A top natural products research scientist from Colombia visited East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy recently to meet with student pharmacists and help demonstrate the drug discovery process.

Dr. Ruben Torrenegra, who was recognized in 2018 by the government of Colombia as one of its top scientists, has helped progress the college’s drug discovery program since 2008 when he partnered with Dr. Victoria Palau, professor emerita of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Palau started her cancer research with plants when she came to ETSU in 2007.

East Tennessee State University’s Center for Cardiovascular Risk Research (CCRR) will host a quarterly meeting of the SmokeFree Tennessee Coalition this month as part of their work to help guide and develop a statewide strategic plan for tobacco control.

In 2022, the Tennessee Department of Health enlisted the ETSU College of Public Health to provide strategic planning services and expert guidance to create a five-year comprehensive tobacco control plan. The plan will be sweeping, serving as a roadmap to prevent tobacco use and create new tobacco control initiatives.

After drawing hundreds of visitors to campus during the last holiday season, East Tennessee State University is preparing to once again open its synthetic ice-skating rink to the community.

The rink is located on the ETSU University Commons, adjacent to the D.P Culp Student Center.

Following ETSU’s annual holiday lights celebration on Monday, Nov. 13, the rink will be open for visitors. That evening, ETSU faculty, staff and students may skate for free with an ETSU ID. Members of the community are welcome to skate; rental rates are available on the skating website.

Moderate-to-extreme levels of drought are gripping much of Tennessee, according to East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Andrew Joyner.

A member of the Department of Geosciences, Joyner is the state’s official climatologist.

The current investigation was designed to examine the relationships among sport fandom, dysfunctional sport fandom, and trait aggression. Although past research had yielded inconsistent results (Wann et al., 1999, 2002), based on more recent research (Castleman et al., 2020) it was hypothesized that fan dysfunction would be a significant positive predictor of trait aggression while sport fandom would be a significant negative predictor of trait aggression. Additionally, we predicated that fan dysfunction would mediate the relationship between sport fandom and trait aggression. Machine learning regression techniques have shown success at feedback control to perform near-optimal pinpoint landings for low fidelity formulations (e.g. 3 degree-of-freedom). Trajectories from these low-fidelity landing formulations have been used in imitation learning techniques to train deep neural network policies to replicate these optimal landings in closed loop. This study details the development of a near-optimal, neural network feedback controller for a 6 degree-of-freedom pinpoint landing system. To model disturbances, the problem is cast as either a multi-phase optimal control problem or a triple single-phase optimal control problem to generate examples of optimal control through the presence of disturbances. …

Fifty-two nursing faculty from ADN (Associate Degree Nursing) and BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programs in the state of Arkansas were surveyed to examine the preparedness resources and interventions to prepare for the Next Generation NCLEX-RN (NGN) and to explore the perceptions of nursing faculty on their readiness to teach critical thinking, clinical judgment, and their competency with NGN item writing. A quantitative cross-sectional descriptive design was used for this study utilizing a self-created survey. Hyper-realistic avatars (HRAs), a form of synthetic media, are custom-created digital embodiments of a human, created by capturing and combining that person’s video and vocal likeness. This is the first known study of the efficacy of videos delivered by hyper-realistic avatars as a communication channel in comparison to videos delivered by their human counterparts. In hotel booking decision-making, consumers must incorporate booking timing and cancellation policy with different price options to deal with uncertainty in the upcoming travel and their utilities that aggregate spending and enjoying on the hotel booking. To fill the gap in the literature that omitted the consumers’ time-inconsistent booking behavior over time and the mechanisms behind booking decisions and timing decisions, this study investigates consumers’ preference between two price options related to cancellation over time and their preferred booking timing. Quasi-hyperbolic discounting model in behavioral economics is applied to explain time-inconsistent behavior by lab experiment.

The Family Safety Program (FSP) is the child welfare program that serves the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, under the tribal Division of Public Health and Human Services. FSP was established in 2015 with around 10 staff members and has grown to about 60 staff, all located in one office in Cherokee, North Carolina.
