Recent active shooter events in our nation highlight the need for organizations to have comprehensive violence prevention/intervention plans in place. While much has been done to address violence in the workplace and on college campuses, K-12 schools have been slow to develop a comprehensive violence prevention/intervention curriculum for faculty, staff and students. This project was completed to meet the needs of the Catholic Schools within the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of applying safety best practices from higher education and the workplace to the elementary, middle, and secondary education settings. Teaching has long been considered a stressful profession and is becoming even more stressful because of recent changes in state- and national-level educational policies that govern K-12 education. Teachers who take on additional, extracurricular roles, such as athletic coaching, may be even more prone to stress and burnout. Using occupational socialization theory and role theory, the purpose of this dissertation was to develop a more comprehensive understanding of role stressors, burnout, and resilience among teacher/coaches and non-coaching teachers. The standards serve as the framework within which discussion of Catholic school governance and leadership must now take place.

This article describes the Notre Dame ACE Academies initiative, a university-school partnership program that provides comprehensive support to schools through a unique governance structure. The authors describe how the university’s experience of an earlier partnership initiative informed the development of the Notre Dame ACE Academies model and the rationale for establishing of a new governance model for the program. ACE developed a framework for partnership and collaboration designed to create and sustain a strong Catholic school culture with high academic standards. The closure of nearly half of Catholic elementary schools in the United States since the 1960s has led to the development of many innovative initiatives to stabilize, strengthen, and sustain urban Catholic elementary education. Improving school governance models has been a common agenda of these efforts. This study examined the governance models in use by urban Catholic elementary schools across the United States. Seven major governance models for urban Catholic elementary schools were identified and studied using structured interviews and document analysis. There is a clear understanding that leaders of faith-based educational institutions shape the school community’s culture in ways that assist in faith formation. This implicit and explicit focus on faith formation and an alignment with the broader mission of the Catholic Church is foundational to contemplative leadership (Schuttloffel, 1999, 2008). Contemplative leadership practice presumes that a leader’s character, shaped by her/his communities, life stories, and virtues, is a necessary quality for making decisions that contribute to a school’s Catholic identity. In this article, I take the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council to reassess one of its major products, the declaration Nostra Aetate (“In Our Time”). Following a brief introduction to Nostra Aetate, I describe my experience teaching an undergraduate course on Jewish-Christian Relations built around the document’s recommendations for interfaith dialogue. Through open dialogue about religious beliefs, prejudices, and stereotypes, students made great strides in developing religious literacy, defined by Prothero (2007) as “the ability to understand and use in one’s day-to-day life the basic building blocks of religious traditions” (p. 14). Increasingly, schools have taken on the significant responsibility of nurturing leadership in young people.
