The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Real Estate Market In Florida: Insights From Opportunity Recognition Theory, Eren Ozgen, Zachary Murzyn

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

This paper applies Opportunity Recognition Theory to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Florida’s real estate market, highlighting how real estate professionals identified and capitalized on new opportunities. The study analyzes state-level data on migration trends, housing prices, and policy impacts, using a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods to assess market shifts. Key drivers, such as migration, remote work, and the shift to suburban living, are explored. The research shows how Florida’s favorable tax policies and government programs, like the Affordable Housing Coronavirus Relief Initiative, helped real estate professionals adapt. The findings reveal a significant surge in …

Government Debt On Money Growth, Inflation, And Real Gdp Growth, Jesse T. Wright Jan 2024

Government Debt On Money Growth, Inflation, And Real Gdp Growth, Jesse T. Wright

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

This study examines the question: how does government debt affect economic growth over time? The results of this research show that low-income countries use inflation, money growth, and borrowing to manage debt. As a group, high-income countries do not, or perhaps cannot, use any of these methods systematically. Theory indicates that countries may turn to money growth and inflation to manage debt levels, and that this in turn decreases growth of gross domestic product. The results of this paper are significant because they suggest that low-income countries use money growth and inflation as an alternative to taxation while simultaneously borrowing …

Predicting Auditor Dismissals With Shareholder Votes On Auditor Ratification Using Data Mining Tools, Xiaoyan Cheng, Wikil Kwak, Yong Shi, Yi Qu

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

In this paper, we revisit the association between shareholder voting on auditor ratification and subsequent auditor changes using data mining approaches as compared to the traditional logit model. Our logit model shows that shareholder voting on auditor ratification is not associated with subsequent auditor dismissals. Although the logit model is widely used to study the relationship between dichotomous observations and influencing factors, machine learning models simulate the structure of the human brain and generate predictions through training. Our data mining tools show that the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model shows the best Area Under ROC (AUC) curve, considering AUC is …

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah Jan 2024

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Academic clustering occurs when at least 25% of the student athletes on any given team have the same academic major. In and of itself, academic clustering is neither good nor bad, however there is the temptation for students to gravitate toward a major which is perceived to be easier, to seek to associate only with team members, or to enlist in majors which do not align with their career ambitions. Is it for flexibility and scheduling to choose an academic major to have the least impact on their sport? This study examined the athletic program at a Division II four-year …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

The United States is a nation marked by its growing diversity, with ethnically marginalized groups constituting 31% of the population in 2000, 37% in 2012, and projected to reach 50% by 2043 (Carter et al., 2015). In 2018, California had 8,000 registered nurses, with significant ethnic diversity: 40.7% White/Caucasian, 5.5% Black/African American, 11.3% Hispanic/LatinX, 18.7% Filipino, 12.8% Asian/Pacific Islander (excluding Filipino), 3.3% Other, and 7.7% unknown (Spetz et al., 2018). In Los Angeles, the demographics of employed R.N.s were similarly diverse. However, this increase in ethnically marginalized populations presents an ongoing challenge for healthcare organizations, emphasizing the need for sustained …

This study uncovers the perspective on the entrepreneurship education of senior high school students on the university campus. This paper is employed a descriptive research design using a survey ques-tionnaire for the respondents. The survey found that respondents are willing to engage in business be-tween one to 10 years after college. The willingness is due to the encouragement from their parents, independent decision-making, building self-confidence and knowledge, and chasing their dreams. However, there are two significant factors that hinder this, including a need for more business investment and experience. The principal attitudes of an entrepreneur include self-control and creativity. Gaining …

The Identity Harmony Model Of Inclusion: Development And Test Of A New Theory, Anne Brafford Jan 2024

The Identity Harmony Model Of Inclusion: Development And Test Of A New Theory, Anne Brafford

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The concept of inclusion holds unrealized potential as a guiding framework for supporting employees of all identities in achieving their potential at work and improving organizational diversity. The underdevelopment of the concept’s definition, theoretical foundation, measures, and expected outcomes has hindered its positive impact. For example, scholarly attention has focused primarily on social identity theories to define inclusion at the group level, leaving other identity types and theories underexplored. To help address these issues, Article One of this two-article dissertation synthesizes identity, self-determination theory (SDT), and inclusion literature to provide a theoretical basis for the new identity harmony model of …

Building A Cybersecurity Compliance Index Of Capabilities To Explore Strategies And Trends That Enhance Decision Making In Organizations, Juanita Dawson Jan 2024

Building A Cybersecurity Compliance Index Of Capabilities To Explore Strategies And Trends That Enhance Decision Making In Organizations, Juanita Dawson

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Decision-makers and company executives are required to provide authoritative and transparent information on behalf of their organizations. In securing an organization’s assets, decision-makers use the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) as a framework to understand cyber compliance. Although the GCI framework has been used across broad domains both domestically and internationally, the framework is considered too broad to help decision-makers in business settings gain the information needed to address the challenges of cyber compliance influencing an organization’s leadership. A key challenge is that decision-makers must often address a class of problems requiring classes of artifacts or tools, rather than a single …

Confronting Ai-Induced Power Disparity And Emotional Disruption: Expansive Duties Of Broker-Dealers And Investment Advisers, Shuping Li, Wei Shen

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The increasing use of AI models in investment services has raised concerns about ineffective responses, power disparity, and investor harm caused by emotional disruption. Generative AI-driven investment service providers often fail to address consumer issues quickly, guiding customers through superfluous and meaningless verbiage or professional terminology in infinite loops without providing an option to talk with a human customer service staff. Customers who are “stuck” in ineffective or inaccurate responses from AI agents may waste time for investors, make poor investment or trading decisions, and the platform may profit from investor rational decision-making owing to investors’ emotional disruption.

Ceo Marital Status And Corporate Cash Holdings, Ahmed M. Elnahas, Md Noman Hossain, Siamak Javadi Jan 2024

Ceo Marital Status And Corporate Cash Holdings, Ahmed M. Elnahas, Md Noman Hossain, Siamak Javadi

Finance Faculty Publications

We examine the effect of CEO marital status on corporate cash holdings. Consistent with the classical agency framework, we find that firms with single CEOs hold more cash compared to otherwise similar firms with married CEOs and that the excess cash held by single CEOs is significantly discounted by shareholders. Our findings survive a battery of tests to ease endogeneity and selection bias, confirming that results are not simply reflecting innate heterogeneity in preferences. Overall, our findings indicate that a variable outside the common firm- and macro-level determinants, CEO marital status, can significantly influence corporate policies.

Credit Risk Correlation And The Cost Of Bank Loans, Siamak Javadi, Theophilus T. Osah Jan 2024

Credit Risk Correlation And The Cost Of Bank Loans, Siamak Javadi, Theophilus T. Osah

Finance Faculty Publications

Using several approaches to compute firms’ credit risk correlation, we provide robust empirical evidence that lenders charge higher loan spreads to borrowers with higher credit risk correlation. Consistent with the theoretical literature, we find that the credit risk correlation effect is concentrated in investment-grade firms, driven by tightening lending conditions, and more pronounced for firms with higher rollover risk. We also show that banks whose borrowers have higher average credit risk correlation, have greater default risk themselves. Overall, our results indicate that banks view credit risk correlation as an important risk factor.

Three Essays On Financial Information, Disclosures, And Ethics, Ankit Kapur Jan 2024

Three Essays On Financial Information, Disclosures, And Ethics, Ankit Kapur

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation aims to study the impact of different sources of financial information and corporate policies on outcomes that are relevant to researchers, regulators, finance professionals, financial institutions, and investors.

In the first essay, I show that credit rating change announcements disclose a new form of value-relevant information to the market. Issuer credit rating downgrades (upgrades) inform the market about equity underpricing (overpricing). This is reflected by a significant association between a firm’s downgrade (upgrade) and increase (decrease) in the anomalous stock underpricing (overpricing). Furthermore, I show how this mispricing gets corrected over time by analyzing the returns after the …

The second essay examines the effect of employee ownership on a firm's stock price crash risk, while the third essay investigates how the concentration of institutional ownership affects the stock price crash risk.

My first essay investigates the impact of economic policy uncertainty on institutional investors’ holdings of common stocks. Using a large sample of quarterly institutional ownership data from 28 countries/markets between 2000 and 2021, I find …

Supply Chain Centrality, Cyber Risk And Supply Chain It Governance, Long Bui

Accounting Dissertations - Archive

In my dissertation, I examine how a firm's position in the supply chain information network affects its cyber risk exposure and cyber risk management. First, I document that firms that are more central in the supply chain information network have higher cyber risk exposure. Second, the positive association between firm centrality and cyber risk is mitigated by both the IT governance strength of the focal firm and its supply chain partners. Third, the exposure to cyber-attacks through supply chain information networks also has several implications on corporate policies. I find that managers of more central firms are more likely to …
