The effect of the cluster randomized Home- and childcare-based Intervention to Promote Physical Activity (HIPPA) intervention on the everyday physical activity (PA) of children between the ages of 4 to 5 years was evaluated. Fourteen childcare centers with 102 children born in 2007 and their families participated in the study. HIPPA was implemented over a single preschool year in seven childcare centers while seven other centers continued their normal care (control group, CG). The PA levels of children were assessed by accelerometers six times every six months during two and a half years of research. Valid PA data were obtained …

Effects Of Court-Specific And Minimalist Footwear On Patellar Tendon Loading During A Maximal Change Of Direction Task, Jonathan Sinclair, Paul John Taylor
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The aim of the current investigation was to examine the effects of court shoes, minimalist, energy return and athletic footwear on the loads experienced by the patellar tendon during a maximal change of direction task. Ten male participants performed maximal change of direction movements in court shoes, minimalist, energy return and athletic footwear. Lower limb kinematics were collected using an 8-camera motion capture system; ground reaction forces were quantified using an embedded force platform. Patellar tendon kinetics were examined via a musculoskeletal modelling approach, and the frictional properties of the footwear were examined using ground reaction force information. The results …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) competitions are determined by the rules of the Code of Points (CoP) which experience changes in each new Olympic Games (OG). One of the WAG CoP rules states that in the Vault Finals, gymnasts need to perform two different vaults. The aim of this study was to determine the quality of the vault performances and the differences between them during Vault Finals at all major competitions held from 2008 to 2016. Numerically higher values of Difficulty Scores, Execution Scores and Final Scores of the first vault compared to the scores of the second vault have been …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The study aim was to evaluate the effect of a 6-week modified workout routine using the modified circuit weight method on selected anthropometric measures, components of physical fitness and physiological indices in competitive basketball players. The study involved 30 basketball players (mean age: 23.4 ±1.8 years). Modified circuit weight method sessions were repeated 3 times a week. Each training session was subdivided into 3 circuits: strength conditioning, exercises to enhance functional fitness and a circuit of sport-specific exercises. Statistically significant differences in values of circumferences and skinfolds were found between pre-test and post-test values, with no statistically significant changes in …

The Diagnostic Value Of Attributes From An Optimum Set Of Variables For Explaining An Outcome In Powerlifting At The Junior Level, Lukasz Plociennik, Igor Rygula, Tomasz Dancewicz, Krzysztof Łukaszuk
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The sport of powerlifting has been extensively studied, but there is lack of information on an optimum list of features that explain performance in 19–20-years-old contestants. Therefore, the study aimed at two research objectives: (1) to determine a minimum set of attributes contributing the most information to an outcome; (2) to develop a biometric model describing the sport result. The study group (n = 30) consisted of athletes (aged 19.38 ±0.84) competing in powerlifting. Two methods for collecting information were used: observation and a diagnostic survey. Analytical methods comprised the multiple regression and Hellwig’s method. An analysis revealed that the …

Training-Related Modulations Of The Respiratory Hypoxic And Hypercapnic Response Sensitivity In Young Elite Endurance Athletes, Tomasz Tomiak, Olena Lusenko, Viktor Mishchenko
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The present study was performed to clarify of training-related modulations of the cardiopulmonary system (CPS) response sensitivity to a hypoxic and hypercapnia stimulus in young endurance athletes. The practical objective was to estimate a possible association between the reduction in sensitivity to respiratory homeostasis shifts and young athletes’ early sports specialization. Twenty-eight young male athletes aged 12.4–17.5 years with experience of strenuous endurance training in kayaking served as the subjects. The impact of strenuous endurance training was estimated in three parts of studies with athletes divided into age groups. Studies have demonstrated that endurance training in kayaking results in a …

Iron Metabolism And Hepcidin Concentration In Teenagers Before And After Exercise In Relation To The Hfe Gene Status, Barbara Kaczorowska-Hac, Marcin Luszczyk, Jedrzej Antosiewicz, Jan Jacek Kaczor
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The aim of the study was to compare the influence of exercise on iron metabolism and hepcidin concentration between carriers of His63Asp mutation (H63D polymorphism) and wild type HFE gene males. Iron is an essential micronutrient required for various biological processes. Systemic iron homeostasis is maintained in a hormone-like negative feedback mechanism by the 25-amino acid peptide hepcidin. Hepcidin controls duodenal iron absorption and iron recycling from senescent erythrocytes using tissue macrophages through the down-regulation of the sole known iron cell exporter, ferroportin-1. Exercise may induce an inflammatory response that leads to changes in iron metabolism. Material and methods: …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The hypothesis to be verified explains why bodily asceticism is excluded, owing to the influence of the ideologist, from the system of public health in the structure of a liberal cratocracy, in which reason is the good of the authority for its own sake. In the structure of national society, the system of bodily asceticism is raised to the status of community good. Despite the blocking of the connectivity of the system of bodily asceticism to the social structure, academic gymnasions survived the collapse of the state. Each of them independently excused itself with the idealess reason of the market …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Obesity has become a major health challenge in children. Fundamental movement skills(FMS) are suggested to have an important role for being physically active and decreasing the risk of obesity. This systematic review aimed to give an overview of studies providing evidence for a relationship between FMS and the weight status in children. A systematic search of five electronic databases (MEDLINE (PubMed), SportDiscus, ERIC, PsycInfo and SCOPUS) was conducted in January 2015. Studies examining associations between FMS and weight status in children aged 3–12 years were included. The final sample included 12 cross-sectional studies. Seven studies found statistically significant inverse association …

Pedagogical and educational institutions play an important role in health education. The proposed systemic principles should account for biological, environmental and cultural factors that determine the health of children and adolescents. Young people’s individual needs should constitute the framework of educational policy in the prevention of obesity and overweight. An analysis of health education practice in the Polish educational system indicates that the adopted measures, their practical applications and educational goals are adequate. Despite the above, the proposed systemic solutions are not always deployed or correctly implemented by the responsible institutions at various levels of local or social governance. The …

The article explores two issues – perfectionism and attitudes toward doping in sport. The study was aimed at verifying the thesis that perfectionism in its adaptive and maladaptive forms may have an effect on athletes’ attitudes toward doping. The study sample consisted of 110 athletes (43 females and 67 males). To test perfectionism the Adaptive and Maladaptive Perfectionism Questionnaire developed by Szczucka was used and to measure attitudes toward doping-free sport and anti-doping policies a questionnaire worked out by one of the authors. The effect of perfectionism on doping attitudes was measured. There were significant differences in attitudes toward controls …
