Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex Sp.) Seed Preferences And Distribution In A Suburban Setting, Lilly V. Elliott
Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex Sp.) Seed Preferences And Distribution In A Suburban Setting, Lilly V. Elliott
Theses and Dissertations
Harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex sp.) are omnivorous ants native to Texas and are the main food source for the threatened Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum). Little research has been conducted on harvester ants in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) and their interactions with their environment. For this purpose, a variety of experiments were conducted to better understand these interactions and preferences. In CHAPTER I, suburban harvester ants were exposed commonly used cover crop seeds in the LRGV and inoculated seeds via seed depots over the course of 24 hours. We found that harvester ants do …

Effects Of Tributyltin Exposure On 8-Ohdg And Dsdna Expressions, Oxidative And Nitrative Stress In The American Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica, Mohan Kumar Dash
Theses and Dissertations
Environmental pollution increases due to anthropogenic activities. Different types of pollutants and/or chemicals impair growth, reproduction and development in aquatic organisms. Tributyltin (TBT, an organotin compound) is a tremendously toxic substance which widely uses as antifouling paints used in boats, hulls, and ships. The toxic effect of TBT is well documented in teleost species. The American oyster (Crassostrea virginica) is an ideal shellfish species to study on TBT exposure DNA lesion and oxidative/nitrative stress. In this study, the effects of TBT on 8’-hyrodxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG, a molecular marker), dsDNA, dinitrophenyl protein …
Postprandial Hemodynamics In Hispanics With And Without A Family History Of Type 2 Diabetes, Gabriel Alejandro Figueroa
Postprandial Hemodynamics In Hispanics With And Without A Family History Of Type 2 Diabetes, Gabriel Alejandro Figueroa
Theses and Dissertations
Hispanics of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) have the highest rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the country, conditions often associated with cardiovascular disease and increased mortality. This study investigated the physiological factors affecting postprandial hemodynamic responses differently between FH+ and FH- groups. Thirty-one healthy Hispanic individuals volunteered in this study. Overall, FH+ individuals had higher pressures at rest compared to FH-, However, these differences were not statistically significant. When controlling for blood chemistries such as blood glucose, cholesterol, lipoproteins, and triglycerides, family history appears to have no effect on fasted or postprandial hemodynamics and pulse wave …

Nanostructured Materials For Biomedical Applications, Silverio Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
Nanotechnology has been used in an increasing number of applications in biochemistry and molecular biology. Compared to bulk materials, nanoscale materials offer a variety of advantages in applications due to an increased surface-to-volume ratio of the reactants. The unique properties of nanostructured materials and their properties such as stability, reactivity, magnetic response, pressure discharge performance and biocompatibility depend on particle size and shape. This work focuses on a nanoenergetic material composed of Aluminum (Al), Copper II oxide (CuO), and Iodine (I) pentoxide (I2O5), and the biomedical application of nanoscale dextran-coated magnetite (Fe3O4), which was produced using microfluidics to tune particle …
Exploring Dna Compaction Via Bacillus Subtilis Parb Protein By Single Molecule Investigation, Miranda L. Molina
Exploring Dna Compaction Via Bacillus Subtilis Parb Protein By Single Molecule Investigation, Miranda L. Molina
Theses and Dissertations
Faithful chromosome segregation involves ParB, a DNA-binding and compacting protein that specifically recognizes parS DNA sites near the replication origin. ParB spreads 10-20 kb from parS sites, which recruitments additional ParB molecules to neighboring DNA, forming higher-order nucleoprotein complexes. ParB is also a novel CTPase enzyme and hydrolyses CTP to self-dimerization and create a clamp that slides along DNA. To understand the roles of CTP in Bacillus subtilis ParB (BsParB), we purified wild type ParB (BsParB (WT)) and recombinant ParB (BsParB(R80A)) mutant. BsParB(R80A) was known to prevent CTP binding and not compact DNA. Proteins N- and C-terminally appended with a …
Structures And Regulations Of Translation Initiation Factors In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Protein Biosynthesis To Develop New Potential Antimicrobial Agents, Nicolette Valdez
Structures And Regulations Of Translation Initiation Factors In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Protein Biosynthesis To Develop New Potential Antimicrobial Agents, Nicolette Valdez
Theses and Dissertations
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative, multidrug resistant bacterium that has been recognized as the prominent cause of nosocomial infections. Untreated acute and chronic infections associated with P. aeruginosa can develop into other diseases such as pneumonia, otitis externa, and osteomyelitis. P. aeruginosa infections commonly affect immunocompromised individuals such as cystic fibrosis, cancer, and burn patients. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics has contributed to the increased antibiotic resistance in P. aeruginosa and thus has led to an unmet need for discovery of novel antibiotic candidates. Protein biosynthesis is an essential metabolic process occurring in all bacteria and a validated target …
Blood Lead Levels In Minority Children: A Case Of Environmental Racism, Erick Rivera
Blood Lead Levels In Minority Children: A Case Of Environmental Racism, Erick Rivera
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Racial minorities in the United States have suffered from being disadvantaged. Among these disadvantages is environmental racism. This includes minority communities being ‘sacrifice zones’ for toxic waste and being exposed to lead poisoning. The purpose of this study is to examine differences in blood levels between white children and children of color. This research will follow a bivariate model for the first research question, “Do youth of color (under the age of 18) have higher BLLs than white children?” The bivariate model will look at the relationship between ethno-racial group and BLLs. Specifically, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be …
Hyper Stable Variants Of Fgf-1-Fgf-2 Dimer, Madison Shields Mcclanahan
Hyper Stable Variants Of Fgf-1-Fgf-2 Dimer, Madison Shields Mcclanahan
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGFs), including FGF-1 and FGF-2, are proteins that play a crucial role in cell proliferation, cell differentiation, cell migration, and tissue repair. FGF-1 and FGF-2 are useful in accelerating the healing process in the human body; however, these proteins are naturally thermally unstable, resulting in a relatively low half-life in vivo. 1,8 In efforts to improve the stability of this protein, FGF-1 and FGF-2 proteins are engineered by combining the amino acid sequences of the two proteins to form a heterodimer and obtain novel properties. These two FGF variants are chosen for their specific wound healing capabilities. …
Characterization Of A Protein-Small Molecule Interaction Between Microtubules And Novel Ruthenium-Polypyridyl Complexes, Chloe Hutchison
Characterization Of A Protein-Small Molecule Interaction Between Microtubules And Novel Ruthenium-Polypyridyl Complexes, Chloe Hutchison
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Microtubules are cytoskeletal filaments that play a role in essential functions within the cell such as cell motility, intracellular transport, structural support and chromosome segregation. Tubulin is a heterodimeric protein that exhibits GTP dependent polymerization and self- assembles into polar microtubule filaments. Microtubules are dynamic polymers corresponding to their role in separation of duplicated chromosomes during mitosis. As the polymers cycle through rounds of polymerization and depolymerization based on their nucleotide state, the chromosomes are pulled towards the poles in the mitotic cell. Their normal function and dynamics can be disrupted in highly proliferative cells that interrupt cell cycle progression …
Studying The Lysine Acetylation Of Aconitase Isozymes In E. Coli, Sara Ottinger
Studying The Lysine Acetylation Of Aconitase Isozymes In E. Coli, Sara Ottinger
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
The contents of this thesis have been modified from the publication “Araujo J, Ottinger S, Venkat S, Gan Q and Fan C (2022) Studying Acetylation of Aconitase Isozymes by Genetic Code Expansion. Front. Chem. 10:862483”. Though studies have found multiple lysine sites in which acetylation takes place in Escherichia Coli aconitase, acetylation’s effects on the enzyme’s activity have yet to be studied. Aconitase is the dehydratase-hydratase found in the citric acid and glyoxylate cycles responsible for the reversible isomerization of citrate to isocitrate via cis-aconitate intermediate. There are two isoforms of aconitase in E. coli: AcnA and AcnB. In …
The Relationship Of Strength, Mobility, And Performance Variables On Throwing Speed In Baseball Catchers, Caleigh D. Hall
The Relationship Of Strength, Mobility, And Performance Variables On Throwing Speed In Baseball Catchers, Caleigh D. Hall
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Baseball is a popular sport worldwide and has thus garnered significant research focus, predominately of pitchers and hitters. However, research involving catchers is scant despite their major influence and consistent presence throughout a game. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of lower body strength and mobility and performance with throwing speed in baseball catchers. We hypothesized that strength and mobility would have a positive relationship with ball speed, peak power generated while rising out of the squat position would be positively related to ball speed, shorter ascent time would be inversely related to ball speed, …

Exploiting Chemogenetic And Genetic Interactions In Human Cells As An Avenue For New Therapeutic Opportunities, Medina Colic
Exploiting Chemogenetic And Genetic Interactions In Human Cells As An Avenue For New Therapeutic Opportunities, Medina Colic
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The advent of CRISPR technology and its adaptation to the mammalian genome made whole-genome knockout screens possible directly in human cells. Gene knockout answers how essential that gene is for cell fitness and proliferation. Genes showing moderate to severe fitness defects are called essential genes and provide insights into disease-specific candidate therapeutic targets. Additionally, CRISPR offers other applications for genome editing. Two applications this dissertation is based on are 1) combination of gene knockout and drug treatment, which enables the identification of chemogenetic interactions, or gene mutations that enhance or suppress the activity of a drug, and 2) combinatorial editing, …
Identification Of Sall4 Expressing Islet-1+ Cardiovascular Progenitor Cell Clones, Andrea Gabrielle Monteon
Identification Of Sall4 Expressing Islet-1+ Cardiovascular Progenitor Cell Clones, Andrea Gabrielle Monteon
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The utilization of cardiac progenitor cells (CPC) has been shown to induce favorable regenerative effects. While there are various populations of endogenous CPCs in the heart, there is no consensus regarding which population is the most ideal for cell-based regenerative therapy. Identifying an Islet-1+ (Isl-1+) early-stage progenitor population with enhanced stemness, multipotency and differentiation potential would be beneficial for regenerative therapy. Spalt-like transcription factor 4 (SALL4) plays a role in embryonic development as well as proliferation and expansion of hematopoietic progenitor cells. We hypothesize that SALL4 will be co-expressed in Isl-1+ cardiac progenitor cell clones isolated from human cardiac tissue …

It is a debilitating disease that has no well-established treatments, thus leaving an important area to study the pathophysiology of the disease so that new clinically translatable treatments can be found. In the development of translational treatments in experimental ICH, several challenges exist including the designing of studies, method to deliver drugs, proper dosages, and development of models. In our exploration to establish new therapies for ICH, we studied several methods and models that may help to develop …
Climate-Driven Stock Shifts And Expansions In The U.S. Northeast Shelf: Identifying Challenges, Opportunities, And Barriers Through Fishermen And Manager Perspectives, Sophie A. Swetz
All Theses And Dissertations
Climate-driven warming in the U.S. Northeast Shelf (NES) has led to changes in the spatial distributions of many marine resources. Shifts and expansions of commercially important fish stocks pose major challenges to fishermen and fisheries managers in this region. American lobster (Homarus americanus) in the Gulf of Maine (GOM) is one of these impacted stocks and is projected to continue its shift towards more northern and offshore areas. Continued ocean warming could potentially reduce the GOM lobster stock by up to 60% over the next several decades. Given Maine’s reliance on its lobster fishery—which contributes over 80% of …

Potential carbon mineralization (Cmin) is a commonly used indicator of soil health, with greater Cmin values interpreted as healthier soil. While Cmin values are typically greater in agricultural soils managed with minimal physical disturbance, the mechanisms driving the increases remain poorly understood. This study assessed bacterial and archaeal community structure and potential microbial drivers of Cmin in soils maintained under various degrees of physical disturbance. Potential carbon mineralization, 16S rRNA sequences, and soil characterization data were collected as part of the North American Project to Evaluate Soil Health Measurements (NAPESHM). Results showed that type of cropping system, intensity of physical …
Roles Of Small Rnas And Paralogous Proteins In Bacillus Anthracis Virulence Gene Regulation, Ileana Corsi
Roles Of Small Rnas And Paralogous Proteins In Bacillus Anthracis Virulence Gene Regulation, Ileana Corsi
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Bacteria have evolved a myriad of regulatory mechanisms to control gene expression. One of the most common mechanisms is post-transcriptional control through the function of small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs). Small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) are short transcripts that base-pair to mRNA targets or interact with regulatory proteins. sRNA function has been studied extensively in Gram-negative bacteria; comparatively less is known about sRNAs in Firmicutes. In this dissertation, I investigated two sRNAs encoded within the virulence plasmid pXO1 of Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax. The sRNAs, named “XrrA and XrrB” (for pXO1-encoded regulatory RNA) are abundant and highly stable …

One in 8 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Currently, doxorubicin is one of the most effective chemotherapies for breast cancer. Unfortunately, up to 60% of survivors report long-term chemotherapy-induced cognitive dysfunction (CICD) characterized by deficits in working memory, processing speed, and executive functioning. Currently, no interventions for CICD have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. I show here that a 14-day treatment with a blood-brain barrier permeable histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) inhibitor successfully reverses long-term CICD following a therapeutic doxorubicin dosing schedule in female mice, as assessed by the puzzle box test …
