Retention Strategies For Call Center Representatives In The U.S. Airline Industry, Lisa Lott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Voluntary turnover of call center employees threatens productivity, service levels, the customer experience, and the financial stability of businesses. Airline business call center leaders should be concerned about the time, stress, and cost of hiring and training new employees and the negative impact on business outcomes. Grounded in Mitchell’s job embeddedness theory, the purpose of this qualitative single-case study was to explore strategies airline business call center leaders use to reduce voluntary turnover among customer service representatives. The participants were five leaders in an airline business call center located in Houston, Texas. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and a …

Strategies For Succession Planning Of Retiring Baby Boomers, Sonya Mcfadden
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIn 2020, over 20 million baby boomers retired, with an annual average growth of two million yearly. The continuous trend of baby boomers retiring from the workforce has leaders focusing on the replacement of one of the largest working classes that the world has seen. Grounded in transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study to explore succession planning strategies human resources managers use to manage the transition of experience, knowledge, and skills influenced by retiring baby boomers. Five human resources leaders from the southeastern United States participated in semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic …

Data Analytics And Decision-Making Systems: Implications Of The Global Outbreaks, Desheng Wu, David L. Olson, James H. Lambert
Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics: Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the goals and functions of technology-based systems around the world [16]. From a health perspective, the World Health Organization has reported that over six million have died of the disease. Government efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 have had drastic impact on global supply chains. The world’s health systems have been heavily taxed. Travel is difficult anywhere, and more difficult internationally. Economies are still in downturns [13], as many workers have been taken out of the economy for indefinite periods of time, and the structure of work has radically changed, with many working remotely …

Preferences For Paid Paternity Leave Availability, Lengths Of Leave Offerings, And Government Funding Of Paternity Leaves In The United States, Chris Knoester, Qi Li
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This study analyzes 2012 General Social Survey data (N = 1,089) about preferences for paid paternity leave availability, lengths of leave offerings, and government funding of leaves. It highlights gender and gendered parenting role attitudes as predictors of leave preferences. Descriptive results revealed sizable (i.e., 53 percent) support for leave availability and moderate (i.e., 33 percent) support for some government funding; still, only modest (i.e., five weeks) lengths of leave offerings were desired. Regression results indicated that women were typically more likely than men to support more generous leave offerings. Consistently, dual-earner expectations were positively associated with preferences for more …

The Commercialist Identity Of Mid-Tier Firm Auditors: A Precarious Balancing Of Priorities, Michael Harber, Gizelle D. Willows
Business Papers and Journal Articles
Purpose: This paper aims to extend our understanding of how mid-tier firm auditors legitimise and institutionalise the logic of commercialism within their profession. This paper is responsive to research that shows how Big Four auditors have restructured the market and re-cast the relationality between the two logics to forge an identity that suits them commercially. Such research provides insight into auditor agency and intentionality, illustrating how auditors maintain and indeed grow their status and role within society.
Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured interviews with audit executives situated in a strategically challenging regulatory context are interpreted through a theoretical framework developed from institutional …

Green Advertising Using Sick-, Well-, And Healed-Appeals, Dooyoung Choi, Ha Kyung Lee
STEMPS Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of sick, well, and healed appeals while examining the interaction effect of the saliency of environmental issues in the fashion industry on consumer responses. A 3 x 2 experimental study was conducted with the appeals (sick vs. well vs. healed appeals) and the salience for environmental issues in fashion (low vs. high) as independents and positive and negative anticipated emotions as mediators, leading to purchase intentions. A total of 195 usable responses were collected through MTurk. While all appeals worked well with consumers with high saliency through anticipated positive emotions, …

Can I Touch The Clothes On The Screen? The Touch Effect In Online Shopping, Ha Kyung Lee, Dooyoung Choi
STEMPS Faculty Publications
We examined the interplay effects of device types (touch vs. non-touch) and the tactile sensitivity (fur vs. woven) on the product attitudes mediated by the mental simulation for touch. The participants from MTurk were randomly assigned to one of two tactile conditions. Responses from those who used tablets (n=83, touch device) and laptops (n=96, non-touch device) were included in the analysis. The main effects of device types and tactile-sensitivity on the mental simulation for touch were significant. The interaction effect of device types and tactile sensitivity was also significant. Those participants seeing the less tactile-sensitive product showed greater mental simulation …
The Antecedents Of Program Satisfaction And Program Loyalty For Hotel Reward Programs, Jill Plumer
The Antecedents Of Program Satisfaction And Program Loyalty For Hotel Reward Programs, Jill Plumer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Hotel reward programs have been in existence for three decades. These programs were originally established as a customer relationship management tool to reward loyal guests for their patronage. Over time, there have been indications that the programs that are intended to inspire loyalty to the company have actually inspired loyalty to the program itself. The aim of this study was to analyze the antecedents of program satisfaction and program loyalty in hotels to determine the relationship between the program attributes and the impact on program loyalty. Switching costs were also analyzed to determine if they played a moderating role in …
Employing A Network Perspective To Study Hazardous Events In Tourism: Tourism Connections, Island Preferences, And Tourism Market Concentrations In The Hawaiian Islands (2015-2021), Frida Bahja
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this study was to employ a network perspective to detect fluctuations in tourism (at the level of tourism areas and by inbound tourism markets) that co-occur with hazardous events. Specifically, the study focuses on the Air Travel Tourism (ATT) network of the Hawaiian Islands and its changes with the incidence of nine hazardous events from 2015 to 2021. The three main aspects of the ATT network, which include tourism connections, island preferences, and concentrations of inbound tourism markets were analyzed for a total of eighty-four monthly and seven annual network models. The results suggest that the network …

A Pair Trading Using Reinforcement Learning And Wavelet Decomposition, Panudate Nithinon
A Pair Trading Using Reinforcement Learning And Wavelet Decomposition, Panudate Nithinon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this study, we propose a trading optimization methodology for the pair trading strategy. The Johansen cointegration test and the correlation measure are used for pair selection. We apply Deep-Q-network (DQN) technique in which the trainable reinforcement learning agent is designed to directly control the trading positions. The maximum overlap discrete wavelet transformation (MODWT) algorithm is used for generating the trading signal from the spread time series. Wavelet signal preprocessing is used to extract the original time series into cyclic time series components and long-term behavior components. Based on the in-sample performance this trading model successfully solves a profit maximizing …
Can Gambling Increase Savings? Empirical Evidence On Prize- Linked Savings Accounts, Shawn Cole, Benjamin Iverson, Peter Tufano
Can Gambling Increase Savings? Empirical Evidence On Prize- Linked Savings Accounts, Shawn Cole, Benjamin Iverson, Peter Tufano
Faculty Publications
This paper studies the adoption and impact of prize-linked savings (PLS) accounts, which offer lottery-like payouts to individual account holders in lieu of interest. Using microlevel data from a bank in South Africa, we show that PLS is attractive to a broad group of individuals, with financially constrained individuals and those with no other deposit accounts particularly likely to participate. Individuals who choose to use PLS increase their total savings on average by 1% of annual income. Exploiting the random assignment of prizes,we present causal evidence that PLS substitutes for lottery gambling but is a complement to standard savings.

Financial Capacity And The Demand For Audit Quality, Chee Yeow Lim, Gerald J. Lobo, Pingui Rao, Heng Yue
Financial Capacity And The Demand For Audit Quality, Chee Yeow Lim, Gerald J. Lobo, Pingui Rao, Heng Yue
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Prior research documents that financial capacity could be positively or negatively associated with the demand for audit quality. We re-examine this relation using changes in local real estate prices as exogenous shocks to corporate financial capacity. Using auditor size, auditor industry specialisation, and auditor fees as measures of audit quality, we find robust evidence that an increase (decrease) in financial capacity significantly reduces (increases) the demand for audit quality, and that this relation is more pronounced when firms are more financially constrained, when external monitoring by institutional investors and financial analysts is weaker, and when there is more negative news …

DLSU Business & Economics Review
Independent directors on a firm’s board are theorized to enhance corporate governance by mitigating agency conflicts. However, some independent directors, referred to as grey directors, have prior relationships with managers that may hamper this role. Using data for Philippine firms, we construct a measure that categorizes independent directors as truly independent or grey, based on the 12 criteria used to define board independence as stipulated in the 2017 Philippine Corporate Governance Code. This measure is used to examine which firms are more likely to appoint grey directors and how the presence of grey directors affects firm performance. Consistent with agency …

To achieve this goal, we identified differences between the experimental and control groups. The experimental group was given knowledge of audit quality, whereas the control group had no treatment during the process selection of PAF. There were 10 indicators used in term of audit quality, namely audit workload, business expertise, audit turnover, audit hours, result of employee satisfaction surveys, partner compensation, result of client satisfaction surveys, PCAOB inspection results, restatements on audit …

A Theoretical Approach In Explaining The Impact Of Remittances On The Macroeconomy: Evidence From An Overlapping Generations Model For The Philippines, John Paolo R. Rivera
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Despite the constraints posed by the coronavirus pandemic on the global movement of migrant workers, cash remittance inflows remained to be a significant component of the Philippine economy. It still comprises a significant proportion of the economy’s gross domestic product and exceeds the influx of overseas development assistance and foreign direct investments. On top of the various empirical studies discussing the effects of remittances on the macroeconomy, I took the theoretical approach in explicating its impact on the macroeconomy. Through a micro-founded macro-model overlapping generations model, I trace the effects of remittances on the path of steady-state aggregate income, capital …

Small Area Estimates Of Poverty In Region Iii, Caesar B. Cororaton, Arlene B. Inocencio, Alellie B. Sobreviñas, Emmanuel Dc. Barnedo
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Official estimates of the Philippine Statistical Authority (PSA) poverty incidence prior to 2018 are reliable up to the regional level as these are consistent with the sampling domain of the data used for estimation. Below this level, the PSA poverty estimates are unreliable because of very large sampling errors. The high level of unreliability makes the estimates less useful for poverty policy targeting. This paper addresses this concern by combining the Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) and the Census of Population and Housing (CPH) data and using an increasingly accepted technique for small area estimation (SAE). We estimate the …
