Innovative biotechnology firms (hereafter, biotechs or biotech firms) consider drug development alliances with incumbent pharmaceutical firms (hereafter, pharmas or pharma firms) as a means to access complementary commercialization capabilities, enhance their managerial skillset through close interactions, and maintain financial stability. However, biotechs face challenges in designing and developing alliance contracts that (a) enable them to retain and refine valuable alliance assets and (b) ensure that the alliance makes tangible scientific progress. Research has documented numerous benefits of proactive personality for employees’ job outcomes. However, the success of proactive employees largely depends on their leaders’ empowerment. Extant research has focused on the bright side of proactive personality for inducing empowerment, without considering its risks. We thus have an incomplete understanding of the effects of employees’ proactive personality on empowering leadership. Despite the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) growing emphasis on data analytics in recent years, there is scant research about whether the investment in data analytics accomplishes its objective of enhancing enforcement efficiency. This study examines the effects of the SEC regional offices’ use of data analytics on their investigation outcomes. The utilization of data analytics reduces information processing costs, thereby streamlining the enforcement process as a whole. I find that the SEC’s use of data analytics is associated with a 12% increase in the SEC’s investigation success rate. Such an improvement is greater for firms whose disclosure are more …

Second-hand transactions are gradually becoming an indispensable and significant form of the sharing economy; however, there is limited research on consumer behaviour in second-hand markets in an online environment. This dissertation aims to enrich the research in this area by analysing the impact of the characteristics of buyers, sellers, and products in second-hand markets on consumer purchasing intentions and behaviours. The study uses transaction data from Xianyu, China’s largest C2C second-hand trading platform, to investigate the factors that influence consumers’ choices between first-hand and second-hand trading platforms. Research on customer mistreatment has focused on victims’ perspectives with scant research on third-party observers’ reactions, especially their reactions to customer mistreatment of supervisors. Drawing on the deontic justice theory, this research investigates how and when customer mistreatment of supervisors impacts frontline employees. Using a mixed-method of three studies (experiment, time-lagged survey, field survey) from two countries (the U.S. and China), this research demonstrates the spillover effects of customer mistreatment of supervisors on employee’s service sabotage via moral anger. Study 1 showed that hospitality employees’ moral anger mediated the relationship between customer mistreatment of their supervisors on employees’ service sabotage. …

Understanding how to support creative ideation is an important, yet, elusive, issue for marketing educators. To shed light, this study proposes ideation as a malleable state influenced by “outside-the-brain” resources. By examining venture concept ideation, this study captures the ideation–environment relationship using experience sampling to tap into the daily lives of student entrepreneurs. The findings identify how entrepreneurial ideas emerge from specific external interactions and engagements, which are contextualized using two Japanese conceptualizations of space, ba (場) and ma (間). The results inform both marketing education and entrepreneurial marketing.

It investigates, for one of the first times, the link between two key concepts of brand tribalism and customer-level transformation. By looking closely at the individual-level outcomes of joining brand tribes, this research complements a large body of past research that has mostly emphasized collective nature of tribalism. We study the informational content of factor structures in discrete triangular systems. Factor structures have been employed in a variety of settings in cross sectional and panel data models, and in this paper we attempt to formally quantify their informational content in a bivariate system often employed in the treatment effects literature. Our main findings are that under the factor structures often imposed in the literature, point identification of parameters of interest, such as both the treatment effect and the factor load, is attainable under weaker assumptions than usually required in these systems.
