Higher Learning Research Communications

We are pleased to publish our second special issue (Volume 12, Issue 0) of Higher Learning Research Communications (HLRC) related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the first special issue (Volume 11, Issue 0), authors examined the experiences of the transition to emergency remote teaching by institutions of higher education globally. In the current special issue, authors examine, from the perspectives of different countries, the continued impact of the pandemic. Each article provides some indications of how the pandemic can impact higher education as it transitions back to models that include face-to-face learning.

Physical To Cyber: A Case Study Of The Print And Digital Literacy Of Burgeoning Older Adult Learners, Laura Elizabeth Williams

This intrinsic single case study explored the ways in which two older adult burgeoning literacy learners in a capital city in the U.S. Gulf South utilized the skills of print literacy and digital literacy both together and apart. This study was an investigation of print and digital literacy, individually and combined, in order to examine the way older adult burgeoning literacy learners used one kind of literacy (print) to develop the other (digital). Using semi-structured interviews, observations, and literacy journals, participants’ perceptions were explored. Findings included that fully literate older adults used their literacy to enact and maintain social connections, …

Background Residents and fellows play a vital role in educating medical students and junior residents. Studies report that residents desire to improve teaching but lack confidence and formal training.

Aims: This study discusses changes in residents’ teaching confidence as they complete an eight-month program developed to provide them with skills to teach effectively. Effectiveness of the program include measures of residents’ teacher efficacy and self-reported behavior changes in teaching practices and overall program value.

The concepts of “mindful consumption” and “sustainability” became indispensable parts of both academia and business life. Based upon an initial research conducted in 2012, this research aims to understand and compare the change within a decade in MBA curricula in terms of mindfulness content inclusion as well as sustainability and ecological orientation. The results compare the evolution of the integration of concepts to curricula since 2012 through the official websites of the top 100 MBA schools of the Financial Times Global Ranking in both 2012 and 2022. This poster session represents an ethnographic study of a hybrid foreign language class, focusing on the challenges created by students’ multiliteracy practices. Students range from high schoolers enrolled in dual programs, to heritage speakers, to adults who look for a career change. Reaching such a diverse group of students can be challenging but challenges create Third Spaces where learning is expanded and literacies improved (Smagorinsky, 2021; Gutierrez, 2011; Hulme et al., 2009; Lynch, 2008).

Many adult students arrive at the doors of higher education institutions with an assortment of prior successes and failures in the educational systems. They have individual and family histories that can be both a strength and a source of trauma. Students report finding a home or place where they confront or challenge prior perceptions about their educational strengths and barriers. When students recognize their potential via successes in an adult-focused cohort learning, they frequently report experiencing a renewal or resurgence of personal power and self-efficacy.

The development and examples of key program assessments (KPAs) are shared. Dr. Boyd opens the presentation. Dr. Shannon (B.S. Sports Management) begins by providing an overview of aligning program and ORU outcomes. Prof. Locke (B.S. Mathematics) walks through how current assignments were chosen to be used as key program assessments and then how the rubrics were revised to improve alignment. Dr. Valentz (B.S. Nursing) discusses how to improve the foundational alignment between program outcomes and the criterion (rubric row headings) used to measure them. Pakistan being a young country is struggling to provide employment opportunities. However, entrepreneurship is a perceived strategy for reducing unemployment. The trend of entrepreneurship is also emerging among university students. Thus, the ratio of entrepreneurial intention and start-ups is also increasing among university students and graduates. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role of personality traits in the entrepreneurial intentions of young entrepreneurs. Considering this, qualitative methodology was employed with the case study as the research design. A single case of a university with three different departments was taken.
