Does Deviating From Agile Principles Have An Impact On Project Success In North Carolina Higher Education Institutions?, Douglas A. Stanley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Agile software development projects are over three times more likely to succeed than waterfall projects, but 58% of agile-led projects are unable to satisfy the timeline, budget, and customer (Standish Group, 2020). This quantitative correlational study examines if a relationship exists between deviating from the 12 agile principles outlined in the Manifesto for Agile Software Development (Beck et al., 2001) and the perceived level of success for agile software development projects within North Carolina higher education institutions. The general problem addressed by this study is the failure of organizations adhering to agile principles resulting in unsuccessful software development projects. Using …

Board Gender Diversity And Its Impact On Financial Performance And Risk-Taking: A Study Of Listed North American Companies, Ambrose Houphouet
Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)
In today's globalized world, gender diversity is increasingly recognized as vital for companies, yet women remain underrepresented in leadership positions. The lack of representation of women in leadership roles and their possible impact on business performance have led to a greater awareness of gender diversity on corporate boards in recent years. However, men dominate in some fields and the representation of women in decision-making levels is very low and it is unclear whether gender diversity brings any benefits to the company in terms of financial performance and risktaking. Therefore, the study examines the impact of gender diversity on financial performance …

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming professional marketing practices as well as marketing education. This paper employs the science fiction novel “The Space Merchants” by Pohl and Kornbluth as a metaphorical framework for critically examining AI integration in marketing curricula. The authors review existing literature examining the impacts of AI on marketing practices and education. Furthermore, they establish a qualitative methodology analyzing a real-world case study, current applications of AI in marketing education, and discuss ethical frameworks surrounding the use of AI. Utilizing “The Space Merchants” satirical portrayal of consumerism, they reflect on AI’s potential to commodify marketing education, homogenize student …

For development of the theory of service, the focus is on the constructs of service. The theory is expanded to encompass the various business models of service and the service encounter including but not limited to guest satisfaction, service quality, service and technology, service system design, and customer relationship management. Consideration is given to the aspects of the service transaction and what constitutes service, where a labor component of a firm’s product has been transferred to the customer. Lastly, self-service and automation are considered in the context of the user experience. A model of the theory of service is presented.

Book Review: Credible: The Power Of Expert Leaders, Carl L. Tolbert
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Amanda Goodall’s (2023) book Credible: The Power of Expert Leaders argues why expert leaders are needed more now than ever across all organizational domains. Goodall describes the book as a chronicle of the “natural experiment” showcasing failures of nonexperts leading various sized groups and organizations, also citing parallel success by expert leaders (p. 1). The book is divided into eight chapters, starting with the introduction and examining the need for experts, the recruitment and development of experts, and finally, the organizational environment to sustain experts. The introduction begins as a corollary to Nichols’ (2024) work regarding how society no longer …

Cultivating Leadership: Female Leaders In The Royal Bahamas Defense Force, Jason Styles, Lisa Knowles, Kutisha Ebron
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Lessons learned from the impact of COVID-19 have significant implications on crisis management for those serving in the military. Leadership must bear the full brunt of directing subordinates while addressing the crisis at hand. So how do we learn from those volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) situations that arise with no notice? Even more so, those in leadership positions in military branches are instrumental as first responders coming to the national aid of their people. Females continue to enter nontraditional occupational roles, including joining the ranks of leadership in military organizations. This is true in the Royal Bahamas Defense …

Focusing on the value system, this small-scale study explored the change in values and perceptions of a disaster-affected mountain community about natural hazards and its implications for their future lives. Twenty participants from the affected community, including local political activists, religious leaders, teachers, and youth activists, were thoroughly interviewed. Running A Business Like A Biblical Prophet: What Would Isaiah, Hosea, Amos, Or Ezekiel Do?, Hershey H. Friedman, Joshua Krausz
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This paper contends that a toxic corporate culture is the leading cause of unethical behavior in business, and that biblical values taught by the ancient prophets can help transform a firm's culture, inspire employees, and foster a work environment where the paycheck is not the ultimate goal. Scripture could help employees understand that the organization's purpose is to achieve many positive outcomes, such as delivering value to the customer, making a positive difference in society and the world, alleviating poverty and hunger, providing meaningful work, and encouraging innovation and positive change.

Remote Work: How Leaders Impact Employee Wellbeing, Russ Carfagno, Jonas Strömbäck, Cheryl Joyner, Gilbert Franco
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Leaders face many challenges in motivating team members including maintaining remote workers' sense of organizational inclusion. Remote work and flexible working arrangements (FWA) have increased the complexity. Flexible working arrangements (FWA) provide value to employees and may help with work-life balance yet FWA can create employee loneliness and contribute to higher turnover. This quantitative study looked at whether leadership behavior affected remote workers’ loneliness, and the intention to quit. An online survey was conducted through LinkedIn sampling 92 adults who worked remotely at least 20 hours per week in the United States. The study found that the leader-member relationship does …

The “Consistent Chameleon”: Values-Driven Leadership Among Social And Business Leaders Doing Social Entrepreneurship, Esthi Nave, Hagai Katz
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Changing norms in the organizational world drive new hybrid organizational phenomena that reflect an expectation that businesses will be more values-driven and values-driven social organizations will be more businesslike. However, mixing moral values and hard-nosed business creates contradictions. Indeed, research on social/business hybrids has revealed tensions and challenges. Yet, not enough is known about how social entrepreneurs address these inherent contradictions. We explore this question qualitatively through 25 interviews with two types of social/business hybrid organization leaders and their seconds in command: social entrepreneurs who work solely in the social sector (‘exclusive’) and businesspeople who start social ventures (‘dual’).

Leadership In The Heartland: Acting Locally For Positive Global Change, Elizabeth Gingerich
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Threats to both domestic and to international security; the existential threat of climate change; loss – both real and threatened – of democratic governments amid a growing rise of populism and gerrymandering to weaken equitable representation; loss of reproductive rights; mass shootings; and the lack of common-sense gun regulation are all major challenges of today. These issues are being addressed by individuals and organizations alike ─ many of whom are in, or operate from, America’s heartland.

Leadershift Today: Balancing Ego And Altruism, Joan F. Marques
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This article addresses a behavioral dichotomy that seems to be a prerequisite in proper leadership performance in today’s world, especially in organizational settings that cultivate a culture of wellness and reciprocal progress. While the involved concepts - ego and altruism - are generally familiar human traits, the need for a shift from one to the other once leadership has been attained, has not been discussed as such before. This article therefore aims to evoke within leaders the awareness of the need to shift their mindset, and therefore their behavior, from ego-driven to collective-focused once elevated into a leadership position. The …
