Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This paper analyzes the psychological vulnerability of a wandering and traumatized feminine character in Ken Bugul's novel Cacophonie. It is argued that vulnerability, presented both as a creative and destructive force, is conveyed using an aesthetic of strangeness. Disturbances accumulate on the figurative, event and semantic levels, maintaining an hesitation between supernatural and natural explanations of the narrative process. However, those same troubles also allow a diving into the pain of a lonely spirit. Ultimately, this psychic maze offers a breakaway, given as a consented and redefined fragility. Both born in Port-au-Prince in 1953, the capital of a half-island prone to natural disasters and marked by lasting international isolation, the writers Dany Laferrière and Yanick Lahens have drawn mirrored narrative modes from the fortunes and misfortunes of the Haitian insularity. We will first discuss the chiasmus that can be noted between Douces déroutes (2018) by Yanick Lahens, who has never left her country, and Chronique de la dérive douce (1994) by Dany Laferrière who was deeply marked by his departure for Montreal in 1976. Focusing on the work of Virginie Despentes, Jean Genet, Guy Hocquenghem, and Abdellah Taïa, this dissertation challenges the antisocial turn taken in queer theory, by means of a parallel study of the authors’ geographical and intellectual itineraries. While critics like Leo Bersani and Lee Edelman have suggested that the revolutionary potential in queer identity lies in its opposition to romanticized forms of community, I argue, along with José Esteban Muñoz, that their praising of singularity and negativity is similarly extreme. Alternatively, my study shows how the geographical displacements both experienced and imagined by my primary authors can illuminate the passage …

Made famous with American of French-Canadian origin Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (1957), the road novel genre typically expresses evolving values and beliefs through the lens of the lone adventurer, embarking on journeys that are not only spatial but also social and cultural. The Québécois road novel adapts and reinterprets the American model, moving its protagonists within and without the province to address the deep-seated questions of Québec’s identity and nationalism through confrontations with the past, loss, grief, family, and cultural others. This piece has attempted to select a key passage in Père Goriot, and identify textual elements in order to create a taxonomy which reveals patterns from which possibilities of meaning stem. Balzac creates this scene as a condemnation of the current state of the aristocracy, as well as the greed and ambition of the middle class which further corrupts the values and integrity of the ruling class. Gender neutral and inclusive language has become more prominent around the world with the recognition of non- binary genders. This trend has extended to the French-speaking non-binary community, which has begun to find ways to subvert the gendered constructs of the French language using various strategies that work within the language and the research of linguist Alpheratz who has proposed a neutral grammatical gender. This third gender would function as well as the masculine and feminine genders and serve as an option for francophone non-binary people. In 19th century France, women appeared to be second class citizens. They were often limited in their abilities to have independence and secure their own wealth. This perception of women perhaps justifies why, as Honoré de Balzac’s novels illustrated the realities of French society, he attempted to characterize women’s struggles to obtain control and power in their lives. In his novels The Wild Ass’s Skin (1831), The Lily of the Valley (1835), and Le Père Goriot (1835), Balzac sought to prove how women could improve their lot.

This paper seeks to explore the lasting effects of French Colonialism and Orientalism in the Maghreb through the lens of Abdellah Taïa’s novel Celui qui est digne d’être aimé. In this analysis, I focus on the chapter “Juillet 2005,” in which the protagonist, Ahmed—a young, gay Moroccan man—describes his thirteen-year sexual/romantic relationship with a French man, Emmanuel, and comes to recognize that, within this relationship, he lacks true agency and is still a colonized body. I argue that the effects of Colonialism and Orientalism are made visible through exchanges of power within the images, dialogue, and narration presented in Ahmed …

In 2017, the French Academy published a declaration opposing the official integration of écriture inclusive into the French language for fear that it would put it in “péril mortel.” Specifically, the Academy targeted a newly proposed punctuation, le point milieu, or the middot, that would allow those writing in French to express both the masculine and feminine endings of words with a dot between the two. This addition would disrupt traditional gendered interpretations within the language and make space, not only for the goals of French feminists, but also for visibility of non-binary French-speaking people. Heavy construction equipment owners and managers have few predictive tools that can estimate wear rate of undercarriage track propulsion systems working in various soil types and changing operational conditions. "Vallenthini offers an in-depth study of three historical novels written by the Marquis de Sade towards the end of his life while he was confined at the Charenton mental asylum. Sade started drafting La marquise de Gange in 1806 and published it in 1812, around the same time when he began work on Adélaïde de Brunswick and Histoire secrète d’Isabelle de Bavière, two works that only became available in print in the twentieth century. These novels have generally received limited critical attention."

This thesis focuses on the question of translator roles in literary theory. I characterize these roles between positions that have traditionally been described by literary and philosophical theorists such as Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault. By examining the products of translation (French-language bandes-dessinées and their English translations), and considering critical literary and translation theories, I demonstrate the unique position held by translators and their work through the proposal of what I call the translator-function (modeled after Foucault’s author-function).
