In Vitro Studies Of Gold And Gold Silica Nanoparticle Radiosensitization With Kilovoltage X-Rays, Gregory Colarch

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Technological advances in the ability to construct and manipulate nanoscale particles have opened up the possibility of using solid metallic nanoparticles and mixed metal nanoshells as a means to increase dose enhancement and treatment efficacy to tumors. In order for nanoparticles to be an effective form of treatment, they must be delivered to tumors in sufficient concentrations so that there is a dose enhancement factor due to ionizing radiation, as well as being essentially non-toxic to healthy cells. Gold nanoparticles and silica-gold nanoshells fit these requirements. Gold has a high atomic number (Z=79), which gives a larger cross section for …

Alloy Solute Interactions At Grain Boundaries And Nanoscale Interfaces In Copper, Luke Prestowitz

Nanoscale Science & Engineering (discontinued with class year 2014)

To study grain boundary solute interactions we have developed recipes for co-electrodeposition of dilute copper alloys including Cu(Ni) and Cu(Co). Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) was used to analyze the incorporation of solute into the copper film. In addition to the co-electrodeposition process we also used a drive-in diffusion model for Au, Ag, Co, and Ni. Atomic imaging in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) was used to visualize and investigate solute at grain boundaries and interfaces in polygranular copper films. By understanding these interactions and pathways of alloying solutes in copper microstructures, we can more accurately predict alloying behavior …

Porous Co3O4 Hollow Nanospheres Cathode Catalyst For High-Capacity And Long-Cycle Li-Air Batteries, Tong Liu, Na Li, Qing-Chao Liu, Xin-Bo Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, a high specific surface area of porous Co3O4 hollow nanospheres was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal carbonization at 140 °C, followed by calcination using cobalt nitrate hexahydrate (Co(NO3)2·6H2O), hexamethylenetetramine (HMT), sucrose, and sodium citrate (Na3C6H5O7). The porous Co3O4 hollow nanospheres consisted of nanoparticles with high specific surface area of mesoporous structure, and could provide active reaction sites for OER and ORR. When used as lithium-air battery cathode catalyst, the Co3O4/Super P (SP) electrode exhibited excellent cycle performance, resulting in high capacity and long life of lithium-air batteries.

Investigations Of Carbon Nanotube Catalyst Morphology And Behavior With Transmission Electron Microscopy, Sammy M. Saber

Open Access Dissertations

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are materials with significant potential applications due to their desirable mechanical and electronic properties, which can both vary based on their structure. Electronic applications for CNTs are still few and not widely available, mainly due to the difficulty in the control of fabrication. Carbon nanotubes are grown in batches, but despite many years of research from their first discovery in 1991, there are still many unanswered questions regarding how to control the structure of CNTs. This work attempts to bridge some of the gap between question and answer by focusing on the catalyst particle used in common …

Tubular nanomaterials and their composites have been extensively studied in recent years in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and biomedicine. Carbon nanotube is the most commonly studied tubular nanomaterial; however, toxicity and high cost make it less attractive in industry and thus restricts its applications. Halloysite nanotubes, which are available in abundance in the United States as well as in other countries around the world, is a low-cost, unique and versatile aluminosilicate mineral with a chemical formula of Al4Si4O10(OH)8·nH2O. Basically, the halloysite tube diameter is around 50 nm and the length varies with different locations ranging from 0.4-1.5 μm. …

Modeling And Analysis Of A Resonant Nanosystem, Scott L. Calvert 2015 Purdue University

Modeling And Analysis Of A Resonant Nanosystem, Scott L. Calvert

Open Access Theses

The majority of investigations into nanoelectromechanical resonators focus on a single area of the resonator's function. This focus varies from the development of a model for a beam's vibration, to the modeling of electrostatic forces, to a qualitative explanation of experimentally-obtained currents. Despite these efforts, there remains a gap between these works, and the level of sophistication needed to truly design nanoresonant systems for efficient commercial use. Towards this end, a comprehensive system model for both a nanobeam resonator and its related experimental setup is proposed. Furthermore, a simulation arrangement is suggested as a method for facilitating the study of …

Preparation Of Bismuth Telluride Based Thermoelectric Nanomaterials Via Low-Energy Ball Milling And Their Property Characterizations, Christopher Robinson 2015 Purdue University

Preparation Of Bismuth Telluride Based Thermoelectric Nanomaterials Via Low-Energy Ball Milling And Their Property Characterizations, Christopher Robinson

Open Access Theses

Thermoelectric materials are able to convert energy between heat and electricity with no moving parts, making them very appealing for power generation purposes. This is particularly appealing since many forms of energy generation lose energy to waste heat. The Livermore National Laboratory estimates that up to 55% of the energy created in traditional power plants is lost through heat generation [1]. As greenhouse gas emissions become a more important issue, large sources of waste like this will need to be harnessed. ^ Adoption of these materials has been limited due to the cost and efficiency of current technology. Bismuth telluride …

Freezing-Induced Deformation Of Biomaterials In Cryomedicine, Altug Ozcelikkale 2015 School of Mechanical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN

Freezing-Induced Deformation Of Biomaterials In Cryomedicine, Altug Ozcelikkale

Open Access Dissertations

Cryomedicine utilizes low temperature treatments of biological proteins, cells and tissues for cryopreservation, materials processing and cryotherapy. Lack of proper understanding of cryodamage that occurs during these applications remains to be the primary bottleneck for development of successful tissue cryopreservation and cryosurgery procedures. An engineering approach based on a view of biological systems as functional biomaterials can help identify, predict and control the primary cryodamage mechanisms by developing an understanding of underlying freezing-induced biophysical processes. In particular, freezing constitutes the main structural/mechanical origin of cryodamage and results in significant deformation of biomaterials at multiple length scales. Understanding of these freezing-induced …

Structural Patterns At All Scales In A Nonmetallic Chiral Au_133(Sr)_52 Nanoparticle, Chenjie Zeng, Yuxiang Chen, Kristin Kirschbaum, Kannatassen Appavoo, Matthew Y. Sfeir, Rongchao Jin

Publications and Research

Structural ordering is widely present in molecules and materials. However, the organization of molecules on the curved surface of nanoparticles is still the least understood owing to the major limitations of the current surface characterization tools. By the merits of x-ray crystallography, we reveal the structural ordering at all scales in a super robust 133–gold atom nanoparticle protected by 52 thiolate ligands, which is manifested in self-assembled hierarchical patterns starting from the metal core to the interfacial –S–Au–S– ladder-like helical “stripes” and further to the “swirls” of carbon tails. These complex surface patterns have not been observed in the smaller …

Sensitive Detection Of Hydroxyl Radical Based On Silver-Enhanced Gold Nanoparticle Label, Yan Yang, Peng Yu, Xiao-Hua Zhang, Jin-Hua Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

A novel DNA-based electrochemical sensor has been successfully constructed for sensitive detection of hydroxyl radical (·OH) based on the silver-enhanced gold nanoparticle label. Thiolated DNA1 was firstly immobilized on the gold electrode through Au—S bonds. The ·OH generated from Fenton reaction could induce serious oxidative damage of the DNA1 layer on the electrode surface. Then DNA2-functionalized gold nanoparticles (DNA2-AuNPs) were linked on the electrode through the hybridization between DNA2 and undamaged DNA1. Based on the catalytic reduction of silver ion by AuNPs, a silver layer was formed on the surface of AuNPs. The quantitative assay of ·OH was carried out …
