The current studies used the Perceptions of Dating Infidelity Scale (PDIS), which identifies attitudes toward three types of behaviors indicative of cheating: Ambiguous, Deceptive, and Explicit behaviors, to predict actual infidelity behaviors. Participants reported their attitude toward these behaviors and then reported their willingness to engage in these behaviors with a hypothetical target (Study 1) and reported actually engaging in these behaviors over the course of one month (Study 2). Study 1 showed that attitudes for Ambiguous and Deceptive behaviors significantly predict a willingness to engage in these behaviors with a hypothetical target. Study 2 showed that attitudes toward Ambiguous …

Jana Hackathorn

Aspects of one‟s sexual behaviors, such as expectations, frequency, and types of behaviors affect one‟s sexual satisfaction. The current study investigated both sexual and non-sexual variables associated with sexual satisfaction.  Participants were asked to report the frequency of various specific sexual behaviors within their marital relationship, as well as non-sexual aspects of their lives such as religiosity and faith development.  Results indicated that certain specific sexual behaviors, such as kissing, oral sex, and engaging in sexual conversations, were more likely to be related to greater sexual satisfaction. Additionally, gender differences were found in some correlates of sexual satisfaction.

Social Network Media Exposure And Adolescent Eating Pathology In Fiji, R H. Striegel, A E. Becker, K E. Fay, J Agnew-Blais, A N. Khan, S E. Gilman 2010 Wesleyan University

Social Network Media Exposure And Adolescent Eating Pathology In Fiji, R H. Striegel, A E. Becker, K E. Fay, J Agnew-Blais, A N. Khan, S E. Gilman

Ruth Striegel Weissman

BACKGROUND:

Mass media exposure has been associated with an increased risk of eating pathology. It is unknown whether indirect media exposure--such as the proliferation of media exposure in an individual's social network--is also associated with eating disorders.

AIMS:

To test hypotheses that both individual (direct) and social network (indirect) mass media exposures were associated with eating pathology in Fiji.

METHOD:

We assessed several kinds of mass media exposure, media influence, cultural orientation and eating pathology by self-report among adolescent female ethnic Fijians (n=523). We fitted a series of multiple regression models of eating pathology, assessed by the Eating Disorder Examination …

Modulation Of Methylphenidate Effects On Wheel Running And Acoustic Startle By Food Deprivation In Commercially And Selectively Bred Rats., I. B. McLaughlin, C. D. Chapman, Nancy K. Dess 2010 Occidental College

Modulation Of Methylphenidate Effects On Wheel Running And Acoustic Startle By Food Deprivation In Commercially And Selectively Bred Rats., I. B. Mclaughlin, C. D. Chapman, Nancy K. Dess

Nancy K Dess

Behavioral effects of the same dose of the same drug can vary in degree and direction between and within individuals. The present study examines behavioral base rates, feeding status, and dispositional differences as sources of inter- and intra-individual heterogeneity in drug response. Modulation of the effects of methylphenidate (MPD) on wheel running and acoustic startle by food deprivation was examined in three experiments. Freely fed or food deprived Harlan Sprague-Dawley rats (running study) or rats selectively bred for low (LoS) and high (HiS) saccharin intake (running and startle studies) were given MPD (10 mg/kg) or saline before testing. Overall drug …

Predicting Adolescents’ Future Intentions To Seek Help For Mental Health Problems., Coralie J. Wilson 2010 University of Wollongong

Predicting Adolescents’ Future Intentions To Seek Help For Mental Health Problems., Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

This study examined whether high school students’ current symptoms of general psychological distress, self-rated social problem-solving skills, and recent help-seeking experiences predict their future intentions to seek help for a mental health problem. At Time 1, 98 high school students, aged 12-17 years, completed the study self-report survey that included measures of psychological distress, social problem-solving skill, and recent help-seeking behaviour. At Time 2, three weeks later, the same students completed measures of help-seeking intentions. Students with more severe levels of distress symptoms at Time 1 had lower intentions to seek help for a mental health problem at Time 2. …

“Socializing” Achievement Goal Theory: The Need For Social Goals, Ronnel B. King 2010 The University of Hong Kong

“Socializing” Achievement Goal Theory: The Need For Social Goals, Ronnel B. King

Ronnel B King

Cultures shape the types of goals that students pursue in the classroom. However, research in achievement goal theory seems to have neglected this cultural aspect with its exclusive focus on individualistically-based goals such as mastery and performance goals. This emphasis on mastery and performance goals may reflect Western individualist psychological thinking. Thus, social goals, which may be more salient in collectivist cultures, are relatively neglected. There is a dearth of studies investigating the role of social goals in academic motivation, and the few studies that did explore them are somewhat problematic. This paper reviews research done within the achievement goal …

Sparkle Of Existential Time As A Sanctuary In Marital Counselling, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D. 2010 Universiti Putra Malaysia

Sparkle Of Existential Time As A Sanctuary In Marital Counselling, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.

Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.

Nowadays, Existential thought is considered to be a practical approach among psychologists and counsellors . Nevertheless, what seems to be ignored is paying thoughtful attention to all dimensions of Existential thought which is an essential matter among counsellors and psychologists. Moreover, some issues in Existential thought such as time are disregarded among marital counsellors as well as individual counsellors. The goal of this article is to allocate exhausting existential time to benefit marital counsellors. Findings show that existential time has full potential to be applied for marital counselling. Furthermore, review of the related literature demonstrates that there is not enough …

Early Access And Help Seeking: Practice Implications And New Initiatives., Coralie J. Wilson 2010 University of Wollongong

Early Access And Help Seeking: Practice Implications And New Initiatives., Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

Seeking appropriate help for early signs and symptoms of psychological distress can reduce the long-term impact of many mental disorders. This article describes practice implications and new initiatives for promoting early access and help-seeking among young people. Relevant help-seeking research is reviewed, and prominent help-seeking barriers are discussed. Prominent barriers for young people include: incomplete mental health and emotional literacy, beliefs about having little need for help versus having a need for autonomy, and the process of help-negation for different symptoms of psychological distress. To improve early access to appropriate help and mental health services, barriers that can be reduced, …

Contextual Primes, Trust And Negotiators’ Reactions To A Crisis, Daniel Druckman, Mara Olekalns 2010 George Mason University

Contextual Primes, Trust And Negotiators’ Reactions To A Crisis, Daniel Druckman, Mara Olekalns

Mara Olekalns

Using a simulated bilateral negotiation over several security issues, we test the relationship between crises and turning points in negotiation. We explore how variations in the negotiation context influence negotiators’ reactions to an identical event – a crisis – during the negotiation. Negotiators were primed to focus on one of three features of the negotiating context (transaction costs, mutual dependence, shared identity) which we hypothesized would influence crisis-turning point relationship. In their roles as national representatives, negotiators in each condition were presented with a crisis and asked to decide whether to reach an immediate agreement, continue negotiating, or re-frame the …

Rat Pup Social Motivation: A Critical Component Of Early Psychological Development, Howard C. Cromwell 2010 Bowling Green State University

Rat Pup Social Motivation: A Critical Component Of Early Psychological Development, Howard C. Cromwell

Howard Casey Cromwell

Examining the role of the offspring in early social dynamics is especially difficult. Human developmental psychology has found infant behavior to be a vital part of the early environmental setting. In the rodent model, the different ways that a rodent neonate or pup can influence social dynamics are not well known. Typically, litters of neonates or pups offer complex social interactions dominated by behavior seemingly initiated and maintained by the primary caregiver (e.g., the dam). Despite this strong role for the caregiver, the young most likely influence the litter dynamics in many powerful ways including communication signals, discrimination abilities and …

Ethnic Differences In Food Sources Of Vitamin D In Adolescent American Girls: The National Heart, Lung, And Blood Institute Growth And Health Study, R H. Striegel, L V. Van Horn, R Bausermann, S Affenito, D Thompson, D Franko, A Albertson 2010 Wesleyan University

Ethnic Differences In Food Sources Of Vitamin D In Adolescent American Girls: The National Heart, Lung, And Blood Institute Growth And Health Study, R H. Striegel, L V. Van Horn, R Bausermann, S Affenito, D Thompson, D Franko, A Albertson

Ruth Striegel Weissman

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study (NGHS) was a 10-year longitudinal study of the development of obesity and CVD risk factors (including dietary, psychosocial, environmental and others) in 2,379 African-American and white females who were 9 or 10 years old at study entry. Current studies have documented a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency among healthy children, adolescents and young adults in the United States, especially among low-income, black and Hispanic children (defined as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations of ≤ 20 ng/mL). Although the main source of vitamin D is direct exposure of the skin …

Clarifying Boundaries Of Binge Eating Disorder And Psychiatric Comorbidity: A Latent Structure Analysis, R H. Striegel, A Hilbert, K M. Pike, D E. Wilfley, C G. Fairburn, F A. Dohm 2010 Wesleyan University

Clarifying Boundaries Of Binge Eating Disorder And Psychiatric Comorbidity: A Latent Structure Analysis, R H. Striegel, A Hilbert, K M. Pike, D E. Wilfley, C G. Fairburn, F A. Dohm

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Binge eating disorder (BED) presents with substantial psychiatric comorbidity. This latent structure analysis sought to delineate boundaries of BED given its comorbidity with affective and anxiety disorders. A population-based sample of 151 women with BED, 102 women with affective or anxiety disorders, and 259 women without psychiatric disorders was assessed with clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires. Taxometric analyses were conducted using DSM-IV criteria of BED and of affective and anxiety disorders. The results showed a taxonic structure of BED and of affective and anxiety disorders. Both taxa co-occurred at an above-chance level, but also presented independently with twice-as-large probabilities. Within …
