A Rule-Based Automatic Data Validation Framework For Enterprise Asset Management In The Power And Utilities Industry, Kennedy O. Oyoo Aug 2022

A Rule-Based Automatic Data Validation Framework For Enterprise Asset Management In The Power And Utilities Industry, Kennedy O. Oyoo

Theses and Dissertations

Every industry has significant data output as a product of its working processes. Power and utilities (P&U) are no exception. Power and utilities organizations generate a lot of data from different business operational systems that provide diverse inputs to a central enterprise asset management (EAM) system tasked with supporting management of physical assets over their life cycles. Physical assets which cover a range of asset types are used in the generation, transmission, and distribution of power. Asset data quality is one area which is often overlooked during the implementation of EAM systems because the focus is primarily on the final …

Essays On International Banking Regulation, Wenqing Gao Aug 2022

Essays On International Banking Regulation, Wenqing Gao

Theses and Dissertations

The first chapter analyzes the impact of macroprudential policies on bank systemic risk worldwide. Using data from 63 countries over 2001-2017, I find strong evidence that macroprudential policies are effective in reducing systemic risk at the country level. The effectiveness of macroprudential policies differs across countries in the sample. Macroprudential policies are more effective in reducing systemic risk in countries with more advanced economic development, with a higher degree of concentration in the banking sector, and with less stringent micro-prudential regulations. Bank-level evidence suggests that bank size matters. The impact of macroprudential policies on constraining bank systemic risk is more …

Evaluating The Impact Of Diversity Training In The Workplace., Vilmarie Lopez Aug 2022

Evaluating The Impact Of Diversity Training In The Workplace., Vilmarie Lopez

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Organizations worldwide have gone global and with that, the workforce demographics have shifted to a more diverse population. Scholars project that within 30 years there will not be a “majority” group in the workplace and these demographic dissimilarities will result in withdrawal behaviors such as tardiness, absenteeism, and employee turnover because employees will not feel identify with any group (David et al., 2015). Therefore, organizations are focusing their efforts on designing strategies and implementing training initiatives in order to train the workforce, not just on diversity awareness, but on how to cope with diversity in the workplace and reduce discrimination …

An Analysis Of Whether Privately Owned Financial Planning Practices Are Transitioning To Fully Independent Advice Providers, Darren Pawski, Robert Powell, Anna Golab

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In Australia, there are over 20,000 financial advisers, with only 1 % registered as independent financial advisers. This study investigates why there has been no significant transition to independent advising. The importance of the study is underlined by the substantial losses suffered by thousands of consumers from advice that has been found to be influenced by conflicts of interest. Using a qualitative technique, the study undertook exploratory semi-structured interviews among financial advisers. The study found that over 90% of privately owned advisers will not be transitioning to independent advising due to the belief that clients will not pay fees for …

Three Essays On Insider Trading, Haoyang Xiong Aug 2022

Three Essays On Insider Trading, Haoyang Xiong

Theses and Dissertations

In the first essay we study whether and how personal off-the-job managerial indiscretions impact corporate insiders’ trading behavior. We find that executives accused of personal indiscretions earn significantly higher abnormal returns from their insider purchases and sales in a 15-day window around each trade. The results are robust to matched sample analyses. Further, insiders’ historical trading pattern or corporate culture has less explanatory power than personal attributes. We also document that exposure of these indiscretions to the public provides a disciplinary effect, as insider trading profits significantly drop following the announcement of an indiscretion, despite this drop being temporary. Corporate …

Essays On Insider Trading, Innovation, And Political Economy, Jiawei Chen Aug 2022

Essays On Insider Trading, Innovation, And Political Economy, Jiawei Chen

Theses and Dissertations

I study how insider trading interacts with the political economy, regulators, and other corporate governance mechanisms. In the first section, I examine the impact of insider trading restriction enforcement on firm innovation. U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement actions are intended to protect investors and limit expropriation by firm insiders, but enforcement could impact insiders’ incentives to contribute to value enhancing activities. Therefore, I explore how corporate innovation and performance respond to insider trading restrictions imposed by firms and regulators. Using manually collected data on SEC indictments against corporate insiders, I document more innovative activity following external insider trading …

Essays On The Performance Of Option Trading Strategies, Zhuo Li Aug 2022

Essays On The Performance Of Option Trading Strategies, Zhuo Li

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two parts. In the first chapter, we examine the relative performance of four options-based investment strategies versus a buy-and-hold strategy in the underlying stock. Specifically, using ten stocks widely held in 401(k) plans, we examine monthly returns from strategies that include a long stock position as one component. These strategies are long stock, covered call, protective put, collar, and covered combination. Ignoring early exercise for simplicity, we find that the covered combination and covered call strategies generally outperform the long stock strategy, which in turn generally outperforms the collar and protective put strategies regardless of the …

The Great Resignation, Unemployment, And Underemployment In The Us: A Study Of Labor Market Segmentation, Thomas E. Lambert

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

During 2021 and 2022 many news media outlets have been reporting that millions of workers in the US have been quitting their jobs in record numbers. In a global economy rebounding from the economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 outbreak and demanding more workers, a high rate of resignations has exacerbated labor shortages and may be aggravating underemployment rates if many workers are choosing not to be part of the labor force or only to work part time. Many reasons have been offered to explain this “Great Resignation” including high day care costs for working parents which may in turn …

The Potential For Exchange-Traded Futures On Recycled Materials To Improve Recycling Efficiency, Jordan Moore, Daniel Folkinshteyn, Jordan Howell Aug 2022

The Potential For Exchange-Traded Futures On Recycled Materials To Improve Recycling Efficiency, Jordan Moore, Daniel Folkinshteyn, Jordan Howell

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Recycling has substantial environmental and economic benefits, but the recycling industry is relatively inefficient. Approximately half of all recyclable material is not actually recycled, and this inefficiency is economically and environmentally costly. This paper investigates the potential for exchange-traded futures on recycled materials to increase efficiency for the recycling industry by improving the market quality for firms that buy and sell recycled materials. The aim of this study is to statistically analyze a novel data set of prices for recycled materials to demonstrate the potential efficiency gains to introducing exchange-traded futures on recycled materials. The theoretical basis for this financial …

What If I Liked It Better Before? An Analysis Of Consumer Reactance To Brand Logo Redesigns, Lauren Bushnell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Past research has explored the relationship between logo redesigns and consumer behavior, specifically detailing the influence of brand connection on consumer processing of logo redesigns. Such research has found that variations in logo design have key implications on consumer connection to brands in ways that influence brand attitude. Key constructs explored include brand loyalty and commitment, the extent or style of changes in redesigns, and visual processing of logos as a means of determining future behaviors. While prior research emphasizes the influence of loyalty and connection to brands in relation to consumer processing of logo redesigns, research has not fully …

Organizational Effectiveness Of Rabies Division Of South Carolina Dhec, Camden Daniel Sasfai Aug 2022

Organizational Effectiveness Of Rabies Division Of South Carolina Dhec, Camden Daniel Sasfai

Honors Theses

There are two types of rabies, known as furious and paralytic, that are both spread mostly through saliva of wild or domesticated animals via scratches and bites. Both types can ultimately result in death of the human victim, yet both are vaccine-preventable diseases. Transmission of the rabies disease to humans is usually found following a deep bite or scratch from an infected animal, and transmission to humans by rabid dogs accounts for up to 99% of human infection cases, though bats are now an increasing source of human death due to rabies as well. Surprisingly enough, human deaths following exposure …
