Within-Person Job Performance Variability Over Short Timeframes: Theory, Empirical Research, And Practice, Reeshad S. Dalal, Balca Alaybek, Filip Lievens Jan 2020

Within-Person Job Performance Variability Over Short Timeframes: Theory, Empirical Research, And Practice, Reeshad S. Dalal, Balca Alaybek, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We begin by charting the evolution of the dominant perspective on job performance from one that viewed performance as static to one that viewed it as dynamic over long timeframes (e.g., months, years, decades) to one that views it as dynamic over not just long but also short timeframes (e.g., minutes, hours, days, weeks)—and that accordingly emphasizes the within-person level of analysis. The remainder of the article is devoted to the newer, short-timeframe research on within-person variability in job performance. We emphasize personality states and affective states as motivational antecedents. We provide accessible reviews of relevant theories and highlight the …

Political Ideology Of The Board And Ceo Dismissal Following Financial Misconduct, Uisung Park, Warren Boeker, David Gomulya Jan 2020

Political Ideology Of The Board And Ceo Dismissal Following Financial Misconduct, Uisung Park, Warren Boeker, David Gomulya

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Why do some boards refuse to take serious action against CEOs who have committed financial misconduct? Past work has directed attention to the antecedents of misconduct while largely overlooking this question. The relatively few studies to examine it have typically revolved around the capacity of boards to take action, or their relationships to their CEOs. This study instead examines how the beliefs and values held by board members can influence their actions following financial misconduct. Focusing on political ideology, we argue and find that politically conservative boards are more likely to respond by dismissing the CEO than are liberal boards. …

Optimization Of Non-Monetary Reward Provisions: Evidence From The Uk Banking Sector, Ese Okpebholo, Abdullah Zafar Sheikh Jan 2020

Optimization Of Non-Monetary Reward Provisions: Evidence From The Uk Banking Sector, Ese Okpebholo, Abdullah Zafar Sheikh

Business Review

This paper evaluates the current state of monetary and non-monetary rewards systems in place in the UK banking sector in an attempt to identify reasons for the preference of monetary rewards over non-monetary rewards. Data was collected from two banks, LLOYDS TSB and Royal Bank of Scotland. The selection of these two banks emanates from their recent bonus crises and the fact that they are both part nationalised, hence the need for a prudent reward system. Questionnaires were used to obtain data and the Evidence Based Reward Management (EBRM) methodology was used to highlight the effectiveness as well as the …

Fiscal Policy Transmission Mechanism In Pakistan: A General Equilibrium Analysis, Muhammad Raashid, Abdul Saboor, Shahzad Ahmad Jan 2020

Fiscal Policy Transmission Mechanism In Pakistan: A General Equilibrium Analysis, Muhammad Raashid, Abdul Saboor, Shahzad Ahmad

Business Review

This paper explores the impact of fiscal spending on key macroeconomic indicators for Pakistan economy using an estimated open economy new Keynesian dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model. Results show that a positive shock to government consumption leads to fall in private consumption, private investment and exports owing to negative wealth effect, rise in interest rate and domestic currency appreciation, respectively. Imports and inflation also rise. Estimated values of present value fiscal multipliers are 0.54, 0.29 and 0.18 after 1 year, 5 years and 10 years, respectively. These results show that although positive in the short run, yet the magnitude …

Project Management Maturity In Pakistan: An Empirical Investigation, Syed Ahsan Mustaqeem, Rameez Khalid, Syed Irfan Nabi

Business Review

This research assesses the current level of PMM in Pakistan, evaluates the gaps in the prevalent project management practices and formulates a framework to improve PMM level in Pakistan. 123 Pakistani organizations were assessed for their levels of PMM and project performance using standard project management maturity models. The average PMM level in Pakistan was found to be 2.32 (on the scale of 1 to 5) and only 24% of the projects carried out were found to be successful. This means that the prevalent project management practices are not yet fully institutionalized. Furthermore, project management training, use of project management …

General Emotional Labor Scale: Development And Establishing Psychometric Properties, Falak Zehra Mohsin, Nadia Ayub Jan 2020

General Emotional Labor Scale: Development And Establishing Psychometric Properties, Falak Zehra Mohsin, Nadia Ayub

Business Review

This study outlines the process followed in the development of the General Emotional Labor Scale-English (GELS-E). The scale construction process was divided into different phases. The first phase entailed the item generation and the second phase was the pilot study. Phase three and four dealt with developing the norms and establishing the psychometric properties (reliability and validity) of the final 30 items. It can be concluded that the GELS-E was developed as a measure that can be used by researchers to assess emotional labor in professionals. Such a measure of emotional labor can prove to be beneficial for researchers and …

Deciphering Brand Loyalty Through Brand Association And Emotional Confidence, Amber Gul Rashid, Wajid Hussain Rizvi, Huma Amir

Business Review

This paper investigates the influence of emotional confidence and brand association on brand loyalty and whether there is a statistically significant difference in the brand loyalty of consumers having low or high emotional confidence. Data was collected outside fast food restaurants across Karachi using systematic sampling. Every fourth person exiting the restaurant was approached to fill a questionnaire. The data was analyzed using structural equation modelling. The results suggest that both brand association and emotional confidence have a statistically significant influence on brand loyalty. The variance explained in brand loyalty was higher when emotional confidence was included in the model. …

What Is The Relationship Between Immigrant Enclaves And Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurial Activity In Ireland?, Osa–Godwin Osaghae

Doctoral

This thesis is a pioneering study, exploring the relationship between immigrant enclaves (IE) and transnational diaspora entrepreneurship (TDE) in the unique context of a Nigerian immigrant community in Dublin. The study reviews the relevant literature in the field of immigrant entrepreneurship, adopting principles from the most significant studies in order to develop a conceptual model for understanding the relationship between an IE and TDE. The study employed qualitative semi-structured interviews with eleven participants in order to generate data, which was then processed through the six phases of thematic analysis described by Braun and Clarke. The researcher’s own experience as a …

How Can Higher Education Institutions Utilise Community Engagement To Support The Learning Of Enterprising Behaviour In Disadvantaged Communities?, Emma O'Brien Jan 2020

How Can Higher Education Institutions Utilise Community Engagement To Support The Learning Of Enterprising Behaviour In Disadvantaged Communities?, Emma O'Brien

Doctoral

It is broadly agreed that entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in economic and societal development. Supporting entrepreneurship has become a global phenomenon, and governments and policy makers have paid increasing attention to it. Yet, despite such policy developments, the OCED (2019) has identified that several communities (including women, youth, seniors, unemployed and immigrants) remain disadvantaged and under-represented in entrepreneurial activity. Inclusive entrepreneurship policies recognise the significant economic and social contribution these communities could make if greater encouragement and appropriate support was offered. This study investigates the supportive role that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can play in strengthening social inclusion through …

The Relationships Among External Environments, Organizational Structures, And Performance In Pursuit Of The Clinical And Academic Missions At Academic Health Centers, Eric J. Strucko

Theses and Dissertations

Clinical and academic missions place Academic Health Centers (AHCs) at the center of the American health care system, and the future viability of these institutions requires successful performance in competitive environments. AHCs are organizations involving hospitals, physician group practices, and medical schools, and treat patients with complex conditions, conduct bio-medical and health science research, and educate future physicians and health professionals. AHCs account for 20% or $540 billion of national health care expenditures, conduct over 80% of all heart, liver, and lung transplants, utilize over $27 billion in annual sponsored research funding, and graduate approximately 17,300 medical doctors annually. Financial …

Why We Use A New Currency: The Role Of Trust And Control In Explaining The Perception And Usage Of Bitcoin, Joseph B. Walton Jan 2020

Why We Use A New Currency: The Role Of Trust And Control In Explaining The Perception And Usage Of Bitcoin, Joseph B. Walton

Theses and Dissertations

Social media, e-commerce, global peer-to-peer technologies, and the near ubiquity of computers and smartphones allow people to interact, trust, and exchange value across traditional socio-economic control boundaries and over significant distances. Since the creation in 2008 of a new cryptographic currency system called Bitcoin, a financial technology market sector of about 250 billion USD has rapidly emerged, raising questions about the nature of currency in society and whether new types of non-national money are warranted and viable. This debate has pitted heterodox economic interests against orthodox economic interests while it has rekindled interest in theories that view money as a …

Knowledge And Skill Predictors Of Voice Behavior: Voice As An Upward Influence, Zitong Sheng Jan 2020

Knowledge And Skill Predictors Of Voice Behavior: Voice As An Upward Influence, Zitong Sheng

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing body of research focused on improving our understanding of employee voice behavior. Yet this literature focuses mainly on factors that influence employees’ decisions regarding whether to speak up (i.e., quantity of voice behavior), rather than factors that influence whether voice behavior turns out to be effective. As a result, job attitudes and personality characteristics have been identified as the major personal factors predicting voice behavior. The current study contributes to the voice literature by viewing voice from an upward influence angle, examining the influences of the quality of content and …

An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Central Bank Sterilization On Capital Inflows In Nigeria, Tijjani M. Jume Jan 2020

An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Central Bank Sterilization On Capital Inflows In Nigeria, Tijjani M. Jume

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper assesses the monetary policy response of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to increases in capital inflows into Nigeria using monthly time series data from January 2009 to December 2017. It presents an econometric assessment of the degree to which the CBN sterilizes net foreign assets (NFA) in response to the capital flows, using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds testing approach. The long run sterilization coefficient obtained suggests that the CBN successfully offset 95per cent of capital inflows in the period of analysis. Against the background of rising financial instability in Nigeria, the study illustrates how sterilization has …

Decomposing Employment Growth In Selected Sub-Saharan African Countries: The Roles Of Structural Changes And Demographic Transition, Abidemi C. Adegboye, Clement A.U. Ighodaro Jan 2020

Decomposing Employment Growth In Selected Sub-Saharan African Countries: The Roles Of Structural Changes And Demographic Transition, Abidemi C. Adegboye, Clement A.U. Ighodaro

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The challenge of employment growth in SSA countries goes beyond economic growth prospects to include structural and demographic dimensions. This study examines the relative contributions of structural changes and demographic factors to employment growth for a set of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries using available annual data from 1970 to 2014. A decomposition approach is employed in the study using the Jobs Generation and Growth (JoGGs) method which generates results that show distributive components of employment, productivity and output changes over time in a system whereby the roles of economic structure and demographic changes could be observed. The study shows that …

Pass-Through Of Crude-Oil Price Shocks To Consumer Prices In Nigeria: Pre And Post 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Eric I. Otoakhia Jan 2020

Pass-Through Of Crude-Oil Price Shocks To Consumer Prices In Nigeria: Pre And Post 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Eric I. Otoakhia

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study investigates the responses of consumer price index (CPI) to crude oil price shocks in the pre- and post-2008 global financial crisis. The study used the Structural Vector Autoregressive model to analyze monthly data from 2000M01 to 2019M12. The impulse response analysis showed that for pre and post-crisis periods, oil price shocks have a positive impact on CPI. This impact was an insignificant direct momentary increase in pre-crisis CPI before dissipating. Conversely, the impact on post crisis CPI response tends to be stable and long-lasting starting from the third month. The confidence bands for the post crisis CPI are …

Asymmetric Impact Of Oil Price On Inflation In Nigeria, Sani Bawa, Ismaila S. Abdullahi, Danladi S. Tukur, Sani I. Barda, Yusuf J. Adams Jan 2020

Asymmetric Impact Of Oil Price On Inflation In Nigeria, Sani Bawa, Ismaila S. Abdullahi, Danladi S. Tukur, Sani I. Barda, Yusuf J. Adams

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study examines the impact of oil price shocks on inflation in Nigeria. A Non-Linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) approach was applied on quarterly data spanning 1999Q1 to 2018Q4. Results showed that oil price increases led to increase in headline, core and food measures of inflation in Nigeria. However, a decline in oil price resulted in a decline in the marginal cost of production and culminated in moderation of domestic inflation. Furthermore, negative oil price shocks led to higher inflation in Nigeria when exchange rate is dropped from the models, indicating that exchange rate absorbed the impact of oil price …

Markov Regime-Switching Autoregressive Model Of Stock Market Returns In Nigeria, Oluwasegun A. Adejumo, Seno Albert, Omorogbe J. Asemota Jan 2020

Markov Regime-Switching Autoregressive Model Of Stock Market Returns In Nigeria, Oluwasegun A. Adejumo, Seno Albert, Omorogbe J. Asemota

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study is designed to model and forecast Nigeria’s stock market using the All Share Index (ASI) as a proxy. By employing the Markov regime-switching autoregressive (MS-AR) model with data from April 2005 to September 2019, the study analyzes the stock market volatility in three distinct regimes (accumulation or distribution – regime 1; big-move – regime 2; and excess or panic phases – regime 3) of the bull and bear periods. Six MS-AR candidate models are estimated and based on the minimum AIC value, MS(3)-AR(2) is returned as the optimal model among the six candidate models. The MS(3)-AR(2) analysis provides …

Impact Of Interest Rate Differential And Exchange Rate Movement On The Dynamics Of Nigeria’S International Private Capital Flows, Tari M. Karimo Jan 2020

Impact Of Interest Rate Differential And Exchange Rate Movement On The Dynamics Of Nigeria’S International Private Capital Flows, Tari M. Karimo

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The study examines the impact of interest rate differential and exchange rate movement on the dynamics of Nigeria’s international private capital flows from 2010Q1 to 2019Q4. It uses the interest rate parity theory and the Markov Switching Time Varying Transition Probability Modelling approach. Findings show that interest rate differential does not explain the dynamics of aggregate capital and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows, but significantly explains Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) flows. Also, Movement in real exchange rate is significant in explaining outflows and inflows in FPI, and inflows in FDI, but neutral to aggregate capital flows. The study concludes that …

Currency Substitution And Exchange Rate Volatility In Nigeria: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag Approach, Isaiah O. Ajibola, Sylvanus U. Udoette, Rabia A. Muhammad, John O. Anigwe Jan 2020

Currency Substitution And Exchange Rate Volatility In Nigeria: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag Approach, Isaiah O. Ajibola, Sylvanus U. Udoette, Rabia A. Muhammad, John O. Anigwe

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study investigates the relationship between exchange rate volatility and currency substitution in Nigeria, using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. After accounting for the presence of structural breaks, evidence from the findings shows that domestic interest rate and expected changes in exchange rate are important determinants of currency substitution. In addition, there is empirical support for a positive relationship between exchange rate volatility and currency substitution both in the short- and long-run. This implies that higher real exchange rate volatility is associated with an increased level of currency substitution. In view of these findings, the paper calls for sustained efforts …

Business Analytics/Business Intelligence And It Infrastructure : Impact On Organizational Agility, Xiaofeng Chen, Keng Siau Jan 2020

Business Analytics/Business Intelligence And It Infrastructure : Impact On Organizational Agility, Xiaofeng Chen, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This is an empirical research investigating the impact of business analytics (BA) and business intelligence (BI) use, IT infrastructure flexibility, and their interactions on organizational agility. Synthesizing the systems theory and awareness-motivation-capability framework, the authors propose that BA-Use, IT infrastructure flexibility, and their interactions significantly influence organizational agility. The results show the significant association of BA use and IT infrastructure flexibility with organizational agility. The results also suggest that BA use may demand corporations to build a more flexible IT infrastructure. However, the data does not reveal the proposed interaction between the two drivers of organizational agility.

Debt Covenant Condition And The Relative Use Of Operating Lease And Long-Term Debt, Daniel Gyung Paik, Brandon Byunghwan Lee, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith, Sung Wook Yoon Jan 2020

Debt Covenant Condition And The Relative Use Of Operating Lease And Long-Term Debt, Daniel Gyung Paik, Brandon Byunghwan Lee, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith, Sung Wook Yoon

Accounting Faculty Publications

Purpose: We investigate the relationship between off-balance-sheet (OBS) operating leases and long-term debt by analyzing firms’ debt risk profiles measured by the constraints on firms in the financial ratios in their debt covenants.

Design/methodology/approach: We determine debt risk profiles using three measures: the ex- ante probability of covenant violation (Demerjian and Owens, 2016), firms in violation of debt covenants, and firms close to covenant violations.

Findings: High-risk firms according to all three measures, on average, have a significantly lower level of operating leases, indicating that these firms use OBS leases as a substitute for long-term debt. More interesting, for firms …

Re-Thinking Risk Management Of Auction House Guarantees And Third-Party Irrevocable Bids, Nathan Krasnick Jan 2020

Re-Thinking Risk Management Of Auction House Guarantees And Third-Party Irrevocable Bids, Nathan Krasnick

MA Theses

This paper addresses the question of how deviations between expected and actual art auction results impact the auction guarantees made within an artist’s market and among multiple artists, and whether those impacts can be identified and quantified. To do so, I use a theoretical pricing model based on datasets of historical auction records going back to the earliest available date for a specific artist but no further than 2010. I find that, in comparing the model’s expected and actual results to empirical price deviations at auction, we can identify and quantify the impact of those deviations on guarantees.

The Old Masters Market And The Salvator Mundi: What Did It Do, What Can Be Done?, Mary Sullivan Jan 2020

The Old Masters Market And The Salvator Mundi: What Did It Do, What Can Be Done?, Mary Sullivan

MA Theses

On 3 November 2017, within the Post-War & Contemporary Evening Sale at Christie's auction in New York, nestled between a Vija Celmins and Jean-Michel Basquiat, was a painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, the Salvator Mundi (1490-1500.) The work quadrupled the estimated sale price of 100 million USD, hammering at 400 million (for a total of 450.3 million with buyer’s premium.) This work, setting the record for the most expensive work of art ever sold, at auction or private, creates a curious case for the Old Masters category. What appears to be a shrinking, potentially dwindling category of art, now …

Female Transnational Entrepreneurs (Ftes): A Case Study Of Korean American Female Entrepreneurs In Silicon Valley, June Y. Lee, Jane Lee Jan 2020

Female Transnational Entrepreneurs (Ftes): A Case Study Of Korean American Female Entrepreneurs In Silicon Valley, June Y. Lee, Jane Lee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Increasingly, studies of entrepreneurship and migration have examined the role of immigrant entrepreneurs in revitalising and diversifying the economy of the host society. Further, recent transnational skilled entrepreneurs have been understood as being much more mobile in building international networks and collaborations between their home and host societies. These studies have tended to focus on the technically oriented entrepreneurs and to produce a single grand narrative about a particular migrant group that transfers knowledge and becomes a technical pioneer in their home society. This article scrutinises a group of first-generation Korean American female transnational entrepreneurs (FTEs) living in Silicon Valley …

Sale-Leaseback Transactions: Price Premiums And Market Efficiency, C. F. Sirmans, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2020

Sale-Leaseback Transactions: Price Premiums And Market Efficiency, C. F. Sirmans, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

Sale-leaseback transactions are ubiquitous in real estate markets in the United States with annual volume estimated to be greater than $7 billion. However, there is no evidence concerning the price impact of such transactional arrangements. Using a data set of sale-leaseback transactions, this study examines the price impact on commercial property transactions across seven markets. The findings reveal that transactions structured as saleleasebacks occur at significantly higher prices than market transactions. In addition, after accounting for income differentials, buyers and sellers are appropriately pricing the transactions resulting in no undue advantage to either party, that is, the expected price premium …

Sizing Up Corporate Restructuring In The Covid Crisis, Robin Greenwood, Benjamin Iverson, David Thesmar Jan 2020

Sizing Up Corporate Restructuring In The Covid Crisis, Robin Greenwood, Benjamin Iverson, David Thesmar

Faculty Publications

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the financial and legal system will need to deal with a surge of financial distress in the business sector. Some firms will be able to survive, while others will face bankruptcy and thus need to be liquidated or reorganized. Many surviving firms will need to be downsized or acquired. In normal times, this triage is supported by the court system, banks, and financial markets. The goal of this paper is to size up the coming surge of financial distress, list the challenges it presents in the current environment, and analyze potential policy solutions. …
