Discount, Coupon, Or Both? An Empirical Data-Based Analysis For Online Garment Retailers' Optimal Promotion Strategies, Yang Liu Jun 2019

Discount, Coupon, Or Both? An Empirical Data-Based Analysis For Online Garment Retailers' Optimal Promotion Strategies, Yang Liu

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

We investigate an online retailer’s optimal strategies for her promotion of the garments that are classified based on their price levels and life cycle stages. Accordingly we consider nine scenarios. For each scenario, the retailer implements a promotion strategy that involves only a discount, only a coupon, or both of them. We develop a three-stage approach, in which we first perform regression analysis to identify the significant variables, then obtain the optimal decisions, and .find the best scenario for the retailer. In general, the promotion with a discount depth is optimal for the garments at the introduction and decline stages, …

Was Television Responsible For A New Generation Of Smokers?, Michael Thomas Jun 2019

Was Television Responsible For A New Generation Of Smokers?, Michael Thomas

Marketing

Consumers’ response to mass media can be difficult to assess because individuals choose for themselves the amount of media they consume, and that choice may be correlated with their other consumption decisions. To avoid this selection problem, this article examines the introduction of television to the US, during which some cities gained access to television years before others. This natural experiment makes it possible to estimate the causal impact of television on the decision to start smoking, a consumer behavior with important public health implications. Difference-in-differences analyses of television’s introduction indicate that (1) television did cause people to start smoking, …

Port Performance From A Policy Perspective – A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Eamonn Oconnor, Natasha Evers Dr., Amaya Vega

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

Owing to their diverse functionality, seaports as entities produce a mix of private and public goods that have significant welfare implications for the regions they serve. In effect, performance in seaports can be viewed as multi-dimensional. When forming policy that affects multiple stakeholders it is therefore desirable to measure performance across all relevant dimensions, as they are likely to have differing effects on concerned stakeholders. The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review of published studies on seaport performance measurement to identify, critically evaluate and integrate the various dimensions of seaport performance measurement. A review of …

Big Tech Surveillance Could Damage Democracy, Chase Johnson Jun 2019

Big Tech Surveillance Could Damage Democracy, Chase Johnson

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2019

Data is often called the oil of the 21st century.

The more tech companies know about their users, the more effectively they can direct them to goods and services that they are likely to buy. The more companies know about their users, the more competitive they are in the market.

Custom-tailored capitalism is what has made Google, Facebook, Amazon and others the richest companies in the world. This profit incentive has turned big tech into a competitive field of mass intelligence gathering. The better and more comprehensive the data, the higher profits will be.

But this business model – what …

Collectivism And The Costs Of High Leverage, Sadok El Ghoul, Omrane Guedhami, Chuck C.Y. Kwok, Ying Zheng Jun 2019

Collectivism And The Costs Of High Leverage, Sadok El Ghoul, Omrane Guedhami, Chuck C.Y. Kwok, Ying Zheng

Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles

Prior literature shows that high leverage is associated with losses in market share due to unfavorable actions by customers and competitors. Building on this literature, we investigate the effect of collectivism on the product market performance of highly leveraged firms. Using a sample of 46 countries over the 1989–2016 period, we find significantly lower costs of high leverage for countries with higher collectivism scores. Moreover, we find that the impact of collectivism on high leverage costs is more pronounced for firms with high product specialization and with financially healthy rivals. In additional analysis, we find that collectivism helps highly leveraged …

Peering Inside The ‘Black Box’: The Impact Of Management-Side Representatives On The Industrial Relations Climate Of Organizations, Shelagh Campbell, Johanna Weststar

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

The labor climate of an organization can have a great impact on productivity and efficiency. Managing this climate is often left to union stewards and management-side labor relations representatives. While there is a large literature on the role of union stewards, little is written about the role that management-side labor relations representatives play in establishing or maintaining positive labor-management relations. Building from a series of interviews with labor relations representatives in Canada and a nationwide pilot study of frontline industrial relations workers, we model the role of the labor relations representatives and their specific job actions in the established model …

Nebraska Innovation Studio, extension helping communities transform libraries.

Back in 2012, Beatrice Public Library leaders and stakeholders had an eye toward the future as they drew up plans for a building renovation. Among the ideas was an area to house a makerspace.

“Some in the public hadn’t heard of this concept, so we ended up not having the full space,” library director Laureen Riedesel said. “We do have a 3-D printer and computers set up there, and our idea is to let it evolve and as people become aware of what we have, they’d ask for machines that we could …

Closing The Loop: The Capacities And Constraints Of Information And Communication Technologies For Development (Ict4d), Phillip Nicholas Turman-Bryant Jun 2019

Closing The Loop: The Capacities And Constraints Of Information And Communication Technologies For Development (Ict4d), Phillip Nicholas Turman-Bryant

Dissertations and Theses

As a mechanism for collecting and sharing information, information and communications technologies (ICT) hold immense potential for individuals and institutions in low- and middle-income countries. Currently the distribution and adoption of ICTs--particularly mobile devices--has far outpaced the provision of other household services like clean water, sanitation, hygiene, or energy services. At the same time, the development and deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices including cellular- and satellite-connected sensors is facilitating more rapid feedback from remote regions where basic services are most limited. When used in conjunction with economic development or public health interventions, these devices and the feedback they …

Uber’S Strategy Of Disruptive Innovation: The Implications Of Negative Press, Margaret M. Taylor Jun 2019

Uber’S Strategy Of Disruptive Innovation: The Implications Of Negative Press, Margaret M. Taylor

Honors Projects

In the last ten years of Uber’s existence the company has become a household name. Through their journey in becoming so well-known, they have had both positive and negative press that has affected how the world has seen them. While they have spent the last ten years revitalizing the taxi and limousine service industry, they have also consistently dealt with the changing perception of the public. Their fairly large number of scandals has not forfeited their industry leading position to Lyft, nor has it negatively affected their financial benefits. Uber’s radical disruptive innovation provided them with a clear sustainable advantage, …

Evaluating The Effect Of Corporate Tax Reductions On Value Chain Sourcing Decisions, James Mohs, Arthur Galloway

Accounting Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the changes in the elements of the value change sensitivity model and identify if there has been a significant shift in the profitability of one country to another. Validating the work on the adjusted present value (APV) formula provided by Rainish, Mensz, and Mohs (2015), this paper analyzes how the new U.S. corporate tax rates will impact a company’s sourcing decision. Also, the value-added tax (VAT) is used in all other OECD countries, except the U.S, and therefore this will be part of the evaluation. The third variable that has a crucial …

The author then developed questions and emailed all of the faculty and staff in the Agricultural Education and Communication Department along with a request for a headshot from each member. Females Serving As The Head Coach Of Competitive Elite Male Sports, Christian Hensley, Steve Chen

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

Recent coaching employment of Becky Hammon in the NBA inspires the discussion of the potential of witnessing the first female head coach hired in men’s professional basketball. This study investigates how women were perceived as head coaching candidates in a male dominant sport based on 132 student-athletes’ responses (70 males and 62 females). An exploratory factor analysis was performed to address four areas of responses: (1) participants’ belief in female coaches’ competency, (2) disadvantages and stereotypes faced by the females, (3) the traditional dominant thoughts, (4) preference toward female coaches, and (5) female coaches’ unique traits and strengths.
