CAR T cell therapy was first proven effective in 20131 for the treatment of certain cancer s . However, its widespread adoption is still hindered by side effects like immune effector cell associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS). Current research aims to better predict, diagnose, and treat ICANS so that CAR T cell therapy can be more widely applied. Although prior studies have attempted to identify an objective biomarker of ICANS2 , current practice relies on clinical assessment to diagnose ICANS. We hypothesize that qualitative features of the EEG may be utilized to develop a physiological grading system of the …

Development of the central nervous system, the brain and the spinal cord, starts initially with the formation of the neural tube. This vital process starts as a sheet of cells which then folds into a cylindrical structure in the early stages of embryo development (Fig1). Defects in the formation of the neural tube can lead to permanent disabilities in babies after birth. This is important to understand as current statistics show that approximately 300,000 babies are born annually with neural tube defects. (NTDs). In addition to NTDs there are many other dangerous birth defects that are important to understand as …

Lichens are one of the world’s ubiquitous group of organisms. They have been documented from frigid tundras to arid deserts. While some species are known to be particularly hardy and flexible in their habitats, many species are linked to specific growing conditions. As the global climate changes, the geographical range for different growing conditions shifts. Economic trade and human travel provide new opportunities for species to access new locations that are beginning to develop habitable conditions. Xanthoria parietina has been observed in the Great Basin (a region outside of its typical coastal distribution) found in newly built horticultural landscapes. Individuals …

Salicylic acid (SA) and N-hydroxypipecolic acid (NHP) are two central plant immune signals involved in both resistance at local sites of pathogen infection (basal resistance) and at distal uninfected sites after primary infection (systemic acquired resistance). Major discoveries and advances have led to deeper understanding of their biosynthesis and signaling during plant defense responses. In addition to their well-defined roles in immunity, recent research is emerging on their direct mechanistic impacts on plant growth and development. In this review, we will first provide an overview of how SA and NHP regulate local and systemic immune responses in plants. We …

Caddisflies are a highly diverse order of aquatic insects. As eggs, larvae, and pupae, they occupy freshwater habitats, while as adults, they are generally aerial and terrestrial1. Such varied environments call for a flexible and complex visual system. Visual systems are controlled by light-sensing molecules called opsins, which are categorized by the wavelength of light they are most sensitive to2. In insects, these categories are:
- Long wavelength (LW)
- Short wavelength (SW)
- Ultraviolet wavelength (UV)
Adaptive duplication of opsin genes is the primary mechanism of evolution that allows for greater visual capacity3. While opsins have …

Humectants are an important class of compounds that attract and retain water within a cell. When mixed with water to create wetting solutions, humectants can prevent desiccation of cadaveric specimens. Recognizing a relative scarcity of comparative studies analyzing the effects of various wetting solutions on post preservation cadaveric maintenance, we utilized wet-dry analysis in order to compare the effects of four common humectants on water retention in human skin tissue. We created a concentration gradient for each humectant to identify the optimal concentrations of each compound for water retention, after which we compared water retention in tissue at the optimal …

Quercus gambelii Nutt. (Gambel oak) is an ecologically important species that provides food and shelter for many wildlife species. In areas impacted by disturbance, Q. gambelii is often the first woody perennial species to reestablish (USFS, 2016). The use of this species could be beneficial for the reclamation of mine sites in mountain shrubland areas of the western United States. However, due to the recalcitrant nature of these acorns (i.e. seeds that do not survive after drying or freezing), viability can quickly be lost after the acorns are harvested. Additionally, invasive weevils (Family Curculionidae) infest and kill oak acorns. These …

As incidence rates of chronic illnesses continue to increase, many pharmacological and lifestyle interventions have been undertaken to pinpoint effective treatment and prevention tools to combat them. One such intervention of recent interest includes the use of fasting. Ketones, a product of fat breakdown, are thought to be a key player in some of the health benefits achieved through fasting. Despite potential benefits, adhering to a fasting regimen can be difficult. While it is generally well-tolerated, some experience negative side effects,² indicating potential issues with long-term adherence. Heilbronn et al. suggest that a small meal on fasting days may be …

Djulis (Chenopodium formosanum Koidz.) is a semi-domesticated Taiwanese native crop. It is a BCD-genome hexaploid (2n = 6x = 54) relative of the Andean-native allotetraploid (AABB) quinoa (C. quinoa). Djulis has been grown in a relatively small area by aboriginal Taiwanese, who use it primarily as a fermentation starter to produce ritual alcoholic beverages. Djulis’ seed protein, like that of quinoa, is complete in terms of its human dietary essential amino acid profile; the seed also offers a wide variety of nutritionally important vitamins and minerals. These nutritional attributes have attracted international attention as a novel, healthy grain option. We …

T cells serve a key role in the immunological response in the adaptive system. Different receptors present on the T cell have certain roles and are able to either inhibit or stimulate signaling which consequently regulates the function and metabolism of the cell. CD5 is an inhibitory co receptor expressed on the surface of T cells known to regulate thymocyte selection and TCR signaling . Our goal is to better understand the effects of CD5 regulation in metabolism. Using metabolic flux assays, we found that CD5KO naïve T cells have increased glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration in comparison to wild type …
Reviewing The Effects Of Human-Induced Limb Damage In Crabs, Jacob B. Spencer, Blaine D. Griffen
Reviewing The Effects Of Human-Induced Limb Damage In Crabs, Jacob B. Spencer, Blaine D. Griffen
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2022
Limb damage in crabs comes in various forms, each with unique consequences. Brachyuran crabs shed limbs as a defensive reflex, with natural breakage occurring along a plane, otherwise known as autotomy. In addition to autotomy, crabs commonly lose limbs due to fishing practices such as declawing. In many areas, taking the limbs and releasing the crab is a common practice. The logic is that the populations won’t decline if the crab is put back. Other practices such as nicking, or cutting the main claw tendon, are used to restrict claw movement. Various effects of these fishery practices have been documented …

Morphological Changes Of The Asian Shore Crab Across Latitudes, Ainslee Mcmullin, Blaine D. Griffen
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2022
The Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus , is an invasive species that has rapidly spread across the Eastern United States coastline. First observed in North America in 1988, its range currently extends from Maine to North Carolina. H. sanguineus has adapted very well to this region and has displaced several native species as the dominant crab in rocky intertidal habitats. Although the Asian shore crab’s biology and interactions with native species has been well studied, larger scale impacts (economic, potential further spread, community ecology, etc.) are under researched. We collected specimen samples of H. sanguineus throughout its entire East coast …

There is a strong link between physical activity and health. Historically, large-scale epidemiological studies have used self-report surveys to capture physical activity measures (eg, type and intensity). In the past 20–30 years, large cohort studies have increasingly adopted devices, such as pedometers, accelerometers, and consumer-marketed activity trackers, to measure physical activity. Device-based physical activity measures alleviate some limitations of self-reporting by increasing measurement objectivity and accuracy. Additionally, device-based measures often show stronger associations with health outcomes than do self-reported measures, showcasing their value in understanding how physical activity affects health. Unlike self-report, device-based measures can capture steps, which are easily …

Faculty Research 2022
The assembled and annotated genomes for 16 inbred mouse strains (Lilue et al., Nat Genet 50:1574-1583, 2018) and two wild-derived strains (CAROLI/EiJ and PAHARI/EiJ) (Thybert et al., Genome Res 28:448-459, 2018) are valuable resources for mouse genetics and comparative genomics. We developed the multiple genome viewer (MGV; http://www.informatics.jax.org/mgv ) to support visualization, exploration, and comparison of genome annotations within and across these genomes. MGV displays chromosomal regions of user-selected genomes as horizontal tracks. Equivalent features across the genome tracks are highlighted using vertical 'swim lane' connectors. Navigation across the genomes is synchronized as a researcher uses the scroll and zoom …

Mammalian embryogenesis is characterized by rapid cellular proliferation and diversification. Within a few weeks, a single-cell zygote gives rise to millions of cells expressing a panoply of molecular programs. Although intensively studied, a comprehensive delineation of the major cellular trajectories that comprise mammalian development in vivo remains elusive. Here, we set out to integrate several single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) datasets that collectively span mouse gastrulation and organogenesis, supplemented with new profiling of ~150,000 nuclei from approximately embryonic day 8.5 (E8.5) embryos staged in one-somite increments. Overall, we define cell states at each of 19 successive stages spanning E3.5 to E13.5 and …

However, the versatility of this in vivo recombination system relies on having detailed and accurate characterization of recombinase expression and activity to enable selection of the appropriate allele or transgene. The CrePortal ( http://www.informatics.jax.org/home/recombinase ) leverages the informatics infrastructure of Mouse Genome Informatics to integrate data from the scientific literature, direct data submissions from the scientific community at-large, and from major projects developing new recombinase lines and characterizing recombinase expression and specificity patterns. Searching the CrePortal by recombinase activity or specific recombinase gene …

The Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI) database system combines multiple expertly curated community data resources into a shared knowledge management ecosystem united by common metadata annotation standards. MGI's mission is to facilitate the use of the mouse as an experimental model for understanding the genetic and genomic basis of human health and disease. MGI is the authoritative source for mouse gene, allele, and strain nomenclature and is the primary source of mouse phenotype annotations, functional annotations, developmental gene expression information, and annotations of mouse models with human diseases. MGI maintains mouse anatomy and phenotype ontologies and contributes to the development of …
