Diversity and multiculturalism have become a worldwide reality of nations and organizations in the face of globalization. UAE schools have become multicultural in nature, embracing principals and teachers from diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and citizenship statuses. The purpose of this study was to examine whether principals’ cultural intelligence (CQ) and cultural leadership practices have direct and indirect influence on teachers’ perceived diversity climate and organizational identification. Whether principals’ and teachers’ citizenship statuses are differentiating factors …

The Permanence Of Racism In Tennessee Public Schools, Jarral Yokley 2023 University of Missouri-St. Louis

The Permanence Of Racism In Tennessee Public Schools, Jarral Yokley

Dissertations

The qualitative case study exposed the permanence of racism beginning in the antebellum public schools of Nashville and continued in the current actions in the Tennessee legislature with the expulsion of two Black male legislators. Critical race theory is used as the main descriptor for the actions of White politicians and legislators in Tennessee who continue the oppressive treatment of Black people in the state of Tennessee.

White members of the Tennessee legislature have attempted to strategically continue white supremacy in their decision to display a depiction of one of the most deplorable, racists in the history of the state …

An Inquiry Into Hope And Imagination In Jesuit Education: Ignatian Design Thinking As A Lens For Exploration, Stacy Neier Beran, Patrick M. Green 2023 Loyola University Chicago

An Inquiry Into Hope And Imagination In Jesuit Education: Ignatian Design Thinking As A Lens For Exploration, Stacy Neier Beran, Patrick M. Green

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Hope and imagination are foundational to a Jesuit education, and as central tenets, inform teaching and learning through Ignatian pedagogy. The authors explore hope and imagination in the Jesuit context through the lens of scholar-practitioner inquiry, drawing from the local context and practice of an Ignatian design thinking course as a source of knowledge. This inquiry approach is rooted in practice-based research, and situates scholarly exploration through lines of inquiry and problems of practice, specifically exploring how design thinking fosters curiosity and creates space for teaching imagination and hope. The authors draw on their teaching experiences, course design, and professional …

The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans 2023 Columbia University

The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans

Navigating Careers in Higher Education Series

The Challenges of Minoritized Contingent Faculty in Higher Education offers a probing and unvarnished look at the employment challenges of these faculty members in four-year institutions. With dramatic shifts in the faculty workforce and nearly three-quarters of instructional positions in United States institutions now off the tenure track, contingent faculty have become the essential, frontline workers of higher education. Remarkably little research attention has focused on the experiences of minoritized contingent faculty in this new academic underclass. Based on in-depth interviews coupled with extensive research, the book highlights the double marginalization that can occur due to secondary employment status in …

Are The Housing Staff Alright? A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Examination Of The Experiences Of On-Campus Student Housing Professionals Through The Covid-19 Pandemic, Megan J. Chibanga

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

College and university housing professionals served a role they were generally underprepared for as long-term crisis managers during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted and shifted higher education operating structures on a grand scale, and housing staff were asked to continue operating on-campus housing facilities throughout the ever-changing response to COVID-19. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of housing professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the collective experiences of 21 participants three major threads emerged: comfort in the unknown, a need for connection and community, and relentless resilience. Each of these …

A Phenomenological Study Of Social Networking Sites And Their Influence On The Collegiate Expectations And Experiences Of Generation Z, Kellen A. Washington 2023 Arkansas State University

A Phenomenological Study Of Social Networking Sites And Their Influence On The Collegiate Expectations And Experiences Of Generation Z, Kellen A. Washington

Student Theses and Dissertations

Generation Z will be the traditional-aged college student for the next 12 years (Chatzoglou et al., 2020). It is imperative that colleges and universities understand who these students are, what they are expecting from college, and what influences their expectations of the collegiate experience. Understanding Generation Z and their wants and needs is important for student retention, especially now as the college-age population declines (Copley & Douthett, 2020; Kline, 2019). One of the hallmarks of Generation Z is their reliance on technology which has been a part of their lives since birth (McKain & Grise, 2019; Selingo, 2021; Villa et …

Impact Of Work Based Learning On Employability Skills Of High School Students, Kelli Dawn McGaha-Martin 2023 Arkansas State University

Impact Of Work Based Learning On Employability Skills Of High School Students, Kelli Dawn Mcgaha-Martin

Student Theses and Dissertations

Within Career and Technical Education (CTE), some students have the opportunity to participate in Work Based Learning (WBL) as a third-level course to achieve CTE completer status. Participation in WBL has proposed benefits beyond students learning technical skills to the more substantial development of employability skills. Although employers indicate that there is an employability skills gap in employees, information on how employability skills are developed in high school WBL environments is limited, which is the problem addressed through this research. A multi-site case study was conducted to address the purpose of exploring the WBL environment’s impact on the development of …

A Phenomenological Study Of Successful Superintendent Retention In A North-Central New Mexico School District, Adán G. Delgado 2023 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

A Phenomenological Study Of Successful Superintendent Retention In A North-Central New Mexico School District, Adán G. Delgado

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Superintendent of Schools is uniquely critical in a school district due to its tremendous effect on the operational and cultural bearing of the organization (Myers, 2011). Superintendent turnover can hinder district reform and improvement (Grissom & Andersen, 2012; Marzano, 2006). The United States and New Mexico struggle with superintendent retention and northern New Mexico is especially plagued with short superintendent tenure (Grissom & Andersen, 2012; NMPED Stat Books, 2021; Sawchuck, 2022). In this study, I investigated the initial selection and subsequent interactions and relationships between school board members and superintendents. Using a phenomenological approach, I interviewed two superintendents and four …
