A Comparative Study Of Machine Learning Approaches For Human Activity Recognition, Loknath Ambati, Omar El-Gayar

SDSU Data Science Symposium

The goal of this project is to study the performance of Machine Learning (ML) techniques used in Human Activity Recognition (HAR). Specifically, we aim to 1) evaluate and benchmark the performance of various ML techniques used for HAR against established ML performance metrics using multiple datasets, and 2) map the characteristics of various HAR datasets to appropriate ML techniques. From a theoretical perspective, the research will shed light into the strengths and weaknesses of various ML techniques that can provide insights into future research aimed at improving these techniques for HAR. From a practical perspective, the research provides guidance into …

The Ongoing Battle Of Cultures Between Pixar And Disney Animation Studio: How Business Culture Affected The Success Of Both Studios, Christina Gudaitis Feb 2020

The Ongoing Battle Of Cultures Between Pixar And Disney Animation Studio: How Business Culture Affected The Success Of Both Studios, Christina Gudaitis

Augsburg Honors Review

This report analyzes the reception of both Disney Animation studio's and Pixar studio's last ten animated films, those released from 2003-2013, through a study of their Rotten Tomatoes scores as phases of varied success (a fllm with a score above 50%) and failure (a film with a score below 50%). Through examining this data, I determine the reasoning behind Disney Animation studio's recent series of blockbuster hits (a film with a score between 80% and 100%) and Pixar's recent duds (films receiving scores between 39% and 78%). This report provides a more accurate analysis of the studios' performance as it …

Competing With The Sharing Economy: Understanding The Barriers Faced By “Traditional” Providers, Amiee Mellon, Jim Connell Feb 2020

Competing With The Sharing Economy: Understanding The Barriers Faced By “Traditional” Providers, Amiee Mellon, Jim Connell

AMTP Proceedings 2020

Consumer participation has made the sharing economy an economic wonder, creating valid competition for traditional service providers. Using the self-determination theory, we examine why both consumers and peer-providers engage in the sharing economy. Three areas of consumer-focused marketing where traditional providers can increase efforts to decrease erosion are app abilities; niche markets; and consumer-desired amenities. Two areas of employee-focused marketing where traditional providers can increase efforts to decrease erosion are flexible hours and environments and employee appreciation and rewards.

The Brand Axis: Strategic Impacts Of Loyalty And Engagement Within The Social Media Magnet Theory, Kyle A. Huggins, J. Elliott Cunningham Feb 2020

The Brand Axis: Strategic Impacts Of Loyalty And Engagement Within The Social Media Magnet Theory, Kyle A. Huggins, J. Elliott Cunningham

AMTP Proceedings 2020

The Social Media Magnet is presented as a new pedagogy for organic, inbound marketing instruction. This methodology has now been deployed for the last four years across multiple universities combining a digital online delivery system with a new theory and a live online practicum to teach college students both strategic and tactical planning for inbound marketing campaigns. Using live website creation, social media planning tools, and email retention campaigns, students using this pedagogy learn the best practices for inbound marketing. This is not a simulation, but a live practicum that teaches students real-time inbound marketing principles. This paper recaps the …

2020-February-11-New Year New Name, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 11, 2020) – The East Tennessee State University Center for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment, established in 2016, began 2020 with a new name: the ETSU Addiction Science Center (ASC).

The change is part of a concerted effort to keep pace with the evolving nature of the opioid crisis, whereby heroin and fentanyl are now the leading cause of unintentional overdose death in the U.S. – not prescribed pain medications.

In addition, the new name provides an opportunity to expand research efforts to include the study of co-morbid health conditions and poly-substance misuse, incorporating studies focused …

A Foundational Investigation Of The Theory Of Brand Comfort, Kirk D. Aiken, Ajay Sukhdial, Matthew Meuter Feb 2020

A Foundational Investigation Of The Theory Of Brand Comfort, Kirk D. Aiken, Ajay Sukhdial, Matthew Meuter

AMTP Proceedings 2020

Two nationwide Internet studies investigated the novel concepts of comfort foods and comfort brands. After examining qualitative and quantitative measures, results showed that consumers were desirous of an important and expansive notion of brand comfort, defined here as: (1) the alleviation of physical and emotional stresses through brand consumption; combined with (2) the emergence of positive emotions of warmth, happiness, and love derived from brand associations often initiated by nostalgic memories of a romanticized past. Brand comfort stems from issues of physical comfort (i.e., how a certain brand fits, feels, smells, and tastes), combined with both cognitive components (driven …

Early-Career Professional Athletes, Social Media Marketing, And Sponsorship, Nichada Satasuk, Gallayanee Yaoyuneyong

AMTP Proceedings 2020

The sports marketing industry has changed in the new era of easy internet access and ubiquitous mobile devices. Sports marketers are beginning to use social media platforms, such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram, to promote their brands and to connect with fans. In addition, legislative trends and announcements by the NFL and NCAA show that individual athletes, early in their professional careers (at the college level), will be able to profit from their names, images, and likenesses. While research into social media marketing by sports brands is existent and growing, most studies are concerned with the strategies and impacts …

Peregrinatio: Anever-Ending Pilgrimage To An Unspecified End, Bernice Lamb-Senechal Feb 2020

Peregrinatio: Anever-Ending Pilgrimage To An Unspecified End, Bernice Lamb-Senechal

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

To most modern-day thinkers a pilgrimage entails a journey to a sacred place. Thus, the primary purpose of the voyage is to reach a locale that holds special meaning for the pilgrim. Typically, the end destination is a place where a significant familial, historical or religious event has occurred. In contrast to this contemporary understanding of pilgrimage, some Irish Christian monks of late antiquity undertook sacred journeys of an indefinite duration with no express terminus in mind. Furthermore, these monastic sojourners exiled themselves from their homeland vowing never to return to kith and kin. This working paper explores the practice …

Resurrection Of A Heretic Religion Through Pilgrimage: The Cathar Case Study, Pierre Fournie Feb 2020

Resurrection Of A Heretic Religion Through Pilgrimage: The Cathar Case Study, Pierre Fournie

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Six hundred ninety-eight years have passed since Guilhem Bélibaste, the last known Perfect or Albigensian was burned at stake in Villerouge-Termenès. His execution, in 1321, ended the official presence of the Cathars – who preferred to call themselves Good-Men and Good-Women- in the South of France. The Catholic Church, feeling that the influence of this alleged heretic movement threatened its power, started procedures around 1147 to at first control the Cathars peacefully, but failing to do so, later felt it had to destroy them, by means of crusades and the Inquisition.

For many people, the intangible and tangible remains of …

Pilgrimaging Through Time: The Theoretical Implications Of Continuing Journeys On The Shikoku Henro, John Shultz Feb 2020

Pilgrimaging Through Time: The Theoretical Implications Of Continuing Journeys On The Shikoku Henro, John Shultz

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Fantastic growth in the field of pilgrimage studies raises real questions about whether our theories and methods are up to the task of describing increasingly diverse phenomena. Herein, I maintain that the future of the field lies not with articulating some vague generalisations in an attempt to somehow maintain universals, but to consciously ponder the variability found with respect to pilgrimage. I argue that pilgrimage analysis needs to be more ground-up with a methodological focus on how key variables shape the fundamental meaning of pilgrimage. I demonstrate such methods by looking at the relativity of time in the context of …

The Processes, Effects And Therapeutics Of Pilgrimage Walking The St. Olav Way, Nanna Natalia Jørgensen, John Eade, Tor-Johan Ekeland, Catherine A.N. Lorentzen Feb 2020

The Processes, Effects And Therapeutics Of Pilgrimage Walking The St. Olav Way, Nanna Natalia Jørgensen, John Eade, Tor-Johan Ekeland, Catherine A.N. Lorentzen

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Pilgrimage walking is increasingly sought as self-therapy for different mental, physical and spiritual ailments, sudden life changes, crossroads or challenges. However, pilgrimage walking as therapy is largely an unexplored ground within health science / care / interventions notwithstanding millennia of human experience. To unfold the nature and add to the knowledge about pilgrimage walking as therapy, this article explores the health-related processes (as experienced mentally, physically, spiritually, socially and in nature), the after-effects (on daily life, behaviour and future actions) and the therapeutic mechanisms (that bring forth these processes and effects) involved in walking the St. Olav Way across Norway. …

Perspectives On Pilgrimage To Folk Deities, Rajshree Dhali Feb 2020

Perspectives On Pilgrimage To Folk Deities, Rajshree Dhali

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The title ‘Perspectives on Pilgrimage to folk deities’ has been chosen to underline the pattern of the alternative religious spaces and their transformation over the centuries which is not yet explored much. The evolution and shaping of folk cults, associated religious processes, and their incorporation into high ritual Hinduism forms a very dynamic part of the cultural and the religious history of India. My paper explores the pilgrimage to Ramdevra in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, India, where the main shrine of the folk deity Ramdev is located. He is a popular folk deity of the erstwhile untouchable communities and …

Negotiating With The Sacred Other: The Ancient Mechanisms Of The Personal Vow Practice, Mirela Hrovatin Feb 2020

Negotiating With The Sacred Other: The Ancient Mechanisms Of The Personal Vow Practice, Mirela Hrovatin

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

By questioning the anthropological definition of vows as instrumental prayers, which has been generally accepted since William Christian (1989) introduced it, the paper will discuss the notion of a vow as a personal prayer in the effort to expand it beyond the mere request for a miracle or fulfilment of a pilgrim’s or believer’s wish. The votive prayer is mentioned already in the Bible (Deut. 23) as a somewhat problematic way of communicating with God due to a promise it contains. Based on the Amir Mashiach’s (2014) interpretation of prayers as performative utterances in the Jewish tradition and Radoslav Katičić's …

Place And Space In Walking Pilgrimage, Ken Wilson Feb 2020

Place And Space In Walking Pilgrimage, Ken Wilson

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

What kind of experience of territory is produced by walking pilgrimages? Do they generate experiences of place or space as with the definitions provided by Yi-Fu Tuan in Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience? This paper addresses these questions by considering Tuan’s distinction between space and place and various attempts at deconstructing that binary opposition. It looks at three texts about walking that seem to turn space into place--Nan Shepherd’s The Living Mountain, Thelma Poirier’s Rock Creek, and Iain Sinclair’s London Orbital: A Walk Around the M25--before considering the author's own failure to turn space into place during an …

Digital Liability Risk: A Note On Estimating Exposure, Costs, And Implications, Robyn L. Raschke, Michael T. Lee, Kimberly F. Charron, Paulette R. Tandy Feb 2020

Digital Liability Risk: A Note On Estimating Exposure, Costs, And Implications, Robyn L. Raschke, Michael T. Lee, Kimberly F. Charron, Paulette R. Tandy

Department of Accounting Faculty Research

Digital liabilities are the unknown future costs that occur after an event related to digital assets threatens organizational value. These events emerge from: (1) an IT data breach or cybersecurity failure; (2) IT infrastructure limitations that limit future opportunities; and (3) changes in business models that are limited due to IT infrastructure. Potential digital liabilities are not fully understood and can be difficult to quantify. Derived from prior research, this research note proposes four methods, modified from existing research literature, for estimating the cost of digital liabilities prior to a digital asset compromise. We conclude the research note by discussing …

Virtual Water Flows Embodied In International And Interprovincial Trade Of Yellow River Basin: A Multiregional Input-Output Analysis, Guilian Tian, Xiaosheng Han, Chen Zhang, Jiaojiao Li, Jinjing Liu

Information Systems and Analytics Department Faculty Journal Articles

With the imminent need of regional environmental protection and sustainable economic development, the concept of virtual water is widely used to solve the problem of regional water shortage. In this paper, nine provinces, namely Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), are taken as the research objects. Through the analysis of input-output tables of 30 provinces in China in 2012, the characteristics of virtual water trade in this region are estimated by using a multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model. The results show that: (1) The YRB had a net inflow of …
