Currently in the world, in the mining and metallurgical industry there is a forced need to reduce the share of processing ores and increase the share of previously accumulated industrial wastes. A phased concept of the use of man-made waste is proposed. At the first stage, the existing industrial wastes are considered as resources and are subject to complete processing with the minimum amount of new waste. At the second stage, the task is to develop non-waste technologies. The example of Uzbekistan (Navoi and Almalyk MMC) shows one of the possible options for the integrated use of industrial waste for …

The article presents the results of sulfur purification research with an inorganic adsorbent released as waste during the production of vanadium pentoxide from spent vanadium catalyst. High purification of liquid sulfur from organic impurities, ash and acids is achieved by treating the molten sulfur with an inorganic adsorbent, followed by separating the purified sulfur by filtration. The silicate base of the spent vanadium catalyst is used as the inorganic sorbent after vanadium pentoxide is removed from it. The consumption of the silicate base of the spent vanadium catalyst after removal of vanadium pentoxide from it is regulated in the range …

Workforce Development Through Online Experiential Learning For Stem Education, Arefeh Mohammadi, Kevin Grosskopf, John Killingsworth
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
The U.S. workforce is increasingly comprised of older adults, women, and minorities who lack basic skills and are unable to acquire these skills through traditional educational and training programs. New approaches are needed to provide effective training to the adult learner and flexible support for nontraditional students who must balance work-life demands with limited educational opportunities. Contextualized teaching and learning (CTL) is a form of experiential learning that blends both basic skills and occupational training together in environments that allow students to relate subject matter to real-world situations. Virtual CTL environments can be created to better engage students, provide immediate …

Development Of A Framework To Support The Effective Adoption Of Bim In The Public Sector: Lessons For Ireland, Shiyao Kuang, Alan Hore, Barry Mcauley, Roger West
Conference papers
Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been formally adopted by many countries with the promise of creating greater economic, social and sustainability benefits. Several authors and institutions have presented alternative BIM policies and tactics which have been adopted by developed countries. However, there is evidence to indicate that BIM adoption theories are not well established and, in particular, the linkage between BIM public sector adoption strategy outcomes and their contribution to achieving Government policy objectives are underdeveloped. This paper will present the outcome of the first phase of a systematic literature review of published studies (including journal papers and noteworthy international …

Computer Vision Machine Learning (CVML) in the application of facial recognition is currently being researched, developed, and deployed across the world. It is of interest to governments, technology companies, and consumers. However, fundamental issues remain related to human rights, error rates, and bias. These issues have the potential to create societal backlash towards the technology which could limit its benefits as well as harm people in the process. To develop facial recognition technology that will be beneficial to society in and beyond the next decade, society must put ethics at the forefront. Drawing on AI4People’s adaption of bioethics for AI, …

This article examines the implications of machine learning algorithms and models, and the significance of their construction when investigating criminal data. It uses machine learning models and tools to store, clean and analyze data that is fed into a machine learning model. This model is then compared to another model to test for accuracy, biases and patterns that are detected in between the experiments. The data was collected from data.seattle.gov and was published by the City of Seattle Data Portal and was accessed on September 17, 2018. This research will be looking into how machine learning models can be used …

Evaluating The Potential For Renewable Energy Technology At Us Ski Resorts, Tyler Farrell
ENGS 86 Independent Projects (AB Students)
The ski industry is one of the most at-risk industries as a result of climate change. Warming temperatures and decreasing snowfall are contributing to a decline in skier visitations, shorter seasons, and higher energy costs. Currently, only 3 of 478 ski resorts in the United States rely on 100% renewable energy sources. The intent of this paper is to understand what the issues and barriers are to renewable energy development at ski resorts, and what technologies are feasible and appropriate for this industry to develop. While the renewable energy industry faces many issues and barriers, the ski industry faces its …

Transient Flow Analysis Of A Closing Blowout Preventer Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd), Daniel Barreca
LSU Master's Theses
Reliability of blowout preventers (BOPs) is crucial for drilling and production operations. Erosion of BOP components and hydrodynamic forces on rams may cause failure of BOP elements to seal the well. Transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of fluids within the wellbore and BOP offer quantitative and qualitative data related to this reliability during the closure of various BOP components. Since limited research has been published in transient CFD simulations of closing BOPs, this thesis discusses challenges and solutions to simulating closing blowout preventers. Single component fluids are simulated through several BOP geometries such as annular preventers, pipe rams, and …

Gaslamp Hotel-Fire Protection/Life Safety Analysis, Garner A. Palenske
Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports
The Gaslamp Hotel was analyzed for fire protection/life safety using two different methodologies; a prescriptive approach and a performance-based approach. Both considered the same features of the building. The prescriptive analyses studied the variation of the building’s fire protection/life safety components from those required by the applicable codes and standards. This included building construction, fire resistance, fire suppression, fire detection, smoke control system, and egress systems. The results of the analysis indicate that the building complies with the requirements of the applicable codes and standards, with three exceptions relating to occupant egress: 1) The first-floor bar area: One exit is …

This report examines the Baylor, Scott & White Medical Center in College Station, TX. This hospital is a 324,070 square feet midrise building of Type I-A construction and Group I-2 occupancy, with a basement and five above-grade floors. Publicly-available, simplified floor plans were obtained from the internet, and a prescriptive- and performance-based analysis was formed around these plans. It should be noted that these online plans may not contain all information and details in that are found in architectural plans, and that assumptions were made in order to ‘fill in the gaps’ and proceed with this report. For example, on …

An Experimental Study On The Impacts Of Using Multiple Pdc Cutters On Rock Cutting Process, Kian Sheikhrezaei
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The ultimate goal in drilling in oil and gas applications is to improve the rate of penetration (ROP) and one important factor that affects the ROP enhancement is Drill Bit. Today, PDC bit plays a significant role in drilling all types of formations. Besides the material development, bit design or a way of cutters arrangements on a bit is a regular challenge for bit designers to improve the bit performance. This concept has been experimentally studied in this work.
Different sets of cutters arrangements containing three PDC cutters on a flat bit profile have been used to conduct a variety …

GaN nanowires are promising for optical and optoelectronic applications because of their waveguiding properties and large optical bandgap. Recent researches have shown superior mechanical properties of GaN nanowires which promises their use in new research areas e.g. nanometrology. In this work, we develop a scalable two-step top-down approach using interferometric lithography as well a bottom-up growth of NWs using MOCVD, to manufacture highly-ordered arrays of nanowires with atomic surface roughness and desired aspect-ratios to be used in nanophotonics and atomic precision metrology and lithography. Using this method, uniform nanowire arrays were achieved over large-areas (~1 mm2) with aspect-ratio …
