Assessment center (AC) exercises such as role-plays have established themselves as valuable approaches for obtaining insights into interpersonal behavior, but they are often considered the “Rolls Royce” of personnel assessment due to their high costs. The observation and rating process comprises a substantial part of these costs. In an exploratory case study, we capitalize on recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) by developing NLP-based machine learning (ML) models to investigate the possibility of automatically scoring AC exercises. Investor perceptions of various investment modes can differ based on factors such as experience, earnings, risk tolerance, liquidity preferences, and so on. Understanding the viewpoints of young in- vestors is essential when assessing cryptocurrency investments. This study evaluates the investment decisions of 103 young investors in the cryptocurrency market, using regression and factor analysis for data analysis. The findings indicate that investors have a fundamental understanding of the risks associated with cryptocurrency investments. Recently, shorter assessments have emerged as potential alternatives for more resourceful traditional selection approaches. Multiple, speeded assessments (MSAs) represent such an alternative. In MSAs, candidates participate in a large number of short (a maximum of 5 min), behavioral simulations in which they face a variety of job situations. Initial psychometric evidence on the validity of MSAs is promising. Yet, validity represents only one piece of evidence. It is not known whether MSAs disadvantage specific subgroups, which may inhibit diversity. Digital solutions are increasingly used to address ‘‘wicked problems’’ that are locally embedded but require global approaches. Scaling these solutions internationally is imperative for their success, but to date we know little about this process. Using a qualitative case study methodology, our paper analyzes how four digital solutions driven by the United Nations are built and how they scale internationally. These solutions address wicked problems through artificial intelligence, blockchain, and geospatial mapping, and are embedded in networks of partners which evolve during scaling to create unique ecosystem roles and configurations. In this paper, we characterise the liquidity provision and price discovery roles of dealers and HFTs in the FX spot market during the sample period between 2012 and 2015. We find that they have different responses to adverse market conditions: HFT liquidity provision is less sensitive to spikes in market-wide volatility, while dealer bank liquidity is more robust ahead of scheduled macroeconomic news announcements when adverse selection risk is high. In periods of extreme levels of volatility, such as the `Swiss De-peg' event in our sample, HFTs appear to withdraw almost all liquidity while dealers remain. In normal times, we …

Chapter 1 This paper treats a firm’s capital structure decision as an optimal risk-taking decision based on its risk-return tradeoff prospect. The paper proposes to construct mean-variance ratio forecasts based on return-on-asset histories and shows that the forecasts can explain a large proportion of the cross-sectional company leverage variation. The leverage predicted by the mean-variance ratio forecast maximizes a firm’s relative value. Once the mean-variance ratio forecast is accounted for, contributions from other commonly identified variables become small. Furthermore, some of the additional explained variations do not constitute value-maximizing leverage target variations, but rather variations away from the target.

This study examines the effect of harmonized patent disclosure on the efficiency of firms’ research and development (R&D) investment. Patent disclosure harmonization reduces uncertainty about patent validity and the costs of processing patent information, resulting in better R&D investment decisions than before. Leveraging the introduction of the Global Dossier portal, an initiative to harmonize patent disclosure across multiple jurisdictions, as a natural experiment, this study finds consistent evidence. Results also show that firms reporting in non-English languages benefit more than those reporting in English due to reduced processing costs. In response to this research gap, I developed a novel theoretical framework by combining cultural tightness literature with social information processing theory. ESG ratings are the nexus of sustainable development. Are ongoing retroactive adjustments of ESG scores rewriting or recalibration? Using datasets from 20 random weeks of downloads of Refinitiv ESG universe between 7 October 2021 to 14 December 2022, we find that the positive link between ESG scores or E&S scores to firms’ stock returns existed between 2011 to 2017, disappeared between 2002 to 2011 and attenuated between 2017 to 2021. Using the formation of the International Sustainability Standard Board on 3^rd November 2021 as the external shock event, we further find that the retroactive ESG score adjustments are not …
