This capstone is a photo essay documenting the experiences of a few recreational cannabis dispensary applicants. These stores will be some of the first legal dispensaries in NYS and owned by those once arrested for cannabis-- and their families. Of New York City’s 20,000 street vendors, nearly all of them are immigrants, and most are unlicensed. This makes them vulnerable to harassment, fines, and even arrest. In Corona Plaza in Queens, vendors are coming together to push for change. This is their story.

Shopping secondhand has experienced an uptick in popularity in the past few years. There are a few reasons for this, all of which are examined in the project. One reason for the increase in secondhand shoppers is the daunting news about the state of our environment. Almost a year-and-a-half after New York legalized recreational marijuana, state officials and other industry insiders praise what they view as the country's most socially equitable cannabis industry. But as New York prepares to launch its legal retail dispensary program, rollout details remain murky. The state also faces challenges with the legal industry’s most significant obstacle: illicit sales. If the state doesn’t deliver an equitable and robust market, New York risks winding up with a sputtering legal industry that could cause harm to the very people and communities it intends to lift up.

This is the story of how asbestos is removed in New York City, and who carries out the work. It's unclear how much more asbestos abatement is left in the county, and the U.S. has not completely banned the dangerous material, unlike over 50 other countries across the world. Both of these things could change soon. This capstone is a photo essay on the experiences of NYS's dispensary licenses applicants as they make their bid to be one of the first legal dispensaries in the state. The priority was to give those who've been arrested for cannabis a chance to benefit from their conviction. Photography, print, and videography were incorporated in this project.

Timeless Lessons About Leadership From The Midrash, Hershey H. Friedman

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This paper examines two ancient Midrashim and shows that many important messages about leadership are embedded in them. The first Midrash describes the critical personality trait Moses possessed that made him uniquely suitable to be a leader of the Israelites — compassion. The second Midrash appears heretical since it has Moses correcting God. Indeed, God even openly admits, "You have taught me something." The primary lessons are that leaders must be compassionate, humble, willing to listen to advice, eager to make changes when necessary, and admit to mistakes.

Positional Authority And Influence In Servant Leadership: A Conceptual Model, Kevin J. Hurt, Elliott Long

This conceptual research paper reviews how positional authority affects the servant leadership-organizational performance relationship and provides insight on how servant leadership can be implemented and effective in the absence of positional authority, i.e. through the cultivation and leveraging of influence. A review of servant leadership literature is used to propose that servant leadership is positively associated with increased organizational performance. Through the lens of upper echelon theory as well as research on the performance of organizations whose executive team practices servant leadership, we develop a model and make a case that positional authority is an important moderator of the relationship …

The message of Jon Clifton’s (2022) new book, Blind Spot, is that the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous context of business has created enormous pressures on the modern employee with 28% of employees exhibiting chronic depression, extreme sadness, or other mental health problems. Those conditions negatively affect employee commitment and engagement and hamper the ability of organizations to succeed in a highly competitive global environment. The root cause of this “well-being problem” is the convergence of a multitude of economic and social problems that challenge the best efforts of even the most capable leaders.

I have considered once again the ancients and the moderns, and those who said that ethics was laid to rest in the graveyard of sociological and psychological babblings of feelings and emotions. I think too about utilitarians — whose philosophy has become the foundation of much of modern life — with its sterile pragmatism, captured and encapsulated by a framework eliminating the nonquantifiable while sneaking in the backdoor of our values offering empty moral platitudes and religious sentiments, e.g., thoughts and prayers.

One hundred thousand years ago, give or take, the forebears of some of Australia’s First Nations—by some accounts as few as 150 people—left Africa on an immense journey. After some 2,000 generations, the passage through new and unfamiliar territories of these first modern human beings terminated in a supercontinent that included Australia, Papua, and Tasmania. By some estimates, no more than 150 people—the same number that had originally left Africa—made the final sea crossing that separates Indonesia and Australia. Lourdes, in the French Pyrenees, has been a pilgrimage site since 1858. At present, about six million Roman Catholic pilgrims and others visit Lourdes every year. During the annual weeklong pilgrimage of the Order of St John, an average of about 7,500 participants from 45 countries, including 380 doctors, nurses and pharmacists, 250 priests and other volunteers, are nursing and caring for 1,500 malades (the sick and suffering).
