Design Practices Of Preservice Elementary Teachers In An Integrated Engineering And Literature Experience, Kristen Bethke Wendell

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The incorporation of engineering practices and core ideas into the Next Generation Science Standards at the elementary school level provides exciting opportunities but also raises important questions about the preparation of new elementary teachers. Both the teacher education and engineering education communities have a limited literature base on the resources that novice elementary teachers bring to learning and teaching engineering. The purpose of this descriptive exploratory research study was to characterize the design practices used by preservice elementary teachers during an integrated engineering and literature experience. Using a modification of the Design Activity Coding Scheme (Atman et al., 2007), we …

Using Design Hierarchy In A Linear Circuits Class To Illustrate The Scientific Method As A Human Invention, Douglas DeBoer 2014 Dordt College

Using Design Hierarchy In A Linear Circuits Class To Illustrate The Scientific Method As A Human Invention, Douglas Deboer

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

There are various ways to classify academic studies. One might make a “two cultures” division, separating academic studies into the humanities and sciences. Or one might have three divisions: humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Or one might choose to classify academic studies along the lines of traditional academic disciplines such as theology, law, art, music, economics, social studies, languages, political studies, history, psychology, biology, physics, chemistry, math, etc. In our era of global commerce, where does engineering fit in these types of classification? What should engineers study? In a 2008 presidential debate, candidate Barack Obama said that, “Ensuring that …

A Qualitative Study Of Problematic Reasonings Of Undergraduate Electrical Engineering Students In Continuous Time Signals And Systems Courses, Farrah Fayyaz

Open Access Dissertations

Continuous Time Signals and Systems is a core course in the undergraduate electrical engineering curriculum. The topics covered in this course are difficult to learn conceptually because a significant number of topics are abstract, disconnected from a student's daily life, and make extensive use of mathematical modeling and formulas. Engineering educators have put in significant effort to design effective educational strategies for this course; however, there remained a gap in qualitative understanding of students' reasonings associated with difficulties in conceptual learning of the course content. This study aims to fill this gap by identifying problematic reasonings of undergraduate electrical engineering …

Engineering Design: A Cognitive Process Approach, Greg Joseph Strimel 2014 Old Dominion University

Engineering Design: A Cognitive Process Approach, Greg Joseph Strimel

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

The intent of this dissertation was to identify the cognitive processes used by advanced pre-engineering students to solve complex engineering design problems. Students in technology and engineering education classrooms are often taught to use an ideal engineering design process that has been generated mostly by educators and curriculum developers. However, the review of literature showed that it is unclear as to how advanced pre-engineering students cognitively navigate solving a complex and multifaceted problem from beginning to end. Additionally, it was unclear how a student thinks and acts throughout their design process and how this affects the viability of their solution. …

Since 2001, the ETHOS program at UD has grown and changed.

From conceptualization, to implementation, to maturation and national recognition, the program has addressed challenges of academic acceptance, programmatic …

The Use Of A Real Time Online Class Response System To Enhance Classroom Learning, Lulu Sun 2014 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

The Use Of A Real Time Online Class Response System To Enhance Classroom Learning, Lulu Sun

Publications

A real time online class response system was used in class to quickly query student population’s grasp of concepts, engage class participation, check their attendance, and clarify any misconceptions. The biggest challenges for the instructor are time needed to learn the new system, creating effective concept questions, adequate coverage of course material, and ability to respond to instantaneous student feedback. Student challenges include increased confusion if inappropriate wording for the questions, and a negative reaction to the approach in general. Overall this is a highly flexible use of interactive technology for engaging students in any discipline during the class time.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

There has been an increased interest in using technology to relay information over the past 20 years. This interest has been reflected in the way the internet has expanded to incorporate nearly-uncountable numbers of blogs, streaming videos, and discussion forums. Recent research has shown that younger generations of students prefer internet-based platforms such as these to communicate and learn, as they are congruent with a visual style of learning. The present study seeks to fuse the predominantly reflective and intuitive methods found in a traditional lecture with the more visual and active modes of learning to provide a larger range …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The Global Real-Time Assessment Tool for Teaching Enhancement (G-RATE) serves as a pedagogical feedback tool to assess teaching performance in learning environments. This tool is developed based on How People Learn (HPL) framework, which specifically identifies four dimensions which are essential elements of an effective learning environment which are community-centeredness, learner-centeredness, assessment-centeredness and knowledge-centeredness. However, there are no succinct and meaningful representations for frequency and chronological observational data and no interpretation has been made from the collected observation data so far. This study addresses two different methods to observe the patterns from the observation data. First, observation data is compared …

Investigating Attitudes Toward Diversity Among Engineering And Management Students, Xiuli Wang, Brent K. Jesiek, Qin Zhu

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

As the world becomes increasingly globalized, students and professionals face growing challenges related to working across national and cultural boundaries. A related concern for today’s educators and researchers is a lack of effective assessment tools to measure global competency among students in engineering, management, and other professional fields. To begin addressing this gap, two previously validated measures of personal attitudes and perceptions toward diversity were administered to students in multiple professional fields, as it was hypothesized that a positive attitude toward diversity is likely one of the major qualities that makes engineers and other professionals perform more sensitively and effectively …

Understanding And Assessing Engineering Practices In Indian Context, Rudie Desravines, Brent Jesiek, Kavitha Ramane, Qin Zhu

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

For engineers and other technical professionals, working with individuals in a global context is often challenging and requires understanding and openness to other cultures. However, the core of engineering education has historically been focused on mathematical and technical foundations, with a lack of emphasis on broader capabilities such as global competency. Further research is needed to better understand differences in engineering education and practice across national and cultural boundaries, as well as to develop new instructional content and assessment techniques to improve and evaluate the global competency of engineering students and other technical professionals. This project addressed these needs through …

Engineering Leadership Assessment Tool Profile, Karan Sharma, Monique Ross, Monica F. Cox 2014 Purdue University

Engineering Leadership Assessment Tool Profile, Karan Sharma, Monique Ross, Monica F. Cox

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Numerous studies have been conducted stressing the importance of developing the professional skillset of engineers. This need has been further highlighted by the Engineering Criteria 2000 and by the National Academy of Engineers (Kumar and Hsiao, 2007, p. 19). Having realised the need to develop the professional skillset of engineers such as leadership, interpersonal skills, teamwork and communication, universities have started incorporating methods to hone these skills in their courses. However in today’s competitive world, every practice needs to be assessed and measured for accountability and effectiveness. Engineering education is no exception to this rule. There needs to be a …

Organizing A Student Poster Session In An Asee Section Conference, Steve Eugene Watkins, Les Kinsler, Julia L. Morse, Douglas R. Carroll

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Student poster sessions at conferences can be valuable experiences for undergraduate and graduate students and can enrich the conference program for all participants. Student poster presentations beyond the local campus can provide additional experience in professional communication (especially in preparing succinct abstracts and in effective visual design), can prepare students for future conference participations, and can facilitate student-faculty interaction. Several issues exist when including student poster sessions in engineering education conferences. How can the content of posters be related to an engineering education theme? How are communication principles of audience and purpose incorporated into the session guidelines and review process? …
