Drawing from the appraisal theory of emotion and self-conscious emotions literature, this study proposes a reparatory model of ethical silence at work. We posit that when employees maintain silence on ethical issues, they experience feelings of guilt. This guilt, in turn, propels them to engage in ethical performance as reparatory behaviors. Results from a multisource, three-wave field study supported these hypotheses. Overall, this research contributes to silence literature and provides insights into how and when ethical silence may, paradoxically, facilitate more ethical performance later on.

Sound decision-making relies on accurate prediction for tangible outcomes ranging from military conflict to disease outbreaks. To improve crowdsourced forecasting accuracy, we developed SAGE, a hybrid forecasting system that combines human and machine generated forecasts. The system provides a platform where users can interact with machine models and thus anchor their judgments on an objective benchmark. The system also aggregates human and machine forecasts weighting both for propinquity and based on assessed skill while adjusting for overconfidence. We present results from the Hybrid Forecasting Competition (HFC)—larger than comparable forecasting tournaments—including 1085 users forecasting 398 real-world forecasting problems over 8 months. …

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a change to standard consumption patterns as consumers began prioritizing health and wellness, working remotely, and made a switch from material-based consumption practices to an experiential-value-based consumption mindset. Additionally, Covid-19 brought economic downturns, loss of jobs, and supply chain issues. Consequently, the activewear market demonstrated unclear results making it necessary to understand trends within the activewear market while also understanding consumer motivations to wear or not to wear activewear during these societal shifts. Unveiling The Dark Side In Smartphone Addiction: Mediation Of Strain And Moderation Of Hedonic Use On Well-Being, Murad Moqbel, Saggi Nevo, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Purpose

The research purpose is to investigate the mediating and moderating relationships between smartphone addiction and well-being (i.e. health-related quality of life).

Design/methodology/approach

A survey of 236 smartphone users was used to test the research model.

Findings

The structural equation modeling analysis results show that smartphone addiction negatively impacts well-being by draining a key personal resource, energy, thus creating strain. The adverse effect of smartphone addiction on users' well-being is found to be more intense when smartphones are used for hedonic purposes.

Research limitations/implications

In this paper, we examine college graduates’ perceptions of entering student loan repayment and how they navigated this process. Findings highlight the importance of helping students make informed borrowing decisions, particularly as they begin repaying their student loan debt. Policy makers wishing to hold institutions accountable for keeping college affordable while enhancing financial aid policy will gain further insight.

Ottawa makes it easy for citizens to weigh in, inviting Canadians to “join the discussion” and submit their “views, reflections and priorities” on the potential FTA through a Global Affairs Canada web page that is clear, inviting, and user-friendly. Under a section titled, “Who should participate?” the first answer given is “individuals.”

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) has been costly for the healthcare system; every 19 minutes, a newborn was diagnosed in 2021. Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT)) for expecting mothers has been shown to decrease costs and length of stay for newborns NAS. This study utilized a literature review and a semi-structured interview. The research showed that medically assisted treatment with methadone or buprenorphine during pregnancy decreased costs, LOS, and severity of symptoms for newborns diagnosed with NAS. The findings showed a positive association between lower costs for the initial stay of infants whose mothers received MAT. MAT during pregnancy has been shown …

Needle Exchange Programs (NEP)s were created to help users exchange used needles for new sterile ones and become aware of treatment and rehabilitation options. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of NEPs and their impact on reducing HIV and Hepatitis C infections in West Virginia and decreasing health care costs for the community. Based on studies conducted on the past implementation of needle exchange programs, it is suggested that there has been evidence that closing these programs can have a broad societal impact on the spread of HIV and hepatitis C and the associated costs. Nurse burnout has been associated with worsened outcomes for nurses, such as increased turnover or quitting and lower job satisfaction. The purpose of this research was to examine Magnet-designation status in U.S. hospitals, specifically shared governance and structural empowerment, and its effects on nurse burnout, nurse turnover, and job satisfaction of nurses. This study utilized a literature review complemented by two semi-structured interviews. The results showed that Magnet hospitals kept lower levels of burnout, better job satisfaction, and less turnover than non-Magnet hospitals, but this was only the case for some studies of Magnet hospitals. This dissertation examines the novel aspect of minority perception and how feeling-like-a-minority influences the consumption of digital interfaces in a service context. The focus on the perception of minority consumers is important given greater emphasis on minority-related issues catalyzed by recent social events. Examining the effects on the choice likelihood for digital interfaces such as service robots is also relevant given the increasing widespread use of such technology. The findings across eight studies including six online studies and two field experiments demonstrate that individuals who perceive themselves as a minority in a service setting show defensive behavior by choosing a …

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) enable ownership and transfer of digital assets using blockchain technology. As a relatively new financial asset class, NFTs lack robust oversight and regulations. These conditions create an environment that is susceptible to fraudulent activity and market manipulation schemes. This study examines the buyer-seller network transactional data from some of the most popular NFT marketplaces (e.g., AtomicHub, OpenSea) to identify and predict fraudulent activity.
