Designing A Multiple Submission Policy Supporting Mastery Learning For A Design Thinking Class In A Purely Online Learning Environment, Marianne Kayle Amurao, Joseph Benjamin R. Ilagan
Quantitative Methods and Information Technology Faculty Publications
Mastery learning is defined as an approach where students are equipped with complex skills required in the VUCA world instead of simple skills that only apply to traditional classrooms. One way to encourage mastery learning in the classroom is through repeated assessment, specifically formative ones. In this paper, we describe our experience in designing a multiple submission policy to support mastery learning for a design thinking class taught purely online amidst lockdowns due to COVID. The transition to online learning and today’s context presented an opportunity to target mastery learning instead of traditional learning outcomes, which we achieved in two …

Share pledging has become popular as a method of loan collateral among Chinese shareholders. Our research used a sample of Chinese listed firms between 2008–2018 and produced two main findings. Firstly, we found a negative association between stock price risk and firm profitability. Our second finding was that the interaction effect of share pledging and stock price risk is greater on firm profitability than the effect of stock price risk itself. We examined the role of share pledging by modeling pooled OLS and fixed effects using share pledging behavior, controlling shareholders’ share pledging and the share pledging ratio to reinforce …

Financial inclusion generally understood to mean the method of ensuring access to appropriate financial products and services needed by all sections of society including vulnerable groups at an economical cost. It's an immediate impact on the expansion of the economy of the country. This paper analyses the effect of Indian citizen participation in financial inclusion and identifies …
Optimum Commodity Taxation When Employment Matters, P. Nandakumar Warreir
Optimum Commodity Taxation When Employment Matters, P. Nandakumar Warreir
International Review of Business and Economics
Ramsey's inelasticity rule for optimum commodity taxation has been criticized for indicating tax rates for basic necessities which have lower elasticities of demand than luxury consumption items. However, it is noted that skilful marketing techniques tend to lower the demand elasticities of luxury items so that it is not evident that the Ramsey rule is inequitable. In this paper equity concerns from a macroeconomic viewpoint are introduced, modifying the Ramsey rule approach by including total employment in the decision-maker's utility function. Then it is seen that the relative tax rate of the product which is more labour-intensive in production is …

Concentrated Ownership And Firm’S Performance: A Bibliometric Analysis Of The Literature, Ada Guštin Habuš, Janez Prašnikar
Economic and Business Review
The article aims to describe the historical sequence, interrelatedness, and development of dominant and emerging research areas within the concentrated ownership literature. Moreover, it aims to determine the most influential articles, authors, journals, and countries in the field by applying a bibliometric analysis. The latter reveals that the future research concerning concentrated ownership should be more country-based and use consistent and more extended data sets. It should also apply different theoretical frameworks, profound institutional analysis, and look for cross-fertilization of ideas, which could be spread worldwide.

Logistics Outsourcing In Large Manufacturing Companies: The Case Of Slovenia And Lessons From Other Countries, Marko Budler, Marko Jakšič, Teja Vilfan
Economic and Business Review
Logistics outsourcing is a mode of operation for companies in global supply chains that have been increasingly devoting more attention to their core activities. This study examines the state-of-the-art in logistics outsourcing in the Slovenian manufacturing industry. Additionally, the authors benchmark the findings against a similar study from 2013. Finally, this study provides a discussion of logistics-outsourcing specifics in some countries with the use of secondary data. We identify transportation as a top-ranked logistics activity, and a general propensity for higher-level logistics outsourcing (e.g. 4PL). The authors contribute to the supply-chain management society by identifying the drivers of, barriers to, …

Risk Communication In The Tourism Industry, Lindsay E. Usher, Ashley Schroeder
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
This chapter focuses on risk communication in the tourism sector. Tourism organizations must communicate with a variety of stakeholders when conveying messages about impending severe weather or disasters, which are increasing due climate change and sea level rise. There is also an increased need to distribute information to tourism stakeholders about preparing for, continuing service during, and recovering from, disasters. Stakeholders involved with the tourism industry include business owners, government officials and tourists, all of whom have differing degrees of vulnerability in a destination when a threat occurs. Different messages regarding disaster preparation and recovery must be communicated to the …
The Role Of Expectation–Reality Discrepancy In Service Contracts, Xuying Zhao, Hong Guo, Gangshu (George) Cai
The Role Of Expectation–Reality Discrepancy In Service Contracts, Xuying Zhao, Hong Guo, Gangshu (George) Cai
Information Systems and Analytics
Service contracts are common practice in some industries while being eliminated in others. To investigate this phenomenon, we identify expectation–reality discrepancy (ERD) as a key determinant. A provider's ERD is defined as consumers’ ex-ante expected valuation minus their ex-post realized valuation of the provider's service. Our analysis reveals that providers’ contract strategies critically depend on their ERDs rather than the true service valuations. A provider with a higher ERD is more likely to enforce contracts, regardless of whether the true service valuation is higher than that of the competitor. Providers should enforce contracts only when they have positive ERDs. Furthermore, …

COVID-19 has significantly influenced tourism, including tourists’ and residents’ attitudes toward tourism. At the same time, attitudes and consumer confidence are important for economic recovery in the tourism sector. This study explores the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on people’s attitudes toward tourism by analyzing time-series data on the number of COVID-19 positive cases, vaccinations, news sentiment, a total number of daily mentions of tourism, and the share of voice for positive and negative sentiment toward tourism. The applied data analysis techniques include descriptive analysis, visual representation of data, data decomposition into trend and cycle components, unit root tests, Granger …
Donor Perception And Intention Impacting Nonprofit Organizations, Emily Brohawn
Donor Perception And Intention Impacting Nonprofit Organizations, Emily Brohawn
Senior Honors Theses
The perception of a donor and their inevitable intention as it relates to their formed opinion is the framework of consumer-organizational interaction within the world of nonprofits. Realizing the elements that directly influence the perception one forms of an organization allows businesses to discover the best ways to market their message and present themselves in a way they deem most appropriate. Understanding an organization’s influence and ability to manipulate the view of the consumer plays a large part in the nonprofit sector, determining how much a nonprofit will be supported by potential donors. The donor behavior that relays their perception …

Identifying Board Of Director Network Influence For Firm Characteristics, Aparna Gupta, Abena Owusu, Lei Zou
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
We utilize multiplex network analysis to evaluate the relationship between firms’ characteristics and board of director networks. Studying a sample of 384 board members of 20 largest US energy and utility firms, 10 from each sector, the firms are differentiated by a clustering analysis on their firm-level characteristics. The firms’ board member connections are represented in a multiplex network consisting of two layers, one for the board members’ direct connections and another for their indirect connections. Four additional sub-layers are identified for each major layer of the multiplex network to represent corporate, non-profit organization, education and government/military connections between the …

Revisiting Strategy In A Time Of Crisis, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The season of upheaval brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic is a critical occasion for libraries to revisit their organizational strategies. Strategy includes two complementary dimensions: alignment with the environment and the pursuit of competitive advantage. Rapid changes in the environment call for practicing strategic thinking iteratively rather than engaging in a fixed rhythm of multi-year planning. An effective library strategy displays four key attributes: (1) It responds to the concerns of diverse stakeholders. (2) It is flexible enough to adapt to emerging conditions. (3) It enacts organizational mission but can also help to reshape it. (4) It integrates with …
Computational Simulation Of The Lung Doses Of Air-Borne Fine And Ultrafine Particles Inhaled By Humans At Industrial Workplaces, Mohammed Ali
Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study correlates computational predictions with in-vivo experimental results of inhaled fine and ultrafine particulate matters (PMs) transport, dissemination, and deposition in the human respiratory airways. Epidemiological studies suggest that workplace exposure of anthropogenic pollutant PMs as a risk factor for increased susceptibility to acute broncho-pulmonary infections. However, investigations on detailed human inhalation and PM transport processes are restrictive from time, cost, and ethical perspectives. To overcome this problem, computational simulation of particle deposition based on the Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model was employed. Here, the physical, mechanical, and electrical properties of PMs of carbon black and nanoparticles from …

Institutional Theory In Sport: A Scoping Review, Jonathan Robertson, Mathew Dowling, Marvin Washington, Becca Leopkey, Dana Lee Ellis, Lee Smith
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Institutional theory has generated considerable insight into fundamental issues within sport. This study seeks to advance Washington and Patterson’s review by providing an empirical review of institutional theory in sport. We follow Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review protocol to identify 188 sport-related institutional studies between 1979 and 2019. Our review provides evidence regarding the state of institutional scholarship within sport via an analysis of authorship, year, journal, methodology, method, study population, and use of institutional constructs (legitimacy, isomorphism, change, logics, fields, and work). Rather than a hostile takeover or a joint venture proposed in Washington and Patterson’s review, the relationship …

Investigating The Effects Of Dimension-Specific Sentiments On Product Sales: The Perspective Of Sentiment Preferences, Cuiqing Jiang, Jianfei Wang, Qian Tang, Xiaozhong Lyu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While literature has reached a consensus on the awareness effect of online word-of-mouth (eWOM), this paper studies its persuasive effect, specifically, the dimension-specific sentiment effects on product sales. We allow the sentiment information in eWOM along different product dimensions to have different persuasive effects on consumers’ purchase decisions. This occurs because of consumers’ sentiment preference, which is defined as the relative importance consumers place on various dimension-specific sentiments. We use an aspect-level sentiment analysis to derive the dimension-specific sentiments and PVAR (panel vector auto-regression) models to estimate their effects on product sales using a movie panel dataset. The findings show …

The Idaho Human Rights Act Is Long Overdue For A Legislative Update, Susan E. Park, Doug A. Werth
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Idaho Human Rights Act (“IHRA”) needs attention. The Idaho Legislature has not made a meaningful amendment to the Act since 2005, when it expanded protections for persons with disabilities.1 It has neglected to update the IHRA after landmark federal enactments such as the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, the Civil Rights Act of 1991, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008. The statutory disconnect created by this legislative lapse has magnified the importance of how courts apply federal case law to the IHRA, particularly in light of the …
