An Ardl Approach In Studying The Impact Of Asf And Selected Factors On The Philippine Pork Market Retail Price, Lara Paul A. Ebal Jan 2021

An Ardl Approach In Studying The Impact Of Asf And Selected Factors On The Philippine Pork Market Retail Price, Lara Paul A. Ebal

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

This study aimed to explore the impact of the farmgate price of hogs, the volume of hog production, the volume of imported pork, the market retail price per kilo of dressed chicken, the quantity of pork consumed by the population, the GDP per capita, and African Swine Fever (ASF) on the pork market retail price in the Philippines. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach was implemented to model the pork price using quarterly data from 2000 to 2020. The long-run model showed that farmgate price, hog production, and imported pork during the presence of ASF could affect pork price. Moreover, …

Investigating The Intention To Work Overseas Among Filipino Engineering Students By Testing A Structural Equation Model Based On An Extended Theory Of Planned Behavior, John Lester Remot, Maria Liezel P. Caroche, Alan Marco S. Mercado, Marc Joseph S. Villanueva Jan 2021

Villanueva

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

This study examined the antecedents of Filipino engineering students’ intention to work overseas, applying the theory of planned behavior (TPB) (involving attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) extended with migration push and pull factors (PPF) (involving salary and compensation, career prospects, and quality of life). Structural equation modeling using 1,706 questionnaire responses proved that the PPF dimensions were indistinguishable, while another factor distinct from attitude, evoking the perceived enjoyment of working overseas (PEJ), emerged. The TPB and PPF were identified as important antecedents of intention (R2 = 0.667). PEJ had no direct effect on it but was significant along …

Social Media Gains Importance After The Covid-19, Andrew N. Mason, John Narcum, Kevin Mason Jan 2021

Social Media Gains Importance After The Covid-19, Andrew N. Mason, John Narcum, Kevin Mason

Faculty Publications - The LeMoyne Smith School of Business

This exploratory research examines how the COVID-19 pandemic led to increases in consumers’ social media marketing behaviors in the United States (U.S.). Previous research on the impact of a pandemic has focused on behavior for preventive health, however, little attention has been given to the impact of a pandemic on consumer behaviors. To bridge this gap, the Consumer Decision-Making Model was used as a framework to investigate changes in consumers’ social media behaviors as they perform various consumer decision-making processes. More specifically, a questionnaire was used to collect survey data from 327 U.S. consumers. Analysis of Variance tests were performed …

Does Working Outside The Firm Make Next Generation Members More Successful Inside Their Family Firm?, Isabel C. Botero, Juliana Binhote, Joseph Astrachan, Carol Wittmeyer Jan 2021

Does Working Outside The Firm Make Next Generation Members More Successful Inside Their Family Firm?, Isabel C. Botero, Juliana Binhote, Joseph Astrachan, Carol Wittmeyer

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

Family business owners often receive the advice that for a next generation to succeed they need to work outside the firm. This suggestion is often based on personal beliefs from those offering the advice given that there is no empirical work that can help support this claim. To explore whether working outside the family firm makes for more successful future family business leaders, we conducted in-depth interviews with members of 11 successful family businesses. Our focus was on understanding what type of experiences (i.e., outside the firm and/or inside the firm) next generation members were exposed to and how this …

Competition In Economic Theory And The Skew In U.S. Corporate Wealth Creation, Marc H. Pentacoff Jan 2021

Competition In Economic Theory And The Skew In U.S. Corporate Wealth Creation, Marc H. Pentacoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historical studies of U.S. capital markets show a dramatic skew in the distribution of corporate wealth. This thesis investigates the evolution of economic thought related to realistic models of competition, seeking to find the most suitable theory of competition to explain this skew in U.S. corporate wealth creation. The incorporation of realistic elements into the static theories of competition leads to theoretical difficulties in the early 20th century. Another line of thought developed non-equilibrium dynamic models of competition, culminating in Schumpeter. In Schumpeter, firms seek to manage the uncertainty f rom rapid change induced by innovation and increasing returns by …

Corporate Ventures: Relational Microfoundations Of Innovation Performance, Burak Malkoc Jan 2021

Corporate Ventures: Relational Microfoundations Of Innovation Performance, Burak Malkoc

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Large, established companies invest in innovation to sustain and improve their competitiveness. In addition to in-house R&D departments, they acquire startup companies and operate them under a separate organizational structure. Corporate ventures’ success depends on many factors, such as available resources, compensation schemes, and acquisition strategies, which have been explored in the extant literature. This study explores the antecedents of corporate venture innovation performance through the lens of dynamic capabilities and social capital theories. Existing research on dynamic capabilities has explored its microfoundations of managerial cognition and top management initiatives. However, the development of dynamic capabilities requires actors’ level interactions …

A Multi-Agent Semi-Cooperative Unmanned Air Traffic Management Model With Separation Assurance, Yanchao Liu Jan 2021

A Multi-Agent Semi-Cooperative Unmanned Air Traffic Management Model With Separation Assurance, Yanchao Liu

Industrial and Systems Engineering Faculty Research Publications

This paper presents an air traffic management framework to enable multiple fleets of unmanned aerial vehicles to traverse dense, omni-directional air traffic safely and efficiently. The main challenge addressed here is separation assurance in the absence of full coordination and communication. In this framework, each fleet is independently managed by a routing agent, which progressively plans the non-overlapping move-ahead corridors for vehicles in the fleet by solving a nonlinear optimization model. The model is artfully designed so that agents of different fleets need not engage in complicated multilateral communications or make guesses about external vehicles’ flight intents to maintain effective …

Gender Differences In The Pay Of Professional Basketball Players, Nola Agha, David Berri Jan 2021

Gender Differences In The Pay Of Professional Basketball Players, Nola Agha, David Berri

Sport Management

In 1891, James Naismith invented the game of basketball at Springfield College to find something for male students at the school to do during the New England winter. The next year Senda Berenson organized the first women’s basketball game with slightly different rules 25 miles away at Smith College (Hult & Trekell, 1991). By 1900, the game had spread to colleges, high schools, and amateur clubs across the country (Emery & Toohey-Costa, 1991). Although both men and women have essentially played this game since its introduction, the men's game has generally received a much greater share of attention and funding. …

Investigating Financial Biases That Can Increase Impact On Paying Bills And Saving, Lucy M. Delgadillo

Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Faculty Publications

This article explores financial biases and their relation to financial management behaviors. Using cognitive, evolutionary psychology, and behavioral finance theories, this study suggests that biases can be intentionally used to our benefit. The study shows statistically significant associations between some biases and financial management practices such as paying bills on time and saving regularly in the surveyed sample. The study provides insights into intentionally using financial biases to increase impact and success by helping individuals commit to the best course of action or choose the least costly financial alternative.

Isolating Price Promotions: The Influence Of Promotional Timing On Promotion Redemption, Daniel Sheehan, Koert Van Ittersum Jan 2021

Isolating Price Promotions: The Influence Of Promotional Timing On Promotion Redemption, Daniel Sheehan, Koert Van Ittersum

Marketing & Supply Chain Faculty Publications

This research investigates how the timing of the promotional encounter, whether consumers encounter a promotion in isolation or at the moment of choice alongside other products, influences how consumers evaluate and redeem a promotional offer. Three studies demonstrate that isolated promotions for premium brands are more effective than traditional shelf promotions in persuading consumers to purchase the promoted product as these promotions alter how consumers evaluate and justify purchasing the promoted products. Specifically, isolated promotions lead consumers to focus relatively less on the price of the promoted product compared to its quality. This reduced focus on price assuages the negative …

How Different Esg Factors Across Cultures Affect Financial Performance, Matej Susec, Marc Sardy Jan 2021

How Different Esg Factors Across Cultures Affect Financial Performance, Matej Susec, Marc Sardy

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the financial performance of publicly traded companies based on their ESG factors’ specific commitment across different cultures. Using ESG ratings from HIP Investor Inc. on companies the agency evaluates and cultural dimensions as defined by Geert Hofstede, the average stock return of companies was compared to countries’ main stock indexes. The results show that the majority of the analyzed combinations of ESG factors and cultural dimensions outperformed the main stock indexes between the years 2016 and 2020. Moreover, it seems that for ESG committed companies, culture plays a role in ESG practices as well as financial performance.

Migrant Labor And Remittances: Macroeconomic Consequences And Policy Responses, Sokchea Lim, Akm Mahbub Morshed, Stephen J. Turnovsky Jan 2021

Migrant Labor And Remittances: Macroeconomic Consequences And Policy Responses, Sokchea Lim, Akm Mahbub Morshed, Stephen J. Turnovsky

2021 Faculty Bibliography

Many developing countries experiencing poor domestic economic performance view migrant labor as an alternative. We employ a macrodynamic model of two small open economies—a host country and a labor-exporting developing country—to address this issue. We analyze how both economies are impacted by alternative tax policies, structural changes occurring in the two economies, and plausible fiscal policy responses. The most important feature of the model is that remittances are endogenized by being linked to the household members’ decisions to migrate. Extensive numerical simulations provide important implications for both fiscal and migration policies and address important questions regarding the current efforts put …

Facets Of Work: Enriching The Description, Analysis, Design, And Evaluation Of Systems In Organizations, Steven Alter Jan 2021

Facets Of Work: Enriching The Description, Analysis, Design, And Evaluation Of Systems In Organizations, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This conceptual contribution introduces the idea of “facets of work” and explains how it can be applied to challenges in today’s IS discipline. The notion of facets of work emerged from earlier attempts to bring more knowledge and richer, more evocative ideas to SA&D. Focusing on facets of work during initial discussions of requirements could provide guidance without jumping prematurely to details, precision, and formal notation needed for producing testable software. The introduction explains the paper’s goal and organization. The next section defines facet of work, identifies underlying assumptions and criteria, and explains how 18 facets of work were identified. …

“A Proposed Theoretical Foundation For The Information Systems Discipline (Version 1.1), Steven Alter Jan 2021

“A Proposed Theoretical Foundation For The Information Systems Discipline (Version 1.1), Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

“Rethink the theoretical foundations of the IS discipline” is one of the grand challenges for IS research identified in a Delphi study in Business Information Systems Engineering (Becker et al., 2015). This draft addresses that challenge directly through an integrated approach to the operation and evolution of systems. Almost any attempt to articulate a theoretical foundation for IS (a TFIS) would need to cover that topic although other attempts might emphasize other topics and other viewpoints. Version 1.0 went to colleagues who provided early feedback at conferences or at university visits. It also went to co-authors and others who might …

Immigrant-Owned Small Businesses’ Participation In Diaspora Philanthropy: A Case Study During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Ximeng Chen Jan 2021

Immigrant-Owned Small Businesses’ Participation In Diaspora Philanthropy: A Case Study During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Ximeng Chen

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Purpose – The concept of diaspora philanthropy contains the following two components: diasporas, who are individuals who live outside of their homelands but maintain a sense of identity with their home countries, and charitable giving provided by these diasporas to causes related to their hometowns. Often diaspora philanthropy happens through intermediary organizations such as hometown associations, internet-based philanthropic platforms and faith-based groups. Little research explores immigrant-owned small businesses as intermediary organizations for diaspora philanthropy. In the literature of social entrepreneurship, the theory of opportunity recognition provides insights on how do businesses identify opportunities for fulfilling social missions. However, it is …
