How Incidents Impact Congestion On Roadways: A Queuing Network Approach, Pedro Cesar Lopes Gerum, Melike Baykal-Gursoy
How Incidents Impact Congestion On Roadways: A Queuing Network Approach, Pedro Cesar Lopes Gerum, Melike Baykal-Gursoy
Supply Chain Management
Motivated by the need for transportation infrastructure and incident management planning, we study traffic density under non-recurrent congestion. This paper provides an analytical solution approximating the stationary distribution of traffic density in roadways where deterioration of service occurs unpredictably. The proposed solution generalizes a queuing model discussed in the literature to long segments that are not space-homogeneous. We compare single and tandem queuing approaches to segments of different lengths and verify whether each model is appropriate. A single-queue approach works sufficiently well in segments with similar traffic behavior across space. In contrast, a tandem-queue approach more appropriately describes the density …

Could Television Streaming Sites Lead The Charge For Film-Induced Tourism Post Covid?, Jennifer Stewart
Books/Book Chapters
By focusing on television film-induced tourists, this chapter will contribute to a better understanding of tourist behaviour in relation to motivations for travel to filming locations. The chapter combines, analyses, and critiques the main debates raised by key authors in relation to identifying the motivational factors that prompt site-specific film tourism as well as providing contributions from this author’s 2016 research on television film-induced tourism in Ireland. The chapter is divided into the following sections: a brief history of film and television and a review and discussion on film tourism, a breakdown of the different categories of film tourist and …
Festivals And The City: The Contested Geographies Of Urban Events, Andrew Smith, Guy Osborn, Bernadette Quinn
Festivals And The City: The Contested Geographies Of Urban Events, Andrew Smith, Guy Osborn, Bernadette Quinn
Books / Book chapters
This book explores how festivals and events affect urban places and public spaces, with a particular focus on their role in fostering inclusion. The ‘festivalisation’ of culture, politics and space in cities is often regarded as problematic, but this book examines the positive and negative ways that festivals affect cities by examining festive spaces as contested spaces. The book focuses on Western European cities, a particularly interesting context given the social and cultural pressures associated with high levels of in-migration and concerns over the commercialisation and privatisation of public spaces.
The key themes of this book are the quest for …

Chargemasters In The Age Of Hospital Price Transparency, Anthony Drumm
Chargemasters In The Age Of Hospital Price Transparency, Anthony Drumm
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: The cost of health care services in the United States (U.S.) varies from state to state and facility to facility. The compilation of such costs and their associated codes is referred to as a chargemaster, or charge description master (CDM), and each is unique to an individual facility. . The implementation of the 2019 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Hospital Price Transparency Rule was an initial step toward consumer empowerment by making services more shoppable but published CDM data failed to present the information most pertinent to patients: total out-of-pocket costs and the availability of lower-cost alternatives. Initiatives …

Sars-Cov-2 And Its Impact On Emergency Medicine, Abby Fowler
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic impacted hospitals and healthcare workers throughout the world. This research sought to determine how the pandemic affected the mental health of healthcare workers in critical care, primarily because of hospitals’ focus on finances instead of healthcare workers’ mental well-being. This research included extensive literature review as well as a semi-structured interview with an emergency medicine physician in Ashland, KY, who worked before the COVID-19 pandemic and during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was hypothesized that as hospitals attempted to focus primarily on recovering financial losses incurred from the pandemic, the mental health of clinicians fell through the …
Contractual Stakeholderism, Kishanthi Parella
Contractual Stakeholderism, Kishanthi Parella
Scholarly Articles
In 2019, the Business Roundtable announced its commitment to all corporate stakeholders—consumers, employees, suppliers, and communities—and not just shareholders. This announcement has reawakened an old debate over corporate social responsibility. Stakeholderism advocates argue that corporate leaders must consider the interests of the various stakeholders impacted by corporate decision-making. Stakeholderism critics challenge this view, expressing concerns that stakeholderism will magnify managerial agency costs, chill regulation, risk inauthenticity, and lead to impractical solutions.
This Article proposes “contractual stakeholderism” to operationalize stakeholderism in accordance with the views of its advocates but in a way that is attentive to the concerns of its critics. …
Corporate Governance And The Feminization Of Capital, Sarah C. Haan
Corporate Governance And The Feminization Of Capital, Sarah C. Haan
Scholarly Articles
At the start of the twentieth century, women made up a small proportion of shareholders in American publicly traded companies. By 1956, women were the majority of individual shareholders. Although this change in shareholder gender demographics happened gradually, it was evident early in the century: Before the 1929 stock market crash, women shareholders had come to outnumber men at some of America’s largest and most influential corporations, including AT&T, General Electric, and the Pennsylvania Railroad. This Article synthesizes information from a range of historical sources to reveal an overlooked narrative of corporate history—the feminization of capital, or the transformation of …

Call For Research: Towards The Right-Sizing Of Regulations For Business Performance, Brian Mulligan, Nelson Granados
Graziadio Working Paper Series
Nobel Prize Laureate Hayek warned the U.S. was susceptible to wrong-sized regulations leading to market failure. We seek to understand where we are relative to Hayek’s portention, the effects of regulations on business performance, and how to right-size regulations to establish a healthy business environment. Previous research contains different underlying evidence and methods because they are from diverse, bias, incomplete, or propagandized angles, making productive discourse difficult and increasing epistemological polarity. Thus, this paper is a call for research to quantify the costs and benefits of regulation on business, with specific requests for action on contemporary regulatory dilemmas. The spectrum …

Extreme climatic events trigger changes in ecosystems with potential negative impacts for people. These events may provide an opportunity for environmental managers and decision-makers to improve the governance of social-ecological systems, however there is conflicting evidence regarding whether these actors are indeed able to change governance after extreme climatic events. In addition, the majority of research to date has focused on changes in specific policies or organizations after crises. A broader investigation of governance actors’ activities is needed to more fully understand whether or not crises trigger change. Here we demonstrate the use of a social network analysis of management …

This study explores how the motivational framing of a network training program may positively or (inadvertently) adversely impact participants' discomfort with strategic networking and motivation to network. We examine the impact of a “me-focused” framing (i.e., on the personal career benefits that individuals can accrue through strategic networking) and a “we-focused” framing (i.e., on the benefits to the team/organization of individuals' strategic networking) compared to a control group in two field-based quasi-experiments. In both studies, we found no difference between the two training frames in their effect on the two training outcomes when looking at participants' reactions, on average. However, …

Organizations are increasingly recognizing the important role employee inclusion perceptions play in promoting positive employee attitudes and behaviors. Although social networks are frequently cited as being a driver of perceived inclusion, little empirical work has examined the social network conditions that give rise to it. We address this gap by examining how both network position (indegree centrality) and network structure (network closure) relate to perceived workplace inclusion. We test our hypotheses with a sample of 364 professionals in a multinational pharmaceutical firm. We find that both indegree centrality and network closure are positively related to perceived workplace inclusion. The relationship …

Smart grid construction provides the basic conditions for grid connection of renewable energy power generation. However, the grid connection of large-scale intermittent renewable energy sources increases the complexity of operational control of power systems. With the increase in intermittent renewable energy grid connections, distribution system operators must optimize and integrate these new participants to ensure the flexibility and stability of smart grids. Dividing the smart grid into logical clusters helps to overcome the problems caused by intermittent renewable energy grid connections. In this study, we propose a 2-step modeling approach that includes both link and leverage analyses to detect the …
