Two Essays On The Microstructure Of The Housing Market: Agents' Diffused Effort And Sellers' Behavior Bias, Zhaohui Li

For the first essay, we generalize the classic Williams [1998 RFS] brokerage model by introducing the diffused effort. That is, the agent can cross-utilize effort spending on one listing to another one. Besides, the agent can manage heterogeneous housing assets. One counterintuitive finding in Williams’ paper is the absence of the agency problem. As a special case in our model, we recover the agency problem. We examine the positive externality due to the diffused effort and show that it depends on the agent’s inventory size. Hence there exists a trade-off between agents’ effort spending on existing listings and on finding …

Scholarly studies have focused on the impact of managerial characteristics on various corporate activities. Following this stream of literature, this dissertation empirically examines the potential effects of three major Chief Executive Officer (CEO) characteristics, i.e., CEO ability, CEO risk taking behavior induced by compensation structure, and CEO overconfidence on corporate bankruptcies. Essay 1 examines whether chief executive officers (CEOs) are to be blamed for corporate failure. Using alternative measures of CEO ability, we document that high-ability CEOs are less likely to be associated bankruptcy. Bankruptcy-related high-ability CEOs manage to salvage their post-bankruptcy careers either with the reorganized firms or with …

The Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) in partnership with the University of New Orleans’ (UNO) Political Science Department undertook a study to gain insights on the impact the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is having on nonprofit organizations located in Southeast Louisiana and to share this information as a resource to philanthropy, nonprofits, and civic leaders in our region. GNOF and UNO conducted online and phone surveys beginning March 23, 2020 through April 13, 2020 which targeted 501(c)3 public charities, excluding churches, foundations, and unique groups of larger nonprofits such as hospitals, universities, and charter schools. The validity of these services, however, has not been subjected to serious empirical scrutiny. JOHNSON CITY – Picture a groundhog-sized animal with horns on its nose like a rhinoceros, and you have a pretty good idea of the new species of extinct rodent described in a recent paper in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology. It is only the sixth species of “horned gopher” ever discovered, and it has allowed researchers to tackle some questions about why and how these little critters evolved horns.

Dr. Brenda Louw, Chair of the Department Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at East Tennessee State University, is stepping down as chair after 11 years in that position on July 31, 2020 to focus on her research and enjoy her teaching in the Speech-Language Pathology master’s program and in various personnel preparation grants.

Louw joined ETSU from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where she was the Chair of the Department of Communication Pathology. She and her husband Jack, moved to Johnson City in 2009. They became U.S. citizens in 2016.

ETSU Health Internal Medicine held its 2020 graduation at the Veterans Administration campus Gazebo on Saturday, May 30.  Due to the current COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, the event was recorded for friends and family to view. 

Twenty-one residents completed their three-year program as required by the ACGME, which will allow these individuals to become Board Certified in Internal Medicine as a field of practice.  They may also continue their education through additional training fellowships within the areas of: cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology, oncology, infectious diseases and pulmonology.
