Effective Talent Management Practices Of Small And Medium-Size Businesses, Annette Murphy, Jorge Gaytan, Al Endres
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
Effective Talent management strategies to acquire, develop, and retain employees are essential, as 73% of business leaders in the United States identified that good human resources practices favorably affect the efficiency and effectiveness of business operations. Based on the people capability maturity model and transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the successful strategies that leaders of small and medium-size businesses (SMBs) used to acquire, develop, and retain employees. The case population comprised five SMBs’ leaders who had successfully used talent management strategies to acquire, develop, and retain employees for more than 5 …

A Configurational Theory Of Generalized Exchange In Stakeholder-Oriented Firms, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Violet Ho, Douglas A. Bosse, Donal Crilly
Management Faculty Publications
Recent developments in stakeholder theory have refined our understanding of value creation via bilateral reciprocity. Generalized exchange is another important microfoundational mechanism in value creation, but because of the potential for free-riding it is surprising that some stakeholders contribute more resources to a firm’s value-creating nexus than would be expected based on contractual obligations, and even beyond what bilateral reciprocity would predict. This paper aims to identify the minimum conditions that promote generalized exchange in a firm’s value-creating nexus. Because generalized exchange is causally complex—it can occur in multiple contexts and through various combinations of explanatory factors—a configurational theorizing approach …

Meeting The Challenge In A Crisis: Students Perceptions Of Emergency On-Line Teaching In Saudi Arabia, Beverley Mcnally, Carmen Winkel, Wejdan Al Obaydan
Arab Economic and Business Journal
This paper explores the perceptions of a group of female Saudi Arabian university students, during the Covid-19 pandemic, regarding emergency on-line learning (EOL). The study utilized a mixed methods approach comprising two surveys. The first, examining the mechanics and structure of the shift. The second, a qualitative design eliciting the students’ responses to EOL. While the students initially enjoyed the experience, as time progressed a sense of dissatisfaction developed which became worse the longer the lockdowns lasted. The results assist policy makers, social workers, and student advisors to prepare for future crises that may result in another prolonged lockdown.

Marketing Faculty Publications
Purpose
This study aims to develop and test a process model of the effect of social media use by business-to-business (B2B) salespeople on their value cocreation and cross/upselling performance. Adopting a research acquisition perspective, the authors claim that salesperson’s social media use is critical for generating social capital – an operant resource characterized by superior market knowledge, reputation and networking – which, in turn, directly and synergistically enhances value cocreation and cross/upselling outcomes.
Design/methodology/approach
A model is developed based on extant sales research on salesperson’s social media use and social capital theory. Data from B2B salespeople is analyzed using structural …

Is Anything Left Of The Debate About The Sources Of Growth In East Asia Thirty Years Later?, Jesus Felipe, John Mccombie
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
The year 2023 commemorates the 30th anniversary of the publication of the influential, yet controversial, study The East Asian Miracle report by the World Bank (1993). An important part of the report’s analysis was concerned with the sources of growth in East Asia. This was based on the neoclassical decomposition of growth into productivity and factor accumulation. At about the same time, the publication of Alwyn Young’s (1992, 1995) and J-I Kim and Lawrence Lau’s (1994) studies, and Paul Krugman’s (1994) popularization of the “zero total factor productivity growth” thesis, led to a very important debate within the profession, on …

ChatGPT has captured the popular imagination because of its conversational voice, its wide scope of ‘knowledge’, and far-ranging abilities. In this paper, we use an innovative interview method to introduce CPAs to ChatGPT, its development, and the current state of its capabilities. We then draw upon our own expertise to discuss the evolution of large language models, suggest applications of large language models (LLMs) in the field of accounting, critically evaluate LLMs’ current strengths and weaknesses, and propose five principles to effectively and safely leverage LLMs in the accounting domain.

How Desirable Is The Medium? Effect Of Point Accumulation Scheme On Consumer Loyalty Toward Reward Program, Eujin Park
How Desirable Is The Medium? Effect Of Point Accumulation Scheme On Consumer Loyalty Toward Reward Program, Eujin Park
Asia Marketing Journal
An accruable point scenario study was applied to examine the effect of the point-accumulation trend (diminishing vs. increasing) and the nominal value (small vs. large) of a medium for repeated consumption on program loyalty. The results showed that both factors affect consumer loyalty toward a reward program. Consumers who received a medium with an increasing accumulation trend and a large nominal value perceived a reward to be more valuable than those who received a diminishing trend and a small nominal value. The results confirmed that a large nominal value or an increasing accumulation trend increased the perception of reward and …

Differential Impact Of Customer Equity Drivers On Satisfaction: The Case Of China’S Telecommunications Industry, Haejin Seo, Linlin Fu, Tae Ho Song
Asia Marketing Journal
As the necessity of customer relationship management (CRM) increases, measuring the performance of CRM have been actively discussed. Customer equity (CE) is regarded as an appropriate indicator for evaluating the outcomes of marketing activities. There are three drivers of CE: brand, value, and relationship equity. This study aims to investigate the impact of three drivers on customer satisfaction. Market competition is an environmental factor that affects the effectiveness of CRM. This study divides target firms into leaders and followers. This study found that the differential impact of CE drivers on customer satisfaction depends on the firm’s status (leader or follower). …

Rules Of Attraction: Females Perception Of Male Self-Representation In A Dating App, Olga Roshchupkina, Olga Kim, Eun-Ju Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
In the current study, we explore how women decide whether to accept or reject a potential match offered by a dating app (Tinder). Specifically, we were trying to identify overlying factors that influence the decision and understand how women make a judgment based on limited cues provided by a Tinder profile. Women largely base their decision on the perceived attractiveness and character of the potential match. The findings suggest that attractiveness is highly subjective, with no universal rules that can be quantified; thus, it is hard to predict acceptance of the potential match. There are however factors that contribute significantly …

With the increased mobility within nations, relocation has become a frequent and regular occurrence in modern life. However, we know little about how residential mobility affects purchase type. How does residential mobility affect our purchase behavior? This research explores the relationship between residential mobility and preference of purchase type, with psychological processes. The study primed participants with either a high or low mobility mindset to investigate the effect of mobility on consumption style in U.S. and South Korean. The results of the study confirm that the consideration of residential mobility shifts consumers’ preferences toward material goods and experiences. In addition, …

Sustainability Of Traditional Retail In An Emerging Market: A Conceptual Framework Applied To A Vietnamese Wet Market, Thi Tuyet Nhung Tran
Asia Marketing Journal
In emerging countries, traditional retail, such as wet markets, still accounts for a large proportion of retail sales. Traditional retail has poor infrastructure compared to modern retail, and is often associated with problems of waste, water, and environmental pollution. Therefore, traditional retail faces extreme difficulties in achieving sustainability. This study aimed to determine what value traditional retail contributes to sustainability. We generated and applied a conceptual framework of sustainability to explore this question. We used a single case study of a small-scale wet market in Vietnam. The results showed that wet markets have significant value for the development of sustainable …

Political legitimacy-building and tourism studies help to explain how and why China’s governing regime advanced Red Tourism to justify and reinforce its governance and legitimacy. A historical analysis of multilevel Chinese sources shows that the expressivity and value-ladenness that characterize visits to select historical sites permit governing regimes to softly augment their political legitimacy via political identity formation, political meaning framing, and nationalistic mobilization.

Economics Of Deficit Irrigation Utilizing Soil Moisture Probes In The Western Corn Belt, Emily O’Donnell, Lia Nogueira, Cory Walters, E Wesley F. Peterson, Suat Irmak
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Effective irrigation management is critical for future food supplies and the prosperity of producers engaged in irrigation production. Through a deficit irrigation field experiment, we determine the financial impact on producers caused by changing irrigation costs, corn prices, extreme weather events, and restricting irrigation levels. Results suggest that the optimal economic strategy within our constrained optimization model is to fully irrigate, with the economic impact highly dependent on commodity prices, restriction level, and irrigation costs. The greatest economic losses caused by irrigation restrictions come from decreases in yield. Some simulations resulted in negative profits, indicating that a switch to alternative …
