An Empirical Analysis On Major League Soccer Player Earnings, Aaron Michael Anderson Iehl

Honors Program Theses

Application of economic and statistical techniques to the sports world has been on the rise for some time. The major sports in the United States (football, basketball, baseball, and hockey) have been thoroughly studied. This paper applies a statistical technique used by Lucifora and Simmons (2003) on an Italian professional soccer league to examine determinants of professional soccer player wages and assess the overall value added. Determinants Of Long-Term Care Insurance: Are Spouses Substitutes?, Jacob Harold-Matthew Haag

Honors Program Theses

As the U.S. population continues to age due to medical advancements and the aging of the largest generation in the history of the U.S. (baby boomers), the number of people in long-term care facilities has increased significantly; however, the percentage of people with long-term care insurance is small. Research conducted in the early 2000s focused on factors such as availability of children, risk aversion, health status, age, having Medicaid, and other variables that describe personal attributes to explain why the market is so small. This paper will use recent data from the Health and Retirement Study to determine whether or …

Startups And Investors And Trolls, Oh My!: How Commercialization Patents Can Benefit Startup Innovation, Robert Chou May 2020

Startups And Investors And Trolls, Oh My!: How Commercialization Patents Can Benefit Startup Innovation, Robert Chou

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Venture-backed startups play a crucial role in innovation and advancing our technology. However, the development of secondary markets for patents and the proliferation of patent assertion entities starting in the early twenty-first century has made the patent ecosystem a difficult environment for startups to navigate. Startups face challenges that their more established counterparts do not. First, startups must rely heavily on external sources of funding and, as a result, many decide to file for patents early in their lifecycle to signal their value to potential investors. Second, patent assertion entities threaten startups with patent infringement suits at a disproportionately high …

Shattering The Glass: Will Gen Z Bring Us Closer To Gender Equality In Us Hospitality Leadership?, Denise Holly Ramirez Molintas May 2020

Shattering The Glass: Will Gen Z Bring Us Closer To Gender Equality In Us Hospitality Leadership?, Denise Holly Ramirez Molintas

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The continued underrepresentation of women in senior leadership positions has impaired the hospitality industry’s capacity to achieve the fifth UN Sustainable Development Goal of Gender Equality. Although the industry has initiated programs to establish gender parity, the innate gendering through traditional leadership prototypes and gender-role stratification requires investigation. Scholars have noted the limited focus on gender-aware issues in hospitality research. Further, as gender is a socialized construct, historical shifts in gender ideologies have enabled changes in gendering at the individual, interactional, and institutional dimensions of society. Grounded in gender as a social structure theory and role congruity theory, this dissertation …

An Examination Of The Financial Sensitivity Of The Defense Industry To Spending Strategies Of The United States Government, Ryan Carr May 2020

An Examination Of The Financial Sensitivity Of The Defense Industry To Spending Strategies Of The United States Government, Ryan Carr

Business/Business Administration

Knowledge of the relationship between the financial performance of firms within the U.S. defense industry and the defense spending decisions by the United States Government is an important domain of research. Greater understanding can enable investors, communities, and employees to make more informed decisions about investments and/or career choices. In this work, I examined the financial statements of five major American defense contractors from 1993-1995, 2003-2005, and 2011-2013. Financial performance of these firms was then correlated with spending actions by the United States Defense Department. Although the financial sensitivity of these firms on spending decisions by the United States Defense …

The Economics Of On-Farm Rice Drying In Arkansas, Clayton Parker May 2020

The Economics Of On-Farm Rice Drying In Arkansas, Clayton Parker

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses

Globally, rice producers are faced with the temporal problem of deciding the optimal time to being rice harvest. When harvested, paddy rice is typically at a moisture content (HMC) between 15 and 22%. Upon delivery, the rice is subsequently dried by the mill to a moisture content (MC) of 12.5%. Riceland Foods Inc., the largest miller of rice in the world, uses a stair-step pricing model to charge farmers to dry in price/unit as the MC of grain decreases from a range of +22% to 13.5%. This study estimates an alternative linear relationship in the stair-step model to determine MC …

A Comparative Analysis Of Marketing Strategies For The Willamette Valley Wine Region And Hunter Valley Wine Region, Anna Self

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Boutique wineries located anywhere in the world struggle to compete with large wineries that can take advantage of economies of scale and produce wines at a low cost that is not feasible for boutique wineries. Because the smaller wineries cannot compete using a price advantage, they must prioritize other elements of their business and find a marketing strategy that cannot be used by large wineries. Although the Willamette Valley wine region and the Hunter Valley wine region are located on different continents, they emphasize the same strategy of personal connection with their customers and producing consistent high-quality wines to compete …

Muscling My Way To My Positive Future: Physical Exertion Of Strength And Preference For Risk, Eunice Kim Cho, Hee-Kyung Ahn Apr 2020

Muscling My Way To My Positive Future: Physical Exertion Of Strength And Preference For Risk, Eunice Kim Cho, Hee-Kyung Ahn

Asia Marketing Journal

Building on the growing literature on how physical bodily expressions influence psychological processes, the authors propose that exerting physical strength decreases risk perceptions and increases preference for risky options by increasing perceptions of control or agency. The present research is based on the belief of “no pain, no gain”, that when an individual exerts physical strength and effort, he believes he can be the agent in bringing about the desired outcome. Because of this automatic association between exerting physical strength and the sense of being in control of the outcome, the authors hypothesize that even in situations where the outcome …

The 2008, 2012, And 2016 Summer Olympics: A Test Market Efficiency, Joshua Hutchinson

Longwood Senior Theses

Corporate sponsorship is a form of advertising in which companies commit and pay to be associated with certain events. Corporate sponsorships of an event, such as the Olympic Games, may feel the need to evaluate the returns on their investment. In order to evaluate these investments, and how they pay off, an event study has been completed. The risk-adjusted event study methodology was used to test the hypothesis that risk-adjusted return of the sponsor companies stock prices are significantly positively affected by the type of information. The event study tested the effect of the 2008 Beijing, 2012 London and 2016 …

Happiness From What We Have And What We Experience: Attribute Non-Alignability Increases Anticipated Satisfaction From Experiential Purchases, Minhee Kim, Hee-Kyung Ahn Apr 2020

Happiness From What We Have And What We Experience: Attribute Non-Alignability Increases Anticipated Satisfaction From Experiential Purchases, Minhee Kim, Hee-Kyung Ahn

Asia Marketing Journal

This research examines how processing type and alignability moderate the effect of product type on satisfaction (i.e., happiness). It is well known that there are two types of processing―deliberative and intuitive processing. Based on the previous literature that the intuitive processing is compatible with experiential purchases and the deliberative processing is fit with material purchase, the current research demonstrates that processing type moderates the effect of product type on happiness. Moreover, we hypothesize that alignability moderates the effect of product type on anticipated satisfaction. As expected, participants in the intuitive processing condition reported greater happiness from their experiential purchases than …

The Detrimental Effect Of Customer Demotion On Customer Profitability In Hierarchical Loyalty Programs, Woojung Chang

Asia Marketing Journal

Firms employing hierarchical loyalty programs (HLPs) periodically demote customers from higher to lower status level to divest from unprofitable customers and boost profitability. However, existing literature lacks objective evidence on how customer demotion affects demoted customers’ future purchase behaviors and ultimately profitability for the firm. Moreover, customers in the HLP’s higher position may respond to customer demotion differently from those in the HLP’s lower position. Drawing upon emotions and equity theories, this study quantifies how the profits that customers contribute to the firm change after customer demotion, and compares demoted customers’ behavioral reactions from top-tier with those from bottom-tier based …
