforcement as the information found in a computer system is often present at most crime scenes in the form of computer data and cell phones. Digital evidence contained on common devices, such as cell phones and laptops, includes information that can be pertinent to the investigation of crimes. Law enforcement is increasingly identifying the need to be able to process their evidence internally warranting the exploration of the need for digital forensics training as part of a broader study of criminal justice for future law enforcement practitioners. This paper uses telephone surveys of …

Car Hacking: Accessing And Exploiting The Can Bus Protocol, Bryson R. Payne
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
With the rapid adoption of internet-connected and driver-assist technologies, and the spread of semi-autonomous to self-driving cars on roads worldwide, cybersecurity for smart cars is a timely concern and one worth exploring both in the classroom and in the real world. Highly publicized hacks against production cars, and a relatively small number of crashes involving autonomous vehicles, have brought the issue of securing smart cars to the forefront as a matter of public and individual safety, and the cybersecurity of these “data centers on wheels” is of greater concern than ever.
However, up to this point there has been a …

A Design Case: Assessing The Functional Needs For A Multi-Faceted Cybersecurity Learning Space, Charles J. Lesko Jr.
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Following a multi-year effort that developed not only a detailed list of functional requirements but also the preliminary physical and logical design layouts, the concept for a multi-faceted cybersecurity center was approved and the physical, as well as, additional infrastructure space was subsequently allocated. This effort briefly describes the structure and scope of the current cybersecurity program being supported and then draws out the functional requirements that were identified for the center based on the needs of the institution’s cybersecurity program. It also highlights the physical and logical design specifications of the center, as well as, the many external program …

The Sensitivity Of Sector Stock Returns To Exchange Rate Risks In Nigeria, M. A. Adebiyi, M. O. Abeng
The Sensitivity Of Sector Stock Returns To Exchange Rate Risks In Nigeria, M. A. Adebiyi, M. O. Abeng
Economic and Financial Review
Exchange rate exposure has been identified in the literature as one of the standard metrics for measuring the performance of stock returns in both advanced and developing economies. This study adopts the capital market approach in investigating the effects of exchange rate exposure on stock returns in Nigeria, using monthly data spanning 2009 to 2018. The findings show that three sector stock returns, namely the NSE30, pension and banking indices, were significantly vulnerable to nominal effective exchange rate and bilateral exchange rates shocks. The non-significance of energy sector, proxied by the oil and gas, to exchange rate risk, is puzzling, …

The Central Bank Balance Sheet As A Tool For Monetary Policy: Evidence From Nigeria, E. U. Kure, O. O. Mbutor, U. A. Rotimi, Y. Adamu
Economic and Financial Review
The study examined the impact of the Central bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) balance sheet on the growth of private sector credit, economic growth and price stability during the period 2006-2017. Balance sheet indicators used were total assets of the CBN and proxy for asset distribution. Employing a vector autoregressive (VAR) model, the study found balance sheet policies to be effective in reducing cost of credit, increase in bank lending, economic activities and a decline in inflation. However, the effects favour asset dispersion (credit easing) against growth in assets (quantitative easing), implying that the Bank can, in the short- to medium-term, …
Estimation Of Fiscal Multipliers And Its Macroeconomic Impact: The Case Of Nigeria, D. J. Penzin, E. T. Adamgbe
Estimation Of Fiscal Multipliers And Its Macroeconomic Impact: The Case Of Nigeria, D. J. Penzin, E. T. Adamgbe
Economic and Financial Review
Fiscal multipliers are important tools for macroeconomic projections and policy design. However, very little is known about the size in developing countries, given the complexity of their estimation. The unavailability of reliable high frequency data and structural characteristics of these countries also make the estimation of fiscal multipliers difficult, in such countries. This paper estimated fiscal multipliers associated with government spending and tax-related revenue for Nigeria using quarterly data, spanning 1985: Q1 to 2015 Q4. The structural vector autoregression (SVAR) methodology suggested by Blanchard and Perotti (2002) was utilised in the model. The SVAR framework applied followed the approach by …

Current Account Balance And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, G. K. Sanni, A. U. Musa, Z. Sani
Economic and Financial Review
This study examined the relationship between current account balance and economic growth in Nigeria. Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds Testing methodology was employed to investigate the relationship, using annual data spanning from 1970 – 2016. The study found a long-run relationship between the current account balance, the real gross domestic product (GDP) growth and bilateral real exchange rate in Nigeria. The positive relationship between real GDP growth and the current account balance implies that increase in real GDP growth would lead to an improvement in the current account balance. However, the study found a negative relationship between real exchange …

Proactive newcomers are more successful in terms of integration and job satisfaction, than newcomers who are less proactive. However, it is unclear whether contextual factors, such as the leadership style experienced by newcomers, matter. To address this gap in the literature, we gathered data at three times from 247 new employees across their first six months after joining a company in France. Given that past research has found that newcomers play an active role in their own adjustment process, in the current study we investigate how newcomer proactive behaviors relate to the key outcomes of job satisfaction, person-job fit, and …

Below The Waterline: Developing A Transformational Learning Collaborative For Foundation Program Officers, Annie Martinie, Jaime Love, Michael Kelly, Kirsten Dueck, Sarah Strunk
The Foundation Review
Learning from fellow grantmakers is imperative in today’s ever-changing world. In late 2016, four health legacy foundations partnered to launch the Health Legacy Collaborative Learning Circle, creating an opportunity to understand not just the participating foundations’ visible investments and programs, but also the underlying behaviors, structures, and mindsets that ultimately explain why certain results were or were not achieved.
This article describes the yearlong process of creating the collaborative, and presents a new learning framework — based on the iceberg metaphor — that can be used to create learning environments that test and expand assumptions about promising approaches to common …

Social Customer Relationship Management In Rural Commerce: A Study Of Small Businesses In Southern West Virginia, Timothy John Anderson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The limited-resource context in which small businesses operate impedes the ability of the proprietors of small businesses in implementing customer relationship management. Despite the availability of a more cost-effective alternative in the form of social customer relationship management, there is a failure to utilize the practice because of a lack of knowledge of the use of social media platforms for the purposes of customer relationship management. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence that the use of social customer relationship management has on the small businesses located in Southern West Virginia. The study used a qualitative research …

Leader Behavior In Successfully Completing An Erp Implementation At An Army Installation, Roy T. Ray Jr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) has emerged as one of the breakthrough information technologies that can reshape business practices. The Army ERP systems are the central component of the Army’s business mission process. However, these ERP systems have yet to provide Army-wide, enterprise-level integration and resource visibility, which is needed to increase efficiency and effectiveness of Army operations and justify the cost of future ERP investment. Few companies complete their ERP implementation on time and within budget, and the incidences of underperformance and failure are incredibly high. Current research notes that the primary determinant of a successful ERP implementation is leadership. …

Skin In The Game? Experimental Reactions To Prospective Reputational Damage By Corporate Personnel, Jesus R. Jimenez-Andrade, Timothy J. Fogarty
Accounting Faculty Publications (Archived)
All organizations confront the possibility of scandal; however, the reputational threat caused by scandal is exacerbated when these events are not properly addressed. Since scandals also have the potential to adversely affect organizational personnel, dilemmas arise regarding traditional ideas of employee agency. In this study, we conduct an experiment manipulating the severity of the reputational threat and its financial consequences for decision-makers, using actual corporate officers and internal auditors. One key question is this: “Are corporate decision-makers’ responses to potential scandals affected by whether they, as incentivized individuals (via stock options), have “skin in the game?” Findings indicate that corporate …

Organizational Speed As A Dynamic Capability: Toward A Holistic Perspective, Bernadine J. Dykes, Margaret Hughes-Morgan, Kalin Kolev, Walter J. Ferrier
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Current research on organizational speed has been disjointed, which has left organizational speed as an underdeveloped area of study. In this essay, we expand the view of organizational speed as a multidimensional gestalt-like construct that may influence firm performance and competitive advantage. We offer a capability-based definition of organizational speed and identify and review the building blocks of organizational speed. We propose new avenues and questions for future research based on our perspective.

Introduction
A between-subjects experiment examines the effects of different warning types and modified risk e-cigarette ad claims on adolescent e-cigarette craving and future e-cigarette susceptibility for two different themes. One theme focuses on nicotine and addiction, and the other on the effects of potentially harmful constituents (eg, flavored chemicals and lung disease).
Methods
The effects of warning type (control, text-only, graphic health warning [GHW] and text) and modified risk e-cigarette ad claims (control, exposure reduction, risk reduction) are tested experimentally with two different arms (themes) for a sample of 1011 adolescents who had tried either e-cigarettes or cigarettes.

This research advances four propositions and a conceptual model of country and company characteristics influencing key International Business Decisions (IBDs). The IBDs in this study are country selection and evaluation, entry mode, segmentation-targeting-positioning, and the marketing mix – the first two in the international business domain, and the latter two in the international marketing field. The conceptual model and related four propositions are advanced, based on an extensive literature review and subsequent in-depth review of 169 published research papers on major IBDs and their determinants, namely, country characteristics, including opportunities, risks, and various distances between the host country and home …

Readability Of 10-K Reports And Stock Price Crash Risk, Chansog (Francis) Kim, Ke Wang, Liandong Zhang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This study shows that less readable 10‐K reports are associated with higher stock price crash risk. The results are consistent with the argument that managers can successfully hide adverse information by writing complex financial reports, which leads to stock price crashes when the hidden bad news accumulates and reaches a tipping point. Cross‐sectional analyses show that the effect of financial reporting complexity on crash risk is more pronounced for firms with persistent negative earnings news or transitory positive earnings news, greater chief executive officer stock option incentives, or lower litigation risk. Finally, accrual manipulation appears to be positively related to …

Policy Uncertainty And The Dual Role Of Corporate Political Strategies, Chansog Francis Kim, Incheol Kim, Christos Pantzalis, Jung Chul Park
Finance Faculty Publications
Firms use active political strategies not only to mitigate uncertainty emanating from legislative activity, but also to enhance their growth opportunities. We find that a firm's systematic risk (beta) can be hedged away by employing various political strategies involving the presence of former politicians on corporate boards of directors, contributions to political campaigns, and corporate lobbying activities. The hedging effect is greater when firms operate in more uncertain industries. In addition, active political strategies are associated with greater firm heterogeneity and make real options more value relevant as potential drivers of competitive advantages in uncertain environments.

Technology Directors And Firm Innovation, Yunhe Li, Yu Liu, Feixue Xie
Finance Faculty Publications
This study examines the influence of board directors with technological expertise on innovation using a panel of listed manufacturing firms in China from 2008 to 2017. The results show that technology directors positively affect firm innovation activities measured by R&D expenditure to sales ratio, invention patents applied for and granted, and utility model/design patents applied for and granted. The effect of technology directors on patents applied for and granted is weaker in firms with financial constraints and firms with CEO-chairman duality. Furthermore, independent technology directors show a stronger effect on invention patents granted than executive technology directors do.

The Profitability Of Converting Single-Family Residences Into Multi-Unit Rental Housing In San Luis Obispo, George L. Procida
Construction Management
This paper explains how a comparative case study was conducted to determine why some single-family homeowners in the San Luis Obispo area are converting their residences into multi-unit rental properties that can be rented out to several students rather than one family or couple. Through individual, semi-structured interviews, information was gathered on the homeowners' thoughts and experiences regarding the process and results of construction, the rental market as a whole, and the newly realized convenience or difficulties associated with the change in client base. It is important to note that one of the properties is divided into two sections. One …
