V.Y. Mudimbe's Dechirures (1971) has been widely analyzed. Some critics have emphasized the poet's hermetism or intellectualism; others, his themes; still others attempt to reveal the moral lesson that emerges from his poetry. In this article, by focussing on the meaning of the poet's opening declaration ('I would like to cry out against poems''), by weighing quotations from Jean de la Croix, Rembrandt and Mallarme in the text, and by situating this collection in the context of African literature, the author is seeking to demonstrate that Dechirures can be considered as a manifesto for a postnegritude poetry. So many things come together so beautifully in The Good European, it is hard
to imagine not being moved by it. I discuss what kind of book this is and, more specifically, try to explain, in some detail, just how this work is able to achieve the remarkably performative effect that it has on the reader — at least on this reader. Publishing online is an increasingly prevalent means for scholars to test their ideas. But what of its challenges? Focusing on an ill-fated Web site dedicated to the polemic French writer Louis-Ferdinand Céline, and on a proposed hypertextual edition of his most multilinear and multisequential work, this paper asks how to reconcile the need of academics with the bullheadedness of publishers who resist the renegotiation of copyright and the marketplace it (once) enabled.

Pagnol's two-part novel, L'Eau des collines ( 1962), was inspired by his own films, Manon des sources and Ugolin, released ten years before (1952). Much better known are Berri's 1986 films bearing the novel's titles Jean de Florette and Manon des sources.

In this essay I want to examine the architectural and thematic transformations between the three types of "texts:'

I will show that each piece is referring to a different diegetic universe. Pagnol's film is a celebration of provencal verbal activity, ` joie de vivre," and of the Christian notions of redemption and forgiveness. The musical motif of L'Arlesienne …

The question of women's relationship to the literary canon is still pertinent today and is particularly significant for those of us who are both guided by feminist pedagogy and constrained by departmental limitations. How do we give an overview of the novel without either diminishing the importance of certain male novelists or eliminating female writers altogether? The author suggest that a thematic approach in which pairs of texts make explicit two different gender perspectives is useful. African Film: A Dynamic Medium For A High School French Class Cultural Curriculum, Denise Elizabeth Dunn Barstow-Girel

Culture can be an integral part of the French foreign language class when students learn French language and Francophone culture through a content-based approach using the medium of African films. Founded on the pedagogical value of a thematic study of issues aimed at raising linguistic, cultural, and global awareness in adolescent, fourth or fifth year high school French students, I developed this cultural curriculum focused on Francophone African culture. While learning the French language, students will gain knowledge of West African cultures including historical aspects, and the role of the French language in this region.

At the relatively early age of 38, the French poet Olivier Larronde died of an epileptic fit in October 1965. At that time, he had only published two poetic collections, Les Barricades mystérieuses (in 1946) and Rien voilà l'ordre (in 1959), with his third collection, L'Arbre à lettres, only appearing in print in 1966. Despite his limited literary output, Larronde had been considered by Paul Guth in September 1959 as "[u]n des sommets de la poésie Française depuis la guerre" ("Olivier Larronde poète" 114) and was hailed one month after his death by Jean Cau as "l'archange poète de l'après-guerre" …

The rather common use of a preface in African literature raises the question of the poetic value of such a practice. A preface written for the author by an older or recognized writer usually seeks to legitimate or consecrate that work. The author who writes his own preface, however, has other goals in mind and his preface is marked by a certain number of properties which, on a practical level, lend themselves to ambiguous interpretation. The Swiss writer Albert Cohen learned very early to consider French his native language as opposed to the Greco-Venetian dialect spoken by his parents. The dilemma arising from conflicting forces between his Eastern Judaic heritage and his success as a Western Francophone writer caused a great deal of inner turmoil which manifested itself in his writings. This article examines the author's struggles in choosing the French language and underlines the consequences of his decisions.

Less well known because of its size, despite its political integration in the European Union, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is set apart by a practice of spoken French operating within the framework of a complex literary field marked by its national language, a dialect of Germanic origin. The first part of this article deals with socioeconomic and sociolinguistic aspects, relations with France, the teaching of French and questions that relate to writing. The second part details the specifics of a literary production in French that is amazingly varied.

The migratory flows from the former colonial territories have encountered in France a settling process of non-native populations, a growing proportion of whom, born of immigrant parents, have obtained French nationality. Literature, film and music reveal that, with respect to Francophonie, the current situation of these frequently stigmatized minorities overturns the traditional categories and demarcation lines between French and Francophones.

"Masterpieces of Classicism and Romanticism is designed to give students a broad overview of European literature of the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. Besides gaining familiarity with some of the authors of this period, students should learn to put the texts we read into their social and historical contexts and gain a basic familiarity with approaches to literary texts."
