Beyond Borders, Beyond Boundaries: How Globalization Affects Real Estate Prices, Ritu Mehlawat

In this comprehensive study, we aim to investigate the impact of Globalisation on house prices globally. Our analysis spans annual data from 42 countries, including OECD and some Non-OECD countries, from 1991 to 2021. Our research underscores the role of Globalisation in shaping house prices, with distinct impacts contingent on the type of Globalisation. Financial globalisation, which primarily encompasses capital flow coupled with enabling regulatory environment, is one of the drivers of house price increases. Conversely, Interpersonal, and Informational globalisation, which mainly involves the physical or virtual proximity of people supported by favourable conditions, has a negative effect on house …

The Effects Of Antitrust Laws On Horizontal Mergers: International Evidence, Chune Young Chung, Iftekhar Hasan, Jihoon Hwang, Incheol Kim

This study examines how antitrust law adoptions affect horizontal merger and acquisition (M&A) outcomes. Using the staggered introduction of competition laws in 20 countries, we find antitrust regulation decreases acquirers’ five-day cumulative abnormal returns surrounding horizontal merger announcements. A decrease in deal value, target book assets, and industry peers' announcement returns are consistent with the market power hypothesis. Exploiting antitrust law adoptions addresses a downward bias to an estimated effect of antitrust enforcement (Baker (2003)). The potential bias from heterogeneous treatment effects does not nullify our results. Overall, antitrust policies seem to deter post-merger monopolistic gains, potentially improving customer welfare.

Purpose: The aim of this chapter is to find out the factors affecting female entrepreneurship in the case of the Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) in entrepreneurship.

Methodology: In this chapter, semi-structured interviews are conducted to reach the final findings of the study.

Findings: Findings entail different six factors that severely affect CSR activities in entrepreneurship in Pakistan. These six factors are the educational system and skills gap, Cultural Mindset and Risk Aversion, Limited Access to Finance, Regulatory and Bureaucratic Hurdles, Political Instability and Security Concerns, and Inadequate Infrastructure. Every factor has its intensity and influence on the entrepreneurial process.

Process mining is an efficient method that can analyze the full population of transactions using the event log of business processes. Conventional rule-based process mining techniques can detect anomalies; however, it tends to trigger a large number of false alarms. To improve the efficiency of anomaly detection using process mining, this study adopts a deep learning-based classification approach to detect anomalies in the traces of event logs. This approach contributes to the literature by proposing a non-rule-based process mining technique based on deep learning. Results demonstrate that the proposed non-rule-based process mining method can help auditors focus on transactional anomalies.

We propose a data-driven methodology to shrink the correlation matrix and, hence, the covariance matrix using reinforcement learning (RL). Our approach does not impose any assumptions on the stock returns and can be applied to any covariance matrix target. It focuses on the special case of the global minimum variance portfolio and investigates the economic value of our methodology by utilizing text-based networks (Hoberg and Phillips, 2016). The portfolio selection problem, hence, boils down to determining the optimal shrinkage policy using RL. A current FASB standard requires management to assess the ability of the entity to continue as a going concern (GC) and disclose any substantial doubt about such. Using contextualized experiments wherein the auditor does not issue a GC opinion for an entity that subsequently fails, we study the effects of management disclosure, increased management disclosure responsibility, and auditor disclosure on auditor blame, a proxy for auditor liability. Consistent with predictions based on the Culpable Control Model, we find (1) management disclosure of substantial doubt increases auditor liability; (2) when management has not disclosed substantial doubt, auditor liability is greater under …

This chapter offers an alternative approach to the public interest theory of central banking.Instead of interpreting the history of central banking as attempts to solve market failures, we suggest that central bank behavior can be best explained by studying the constraints faced by members of various interest groups, including members of the central banks themselves. Instead of looking uniquely at how private decisions in commercial markets shape central banks’ decisions, we argue that central bank behavior is best predicted when applying the tools of economics to politics, i.e., when using Public Choice.

In the U.S. CEO labor market, firms are more likely to hire local CEOs than non-local CEOs. We explore the consequences of this hiring practice on voluntary disclosure of firm financial information in the non-GAAP earnings setting. Using a sample of S&P 1500 firms from 2003 to 2020, we show that firms led by local CEOs are less likely to provide non-GAAP earnings than those led by non-local CEOs. This result holds across a battery of robustness tests, including a placebo test, adopting different matching procedures, an instrumental variable approach, various regression specifications, and alternative samples using CEO turnover events. …

This paper pairs exact dispensary locations with city block level crime data to study the impact of medical cannabis dispensaries on crime in the state of Florida from 2016-2019. Leveraging a Florida state law that requires broadly uniform security provisions across dispensaries, we capture important dispensary heterogeneity by incorporating customer volume and local non-dispensary foot traffic with smartphone geopositional data. We use not-yet-operational dispensary locations as a control group and a geo-spatial difference-in-differences framework and find reductions in larceny, vehicle burglary, and motor vehicle theft following the opening of high-volume dispensaries. This study explores the adaptive reuse of underutilized suburban office buildings into multifamily housing as a response to rising office vacancies and housing shortages. While much attention has been given to urban conversions, suburban transformations remain underexamined despite facing similar challenges. Using CBRE’s National Commercial Office Property Conversion Database (Q1 2024), the research analyzes 15 completed suburban projects (2016–2024), highlighting trends, barriers, and policy considerations. The study emphasizes the importance of flexible zoning, financial incentives, and community engagement to facilitate successful suburban conversions, offering practical insights for developers, planners, and policymakers navigating the evolving real estate landscape.

This article conducts an innovative evaluation of the externality value of rice production and its significant impact on the ecological transformation of grain production. Utilizing the Chinese panel data on rice production from 2000 to 2021, the study applies methods such as the functional value approach, hotspot analysis, and spatial autocorrelation, in conjunction with geodetectors and geographically weighted regression, to assess the externality value of rice production. This paper examines whether and how politicians’ green incentives affect external auditing. Specifically, we investigate the effects of China’s Green Audit of Outgoing Officials (GAOO) policy, which directly links environmental performance to public officials’ promotions. Employing a DID approach, we observe a significant reduction in audit fees for high-polluting firms after the implementation of GAOO. The decrease is stronger among firms located in regions with departing public officials. We identify two channels driving this trend: (1) Auditors rely on public information generated from intensified governmental efforts, thereby economizing on their efforts (i.e., a substitution effect); (2) High-polluting firms improve their …
